For behavioral tests, click the site’s Accept, Reject, or Preferences control and wait for the banner to disappear. For repeatable runs, initialize the consent cookie or storage value that the site actually writes, after navigating to that domain. For a visual-only image, hide or remove the rendered banner with inspected CSS or JavaScript, then verify that no backdrop or scroll lock remains.
There is no universal cookie name or selector. Consent systems differ by site, region, and vendor, so inspect the target rather than copying a guessed value.
Choose the method that matches your test

Keep at least one test that performs the genuine interaction if your suite also verifies consent behavior. A DOM shortcut should not replace that coverage.
Method 1: click the site’s consent choice
This is the most representative approach. Selenium drives the same control a visitor would use, allowing the consent manager to set cookies, local storage, analytics state, and any page flags it normally requires.

If the control is inside an iframe, switch into that frame before locating it and switch back afterward. If the banner appears after an asynchronous script, wait for it explicitly rather than adding an arbitrary sleep.
When a click is the right assertion
- Use Accept when your test models the site’s default visitor path.
- Use Reject or a configured Preferences choice when privacy behavior is what you are testing.
- After the click, assert both that the banner is absent and that the page is usable: the main content is visible, scrolling is enabled, and no full-screen backdrop intercepts clicks.
Method 2: initialize the site’s real consent state
Selenium can add, read, delete, and clear cookies in the current browsing context. The browser must already be on the domain for which a cookie is valid before you call add_cookie; the official Selenium documentation recommends loading a small page on that site first if the home page is slow.
Discover the value instead of guessing
- Start a clean browser profile and open the target site.
- Accept, reject, or save preferences through the real UI.
- In Chrome, open DevTools and choose Application > Storage > Cookies. Chrome’s guide also shows how to inspect third-party cookies and edit or delete entries: Chrome DevTools cookie documentation.
- Record the exact cookie name, value, domain, path, expiry, and secure flags, or identify the corresponding local-storage key. Repeat the observation after changing the preference to ensure you found the controlling state.
Consent may be represented by local storage, session storage, an iframe vendor, or a server-side account setting rather than one first-party cookie. The site-specific nature of these values is also noted by Selenium Decoded’s recipes.

Method 3: hide or remove the rendered banner
Use this only when the screenshot is a presentation artifact and consent behavior is tested elsewhere. Inject CSS after the banner renders:

Consent managers commonly add a separate backdrop, set body { overflow: hidden; }, trap keyboard focus, or render a shadow-DOM component. Search for the overlay in the Elements panel, restore scrolling if necessary, and confirm that the underlying content has not been obscured. A visual shortcut must not claim that consent was granted.
A repeatable Selenium screenshot workflow
- Create a fresh browser session for every independent case so an earlier test cannot leak consent state.
- Open the target origin (or a lightweight same-domain page) before adding cookies or storage.
- Choose click, state initialization, or visual hiding according to the test intent.
- Wait for a condition: the banner is invisible or absent, the overlay is gone, and the main content is present. Use Selenium’s explicit waits rather than fixed delays.
- Set the viewport and device scale before capture. Keep these values constant when comparing screenshots.
- Capture with
save_screenshotor the Selenium screenshot API, then close the driver in afinallyblock.

Troubleshooting common failures
The cookie is rejected with an invalid-argument error
Usually the browser is on the wrong host, or the cookie’s domain, path, or value is malformed. Navigate to the exact site first, remove a leading dot or mismatched domain when appropriate, and copy the observed attributes from DevTools.

The banner returns on every run
The site may use local storage, a third-party consent iframe, a rotating value, region-specific logic, or a server-side account flag. Perform one real choice, inspect all storage areas and network calls, and reproduce the complete state rather than only one guessed cookie.

The click times out
The banner may be delayed, inside an iframe, covered by another overlay, or absent for the current geography. Wait for its container, switch to the correct frame, scroll the control into view, and treat an absent banner as a separate expected branch instead of silently masking every timeout.
The screenshot still contains a gray veil
Hide or remove the backdrop as well as the dialog. Check fixed-position elements, shadow roots, and injected styles, then verify that scrolling and pointer events work.
The page is blank after consent
Do not capture immediately after clicking. Wait for the main content or a network-idle condition used by your framework. A consent action can trigger a reload or lazy rendering.
Tests pass locally but fail in CI
Pin the browser and driver versions used by the runner, set an explicit viewport, use a clean profile, and avoid relying on locale-dependent button text. Record page source and a diagnostic screenshot when a wait fails.

Should production tests click Accept or set a cookie?
Use a real click for consent-behavior coverage. Set the observed state only for tests whose purpose is page rendering or screenshot repeatability.
Does deleting the banner prove consent was granted?
No. DOM removal changes presentation only. It does not establish the site’s legal or functional consent state.
