To remove a person from a photo with Clean Up in iOS 18.1, open the image in Photos, tap Edit, then Clean Up. Tap, brush over, or circle the person or area, and tap Done. Clean Up requires a supported iPhone, and Apple warns that brushing over a person’s face may leave it blurred and pixelated.
Remove a person using Clean Up in Photos
-
Open Photos and select the image you want to edit.
-
Tap Edit, then tap Clean Up. The feature may take a moment to become available while the image is prepared.

Check the finished image, especially where the person overlapped another person, a face, or a detailed background. Clean Up attempts to fill the selected area, but Apple does not promise a seamless result for every photo. Its guide cautions: “If you brush over a person’s face, the face may become blurred with a pixelated effect.” Apple’s Clean Up instructions explain the selection controls and this limitation.

Apple lists iOS 18.1 as the minimum software version for these devices. Having that version alone does not guarantee availability everywhere: language and regional restrictions apply. Apple says Apple Intelligence became available to residents of the European Union on supported iPhone models with iOS 18.4 or later. Clean Up does not currently work on devices purchased in mainland China; Apple also specifies location and Apple Account region conditions for supported devices purchased elsewhere. Check Apple’s Apple Intelligence requirements for the current conditions that apply to your device and region.
