In Windows 11, “home screen” usually means the desktop. Removing an app icon from the desktop removes only its shortcut; it does not uninstall the app. You can also remove an app from the taskbar or hide it from the Start menu, using different steps.
Remove an app icon from the Windows 11 desktop
- Find the app icon on the desktop.
- Right-click the icon.
- Choose Delete. If Windows asks for confirmation, select Yes.
The shortcut normally moves to the Recycle Bin. The installed app remains on your PC and should still be available from Start or Windows Search.
You can also select the icon and press Delete on your keyboard. To remove it without sending it to the Recycle Bin, select the icon and press Shift + Delete, then confirm. Use that shortcut carefully because the item cannot normally be restored from the Recycle Bin.
Remove several desktop app icons at once
- Hold Ctrl and click each desktop icon you want to remove.
- Right-click one of the selected icons.
- Click Delete.
Alternatively, drag around the icons with the mouse to select a group, then press Delete. Be careful not to select files or folders that you want to keep.

Remove an app from the taskbar
If the app icon is pinned along the bottom of the screen, removing it from the taskbar is separate from deleting its desktop shortcut.
- Right-click the app icon on the taskbar.
- Choose Unpin from taskbar.
This removes the pinned icon but leaves the app installed. If the app is currently open, close its window first if you want the running-app icon to disappear immediately.
Remove an app shortcut from the Start menu
Windows 11 does not use a traditional desktop-style “remove” command for every Start menu entry. To remove a pinned shortcut:
- Click Start, or press the Windows key.
- Find the app under Pinned.
- Right-click it.
- Select Unpin from Start.
Unpin from Start removes only the Start menu shortcut. It does not uninstall the application.

If the app is listed under Recommended, right-click it and choose Remove from list. This removes the recommendation, not the app itself.
Remove the app completely from Windows 11
Use this method when you want to uninstall the program rather than merely remove an icon.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Click Apps.
- Click Installed apps.
- Search for the app, or scroll through the list.
- Click the app’s More options button, shown as ⋯.
- Choose Uninstall, then follow the program’s removal wizard.
You can also uninstall many applications from Start: click Start, right-click the app, choose Uninstall, and confirm. Windows may open Settings > Apps > Installed apps to finish the process.

If Delete is missing or does not work
The icon is not actually an app shortcut
Some desktop icons are Windows system items, such as This PC, Recycle Bin, Control Panel, or Network. To remove these:

- Open Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Themes.
- Click Desktop icon settings.
- Clear the checkbox for the icon you do not want.
- Click Apply, then OK.
For a normal shortcut, right-clicking it should show Delete. If it does not, you may be looking at a file, folder, or item controlled by another account or program.
The desktop icons are hidden
If you cannot see any icons, right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose View. Make sure Show desktop icons is checked. This setting displays or hides all desktop icons; it does not delete them.
The icon keeps coming back
Some installers create a desktop shortcut again after an update or repair. Delete the shortcut after the update has finished. If it repeatedly returns, check the app’s own settings for an option such as Create desktop shortcut, or uninstall the app if you no longer need it.

Windows says the file is in use
Close the application and any related windows, then try again. If the shortcut still cannot be deleted, restart Windows and delete it before reopening the program. A shortcut is usually not locked by the app itself, but an installer or management tool may temporarily have it open.

Hide every desktop icon without deleting shortcuts
To clear the desktop view while keeping the shortcuts available:
- Right-click an empty part of the desktop.
- Point to View.
- Click Show desktop icons to clear the check mark.
Repeat the same steps to show the icons again. This changes only their visibility.

If you deleted the shortcut normally, open the Recycle Bin, right-click the shortcut, and select Restore. Windows returns it to its previous desktop location when possible.

- Open Start and click All.
- Find the app.
- Drag the app from the Start menu to the desktop. If dragging is not available, right-click the app and choose Open file location, then right-click the app shortcut in File Explorer and choose Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
The exact Start menu option can vary for Microsoft Store apps and apps installed for all users. You can also create a shortcut by locating the program’s executable file in File Explorer, right-clicking it, and choosing Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).

Does deleting an app icon from the Windows 11 desktop uninstall the app?
No. Deleting a desktop shortcut removes the shortcut, not the installed program. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > More options > Uninstall to remove the app.
How do I remove an app from the Windows 11 home screen but keep it installed?
