Windows will try to install the driver again. If it does not, scan for hardware changes and install the driver provided for your exact PC model. First check that the problem is not simply a Bluetooth setting or a peripheral that is not ready to pair.
Check whether the driver is the problem
If Bluetooth is available but a headphone, keyboard, mouse, or other device will not connect, check the peripheral and its connection before changing the PC’s driver. Microsoft recommends confirming Bluetooth is on, the device is nearby and in pairing mode, and its battery is charged. If the device is already listed in Windows but will not connect, remove it from Windows and pair it again. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth connection troubleshooting steps.
A missing or grayed-out Bluetooth control is a different clue: Windows may not be detecting or enabling the PC’s Bluetooth hardware. Driver or firmware issues can be involved, so check the PC maker’s model-specific guidance if the steps below do not restore Bluetooth. Microsoft’s guidance for missing Bluetooth controls also points to checking for manufacturer firmware updates.
Uninstall the Bluetooth adapter and restart
- Open Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the PC’s Bluetooth adapter and select Uninstall device. The adapter name may contain “Bluetooth” or “Radio.” Select the adapter, not a paired peripheral such as headphones or a mouse.
- Restart the PC. Microsoft says Windows will try to reinstall the Bluetooth driver after restart. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth driver instructions.
If Windows does not reinstall the driver
Scan for the adapter
Open Device Manager and select Action > Scan for hardware changes. This asks Windows to look again for connected hardware. The exact menus can vary by Windows build.

Install the PC maker’s model-specific driver
If the adapter or Bluetooth function still does not return, go to the PC manufacturer’s support site and search using the computer’s model number. Download the Bluetooth driver intended for that model and Windows version, then follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Use a driver for the PC’s Bluetooth adapter rather than software for the peripheral you are trying to connect.
If the manufacturer’s download is an executable installer, run it and follow its prompts. If it contains driver files such as .inf and .sys, open Device Manager, right-click the Bluetooth adapter, choose Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers, select the folder containing the files, and continue through the prompts. Check Windows Update and firmware guidance
Windows Update may offer driver updates, but availability is not guaranteed. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; after that date, Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth driver page and its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.
If Bluetooth controls remain missing or grayed out, check the PC maker’s guidance for your exact model, including whether it offers an optional firmware or BIOS update. Firmware updates are manufacturer-specific; treat this as a later check, not the first step in reinstalling a driver.

When a driver reinstall is not enough
If Device Manager has no Bluetooth category, or the PC may not include Bluetooth hardware, check the PC’s specifications and manufacturer support information before repeating driver steps. A USB Bluetooth adapter may be an option if the computer lacks functioning Bluetooth, but it is not a routine part of reinstalling a working built-in adapter. Microsoft does not endorse a particular adapter in the troubleshooting guidance.
