There isn’t one universal “remove device” switch for Outlook.com. The right steps depend on whether you want to sign out of a browser, remove an account from the Outlook app, unlink a device from your personal Microsoft account, or remove a mailbox sync partnership. Choose the case that matches what you want to stop; removing a sync partnership does not erase a phone.
Choose the right removal method
| What you want to stop | Where to do it | What the action does |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook.com open in a browser | Outlook.com account menu | Signs out of that browser session. |
| An email account configured in Outlook for Windows | Outlook account settings | Removes the account from the app, not the underlying email account. |
| A device shown on your personal Microsoft account | Microsoft account Devices page | Removes a PC listing or unlinks a mobile device from the account. |
| A sync partnership with an on-premises Exchange Server mailbox | Outlook on the web, Mobile devices settings | Removes the partnership and device from the mailbox; it does not wipe the device. |
| A Microsoft 365 work or school device | Organizational My Account Devices page or your administrator | Lets you review or disable a device; mailbox removal or wiping may require an administrator. |
These controls affect different relationships. For example, signing out of a browser is not the same as removing an account from an app, and neither is the same as erasing data from a lost phone.
Sign out of Outlook.com in a browser
- Open Outlook.com and select your account initials or profile picture at the top of the inbox.
- Select Sign out.
If the sign-out option is unavailable, Microsoft advises closing all browser windows as a manual sign-out step. This signs out of Outlook.com in the browser; it does not remove the email account from an Outlook app or unlink a device from your Microsoft account. See Microsoft’s sign-out instructions.
Remove an email account from Outlook for Windows
New Outlook for Windows
- Open View settings or Account info.
- Go to Accounts > Your accounts.
- Find the account, select Manage, then choose Remove.
This removes the account from Outlook for Windows; it does not delete the email account with its provider. For some non-Microsoft accounts, the removal dialog offers a choice to remove the account from one device or all devices. Microsoft warns that removing it from all devices can affect Microsoft Cloud data, and calendar or other items stored only there might not be recoverable.

Classic Outlook for Windows
- Open File > Account Settings > Account Settings.

Microsoft documents these routes in its Outlook for Windows account guidance.
Remove or unlink a device from your personal Microsoft account
Remove a PC
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com/devices.
- Find the PC and select Remove device.
- Check the confirmation box and select Remove.
Unlink a mobile device
- Open account.microsoft.com/devices/android-ios.
- Find the mobile device and select Unlink.
These are device-list actions on a personal Microsoft account. They should not be treated as a remote-wipe command or as a universal way to remove a mailbox sync partnership. Microsoft’s device management guidance explains the account-device controls.

Remove an Exchange Server mobile sync partnership
If your mailbox is on an on-premises Exchange Server, use Outlook on the web to remove its mobile sync partnership:
- Open Settings > Options, or Mail > General > Mobile devices, depending on the interface.
- Select the device, then choose Remove.
Microsoft says this removes the sync partnership and deletes the device from the mailbox, but “doesn’t remotely wipe your device.” The same page describes a separate Wipe all data action for supported Exchange Server configurations. Do not choose Remove expecting it to erase a phone. These instructions are specifically for the on-premises Exchange Server mailbox flow, not a universal Outlook.com consumer setting. See Microsoft’s Mobile devices options in Outlook on the web.

For a Microsoft 365 work or school account
Microsoft removed the Mobile devices settings page in late 2025 from Outlook on the web and new Outlook for Windows for Microsoft 365 work or school accounts. To review or disable a connected device, use the Devices page in your organization’s My Account portal. If you need to remove or wipe a device from the mailbox, contact your organization’s administrator; they may use Microsoft Intune or Exchange Online according to organizational policy.
If the phone is lost and you want to erase it, Microsoft points users to Apple’s or Google’s built-in device tools. Disabling a work device in the organizational portal is not the same as remotely erasing its local data. Details are in Microsoft’s work and school account guidance.

If Outlook is still syncing—or has stopped syncing
First confirm which account and device relationship you changed: browser session, Outlook app account, personal Microsoft account device listing, or Exchange mailbox partnership. A change in one place does not necessarily change the others.
There is also a separate compatibility issue for Outlook.com: Microsoft’s setup guidance says devices running ActiveSync versions lower than 16.1 will no longer connect to its services starting March 1, 2026. That cutoff can explain a connection failure on affected devices; it is not a device-removal step. See Microsoft’s Outlook.com account setup guidance.
