Use replace() to remove the first matching text, replaceAll() to remove every literal match, or slice() to remove a character at a specific index. These are standard JavaScript string methods available on TypeScript string values; each returns a new string rather than changing the original.
Remove the first occurrence of a character
Call replace() with the text to find and an empty string. When the search pattern is a string, only its first occurrence is replaced, as documented by MDN’s String.prototype.replace() reference.

const result: string = text.replace("-", "");
console.log(result); // "ab-c"
console.log(text); // "a-b-c"Keep the returned value, or assign it back to a variable if you want to use the cleaned string in place of the original variable:

Use replaceAll() when every matching occurrence should go. A string search value is treated literally, so punctuation such as a period does not need regular-expression escaping. MDN documents this behavior in its String.prototype.replaceAll() reference.

console.log(result); // "abc"The search value can be more than one character; for example, text.replaceAll("--", "") removes each literal double hyphen. If the target comes from a variable and is intended as literal text, passing it as a string avoids interpreting regular-expression metacharacters.
Remove characters that match a rule
Use a regular expression when the target is a class or pattern rather than one exact string. Add the g flag to remove all matches; without it, replace() removes only the first match.

console.log(lettersOnly); // "TypeScript "You can also pass a regular expression to replaceAll(), but it must have the global flag. For example, text.replaceAll(/-/g, "") is valid, while text.replaceAll(/-/, "") throws a TypeError. See MDN’s replaceAll() documentation.
If a dynamic target must be treated as a regex, escape it before building the regular expression. For a literal target, using the string form of replaceAll() is simpler and safer.

Remove a character at a specific index
To remove the UTF-16 code unit at index index, join the part before it to the part after it:
function removeAt(input: string, index: number): string {
return input.slice(0, index) + input.slice(index + 1);
}
console.log(removeAt("TypeScript", 4)); // "TypeSript"JavaScript string indices count UTF-16 code units, not necessarily the visual characters a person sees. This operation is appropriate when the index is defined in those units and points to the intended one-unit character. For an emoji or another symbol represented by a surrogate pair, removing one code unit can leave an invalid fragment; a composed accent may also contain multiple code units.

Which method should you use?

Common mistakes and edge cases
Expecting replace() to remove every match
"a-b-c".replace("-", "") returns "ab-c", not "abc". Use replaceAll() for all literal matches or a global regular expression when matching a pattern.
Passing a regex to replaceAll() without g
A regular expression supplied to replaceAll() must be global. Add g, or pass a string when the search target is literal.

Using an empty search string accidentally
replaceAll("", replacement) inserts the replacement between UTF-16 code units and at the string boundaries. Validate a variable search term if an empty value would be a caller error. This edge case is described in MDN’s replaceAll() reference.
Treating a visual character as one index position
For user-perceived characters, do not assume that slice(i, i + 1) or split("") identifies one complete character. MDN notes that splitting a string with an empty separator operates on UTF-16 code units and can break surrogate pairs in its String.prototype.split() reference. Use a grapheme-segmentation approach when editing by visual character rather than by code unit.
TypeScript notes
There is no TypeScript-specific removal method: TypeScript’s string type uses the standard JavaScript string API. A helper can make the intent explicit, though its parameter type alone does not restrict character to exactly one Unicode code point:

return input.replaceAll(character, "");

const cleaned: string = removeAll("x-x-x", "x"); // "--"If the requirement is exactly one Unicode code point, validate that separately. If it is one displayed grapheme, code-point validation is not sufficient because some displayed characters comprise multiple code points.
