Use cbar.remove() to remove a whole colorbar. To hide labels but keep tick marks, use ax.tick_params(); to remove selected tick locations, set the locations and matching labels explicitly. These operations affect different parts of a plot.
Remove the whole colorbar
A Matplotlib colorbar is drawn in its own axes and represents the mapping between scalar values and colors. Keep the Colorbar object returned by fig.colorbar() or plt.colorbar(), then call its remove() method:
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
image = ax.imshow(data)
cbar = fig.colorbar(image, ax=ax)
# Remove the colorbar later
cbar.remove()This removes the colorbar from the figure, rather than merely hiding its labels. If the colorbar was created with use_gridspec=True, Matplotlib restores the previous gridspec when removing it. See the Matplotlib 3.10.0 colorbar API.
Hide selected colorbar labels while keeping their ticks
Set the tick positions and corresponding labels together. Use an empty string for a location whose tick should remain but whose text should be blank:

cbar.set_ticks([0, 1, 2, 3], labels=["0", "", "2", "3"])Each label corresponds to the tick at the same position. The colorbar API discourages using set_ticklabels() alone in most cases because labels can become mismatched if tick positions change. If you need specific labels, bind them to fixed positions with set_ticks(positions, labels=labels).
Hide ordinary axis labels but retain tick marks
For an x- or y-axis, tick_params() can hide labels without deleting tick positions or tick marks:

ax.tick_params(axis="x", labelbottom=False)
ax.tick_params(axis="y", labelleft=False)These options affect the bottom x-axis labels and left y-axis labels. The Axes.tick_params reference also provides separate controls for tick marks on each side, so label visibility and tick-mark visibility can be changed independently. Properties you do not specify remain unchanged unless reset=True.
Remove particular ordinary axis ticks and labels
To keep only particular x-axis locations, provide those locations and their matching labels. Use set_yticks() for the y-axis:

ax.set_xticks([0, 2, 5], labels=["start", "middle", "end"])This replaces the axis locator with a fixed locator. Matplotlib may expand the view limits so all supplied ticks are visible; if you need specific limits, set them after the ticks:
ax.set_xticks([0, 2, 5], labels=["start", "middle", "end"])
ax.set_xlim(0, 5)To remove every x-axis tick, use ax.set_xticks([]). The same principle applies to ax.set_yticks([]). See the Axes.set_xticks reference.

Choose the method by what you want removed
- Entire colorbar: call
cbar.remove()on the returned colorbar object. - Only some colorbar text: use
cbar.set_ticks()with an empty string for labels to hide. - Axis labels, but not tick marks: use
ax.tick_params()with the relevant label option set toFalse. - Specific ordinary-axis tick locations: use
set_xticks()orset_yticks()with only the locations to retain.
The colorbar examples here follow the versioned Matplotlib 3.10.0 API; the regular-axis references are the stable documentation built from Matplotlib 3.11.2 source. If your installed version behaves differently, consult documentation for that version.
