To uninstall an ordinary Android app that has device administrator access, first turn off that access in Settings, then uninstall the app from its app-info page. If the app is Android Device Policy, identify whether it belongs to a work profile or a company-managed phone: removing a work profile is a different process and deletes its local work apps and data. If your organization controls the phone or blocks removal, contact its IT administrator.
First identify what is managing the device
“Device administrator app” can mean an app granted a local Android administrator privilege, or Android Device Policy managing a work profile or an organization-owned device. These are different situations, with different removal steps.
- Ordinary app with administrator access: A consumer app may have been granted administrator access. Turn off that access before trying to uninstall the app.
- Android Device Policy and a work profile: Work apps often have a briefcase marker. Android Device Policy enforces an organization’s security rules for that work environment. Google explains where to find the app and how management differs by setup in About Android Device Policy.
- Company-owned or fully managed phone: Management can apply across the device, not just to work apps. Google distinguishes this from work-profile management in What is Android Device Policy?.
Check who owns or manages the phone before deleting anything. A work profile is not simply another app’s device-admin permission.
Remove an ordinary app’s device administrator access
- Open the device-admin controls: Open Settings and search for “device admin apps” or “device administrator.” Open the matching security or device-administration setting. Android menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and software version; there is no single path that applies to every phone.
- Deactivate the app: Select the app and choose the option to turn off or deactivate its administrator access. The label varies by device. If the option is unavailable or the phone says removal is restricted by policy, the app may be controlled by an organization; see the organization-managed section below.
- Uninstall the app: Open Settings > Apps, select the app, and tap Uninstall. Use your phone’s equivalent app-settings path if its menus differ.

Remove Android Device Policy from a personal phone with a work profile
If Android Device Policy is managing a work profile on your personal phone, remove the work profile rather than trying to disable the policy app as if it were an ordinary app. Removing the profile deletes its locally stored work apps and data. Save anything you need and confirm you can still access essential work information before proceeding. Removing local data from the phone does not, by itself, show that the organization’s server-side copies have been deleted.
- Find the work-profile controls: On some devices, open Settings > Passwords, Passkeys & Accounts. On Pixel devices running Android 8.0 or later, Google documents the route as Settings > Passwords, Passkeys & Accounts > Remove work profile. Other devices may use different names or locations; see Remove a work account from an Android device.
- Remove the work profile: Follow the on-screen prompts to remove it. Google says a work profile can be deleted only when you own the device or the organization relinquishes ownership. The apps and data stored locally in the profile are removed; see Android Enterprise’s explanation of What is an Android Work Profile?.
- Check whether the policy app remains: Google Workspace also documents Settings > Google > Work > Device Policy as a way to access the policy app. If it remains after profile removal, check Settings > Apps for an uninstall option. What can be removed depends on the enrollment and the organization’s policies; see About Android Device Policy.
What to do on a company-managed phone or when uninstall is blocked
On a company-owned, fully managed, or work-only device, the organization may control app removal and other settings across the device. Google says some company-owned or work-only devices require an administrator to reset the device or permit the user to reset it. Contact your organization’s IT administrator and ask them to release or unenroll the phone, or explain the approved removal process. Do not try to bypass employer or school controls.

If the app seems unfamiliar or harmful
Do not install a third-party “admin remover” utility. Use Google Play Protect to check for harmful apps: Google says it checks apps and devices, can warn about potentially harmful apps, and may deactivate or remove them. Follow the warning or scan flow shown on your device; see Use Google Play Protect to help keep your apps safe and your data private.
