To remove a Google Sheets comment, open its discussion card, select More (three dots), then choose Delete. To remove a cell note, right-click its cell and select Delete notes. These are different features: resolving a comment closes the discussion but does not delete it.

First, tell comments and notes apart

A comment is a discussion attached to a cell. It can include replies and can be resolved and reopened. A note is text attached to a cell, without a discussion thread. The removal steps depend on which one you want to clear.

Delete a comment

  1. Open the comment by selecting its cell or the comment indicator.
  2. On the comment card, click More (three dots).
  3. Select Delete and confirm if prompted.

Google documents this menu path for deleting comments. The documented interface route is one comment at a time; Google’s help instructions reviewed here do not establish a built-in bulk-delete-comments command.

Resolve a comment without deleting it

If you want to close a discussion but keep it available, open the comment and click Resolve. The comment is closed, not deleted; you can still access it from the Comments panel and reopen it. Google Help says, “To see a comment that you closed, click Comments at the top corner of the window.”

Delete a cell note

  1. Right-click the cell that contains the note.
  2. Choose Delete notes.

This menu instruction comes from a Google support community answer by a volunteer product expert, rather than an official Google Help page. For Apps Script automation, Google’s official documentation says setting a cell’s notes property to null removes its note.

Find a comment you want to remove

Click Show all comments to open the Comments panel. You can search comments by keyword or username, filter by open or resolved status, and—in Sheets—filter by sheet. The active sheet tab can also indicate comment locations; selecting an indication takes you to the relevant cell.

When deletion is unavailable

For developers using the Sheets API, deleting a whole comment thread is restricted to the author of the thread’s head post. A user can delete only their own replies, and a reply containing a comment action or assignee email cannot be deleted through the reply-delete request. These API restrictions are distinct from the regular Sheets interface.

Keyboard shortcuts

Google’s computer shortcut reference lists Shift + F2 for inserting or editing a note and E for resolving the selected comment. It does not list a dedicated shortcut for deleting a comment. Google cautions that some shortcuts may not work with every language or keyboard.
