First check whether alerts are actually website notifications: an alert by itself does not prove that your Mac is infected.
First, decide whether the alert is adware or a website notification
Persistent pop-ups can indicate adware or other unwanted software, but they are not proof of an infection. Apple also explains that websites can request permission to send notifications, which may appear in Notification Centre or on the Lock Screen. If an alert identifies a website as its source, investigate that site’s notification permission rather than assuming an installed Mac app is responsible. Apple Support’s Safari pop-up guidance explains both possibilities.
This guide covers macOS and Safari. Menu paths and settings differ in other browsers, so do not apply Safari instructions to Chrome, Firefox, or another browser.
Remove suspected adware in this order

Close the pop-up without engaging with it
Do not click links or buttons in a suspicious ad, enter personal or financial information, or install a download it recommends. Some pop-ups impersonate trusted companies or promote fake updates and security fixes. Close the tab or window using the browser’s own controls; if that is not possible, quit Safari and reopen it without restoring the suspicious page.

Update macOS, or restart if it is already current
Install the latest macOS version available for your Mac. If macOS is already current, restart the computer. Apple says macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware when the Mac restarts. This is a useful first step, not a guarantee that every adware problem will be found or removed.

Look for apps you did not intend to install
Open the Applications folder and review the apps there. If you find an app you do not recognize or remember choosing, verify what it is before removing it; then delete it or use its included uninstaller if available. Do not delete unfamiliar system files or make broad removals from Library folders.

Review Safari extensions
In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Extensions. Turn off extensions you do not need, and uninstall ones you did not choose or no longer trust. If the problem stops after disabling an extension, remove it rather than re-enabling it.

Check site notification permissions when alerts continue
If the alert appears in Notification Centre or on the Lock Screen and names a website, it may be a notification from a site that was previously allowed to send alerts. Review Safari’s website notification permissions and revoke permission for sites you do not trust. The Apple guidance linked above explains why these alerts can appear, but does not specify the current click-by-click path for revoking permission; check the notification and Safari settings on your macOS version rather than relying on an outdated path.

Consider a scan if the problem persists
If unwanted ads or redirects continue after the built-in checks, an on-demand security scan is an optional next step. Malwarebytes’ Mac installation instructions and its Mac scanning guide describe its app, scanning, and quarantine features. These materials do not establish that any scanner detects every threat, so treat scan results as one part of troubleshooting rather than a universal guarantee.
If the ads still appear
If the problem remains after these steps, seek help from Apple or a trusted technician rather than installing a cleaner promoted by a pop-up or deleting system files at random. Note whether the ads appear only in Safari, whether they name a website, and whether they continue after a restart; those details can help support distinguish a site notification, browser extension, and unwanted app.

Reduce the chance of installing unwanted software
- Prefer apps from the App Store or directly from a developer you trust. Apple calls the App Store the safest way to download apps.
- Do not treat an unexpected alert as a reason to install an update or security tool. Open the relevant app or Apple’s settings directly instead of using the alert’s link.
- When a website asks to send notifications, allow them only if you want alerts from that site.
