To remove a block in the WordPress Block Editor, select it, open the three-dot More options menu in its toolbar, and choose Delete. If the block is difficult to select on the canvas, use List View to find it in the document structure first.

Delete a block from the editor toolbar

  1. Click the block you want to remove in your post, page, or site-editing canvas.
  2. In the block toolbar, click the three-dot More options button.
  3. Select Delete.

Deletion applies to the block that is currently selected. If the toolbar belongs to a parent, group, column, or other container, check the block name before choosing Delete. WordPress documents this procedure in Work with blocks.

Use List View when you cannot select the block

List View shows the document’s blocks as a structured outline, making nested layouts and tightly packed content easier to target.

  1. Open Document Overview (the List View control) in the editor toolbar.
  2. Click the name of the block you want to remove.
  3. Use that block’s options and choose Delete.

In List View, hold Shift while clicking block names to select multiple blocks. You can then remove the selected blocks together. See WordPress’s List view guide for the selection behavior.

Common selection problems

  • The wrong item is selected: Check the block name in the toolbar or List View before deleting.
  • A container disappears instead of its content: You selected a parent group, column, row, or other layout block; undo, then select the inner block.
  • You cannot reach the block on the canvas: Open List View and select it from the outline.
  • A shortcut does nothing: Confirm the platform-specific combination in the editor’s shortcut list, or use the toolbar’s Delete command.

These controls are part of the WordPress Block Editor, not the Classic Editor. For broader interface orientation, see the official WordPress Block Editor documentation.
