To refresh a Facebook link-preview image, first deploy corrected, server-rendered Open Graph tags and a publicly reachable image. Then open Facebook’s Sharing Debugger, enter the exact page URL, and click Scrape Again. If Facebook still shows the previous picture, publish the same pixels at a new image URL (such as a versioned filename or ?v=2), update og:image, and scrape the page again.
This process refreshes what Facebook fetches for the URL. An attachment that was already published in a post is a separate object, so verify the debugger preview and the live post independently.
Why Facebook keeps showing the old image
Facebook’s crawler reads the Open Graph metadata returned with your page and downloads the image named by og:image. Replacing the file contents while keeping exactly the same image URL can leave the previous asset associated with that URL. A page can also continue to expose an old tag, expose several conflicting tags, or generate the tags only after JavaScript runs. Those conditions make a refresh appear to fail even when the image on your server looks correct in a browser.
Use the debugger to see the URL Facebook fetched, the response details, the tags it extracted, warnings, and the resulting preview. Do not rely on an assumed cache lifetime; published guidance uses approximate durations that vary, not a fixed Meta guarantee. The debugger and a changed image URL are the dependable controls.

Prepare the page before requesting a new scrape
Emit one intentional tag in the initial HTML
View the raw page source or the server response, not only the post-rendered DOM in developer tools. The page should contain one explicit tag such as:
<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.example.com/social/article-v2.jpg">Use an absolute HTTPS URL. Keep the tag in server-rendered HTML because many unfurlers do not execute client-side JavaScript. Remove duplicate or conflicting og:image tags so Facebook has one deliberate value to select.
Make the image downloadable by a crawler
Request the image URL from outside your private network. It should resolve without a login, firewall rule, or bot challenge, follow reasonable redirects, return a successful response, and advertise an image content type. A browser displaying an image from your own session does not prove that Facebook can download it. Check the final URL, response status, and content type, and make sure HTTPS certificates are valid.

Deploy both pieces together
Publish the corrected HTML and image before opening the debugger. If your deployment uses a CDN, purge or invalidate the page and image objects where appropriate, then verify the public response from a separate network. The debugger can only fetch what is currently available at the public URL.

Refresh the preview with Facebook’s Sharing Debugger
- Open the Facebook Sharing Debugger. Enter the exact page URL that people share, including its protocol, path, and any meaningful query string. A different canonical URL, trailing slash, or redirect target can represent a different fetch.
- Inspect the diagnostic result. Confirm that Facebook fetched the expected URL, extracted your new
og:imagevalue, and can download that image. Read warnings rather than relying only on the thumbnail. - Click “Scrape Again.” This requests a fresh fetch of the page-level metadata and image. Wait for the debugger to finish and confirm that its preview now shows the intended artwork.
- Version the image URL if the old picture remains. Rename the file, for example from
article.jpgtoarticle-v2.jpg, or add a harmless query parameter such asarticle.jpg?v=2. Updateog:imageto that new URL, deploy it, and click Scrape Again once more. The changed image URL gives the crawler a new cache key. - Check the actual share. After the debugger shows the corrected preview, inspect an existing Facebook post and, if necessary, create a new share. A URL-level re-scrape does not guarantee that every already-published attachment will redraw identically.

Troubleshoot a preview that will not update
The debugger says “missing og:image”
Add an explicit og:image tag to the initial HTML response. Do not depend on Facebook inferring an image from page content, CSS, or a client-side script. Confirm that your deployment serves the tag for the exact URL entered in the debugger.

The image cannot be downloaded
Test the public image URL without your logged-in browser session. Check DNS, TLS, redirects, access-control rules, response status, and the Content-Type header. A hotlink protection rule, robots-related access policy, expiring signed URL, or authentication requirement can prevent a crawler from retrieving an otherwise valid image.
The page has duplicate or conflicting tags
Search the raw response for every property="og:image" occurrence. Templates, plugins, and SEO extensions can emit multiple values. Remove unintended copies and leave one absolute URL that points to the image you want shared.

The tags are added only by JavaScript
Move the metadata into the server-rendered document head. Crawler diagnostics may not run your client-side rendering pipeline, so a tag visible only after hydration can be invisible to Facebook.

The image is too small or otherwise unsuitable
Use a social-share image with enough resolution for the placement and inspect the debugger’s warning. Because requirements can change, follow the current warning rather than promising a universal pixel or file-size threshold.
The preview still shows the previous pixels
Changing the bytes at the same image URL may not change the asset Facebook has cached for that URL. Publish a new filename or add a version query, point og:image to it, and run Scrape Again. This is the practical fix described in Jlive’s guidance on outdated Facebook images.
The debugger is correct but an old post is not
Treat the debugger result and the attachment already stored in Facebook as separate checks. The corrected debugger preview proves that a future fetch can obtain the new metadata; it does not promise that an existing post will be regenerated. Create a new share when the campaign or announcement requires the new artwork immediately.

A repeatable deployment checklist
- Generate one canonical, absolute HTTPS
og:imagevalue in server-rendered HTML. - Ensure the image is publicly downloadable and returns a valid image response.
- Remove duplicate tags and stale template output.
- Deploy the page and image, then verify the public response.
- Run the exact URL through Facebook’s Sharing Debugger and read its warnings.
- Click Scrape Again.
- If needed, version the image URL and repeat the scrape.
- Check a new share and separately inspect any existing post that matters.

Does adding ?v=2 to an image URL change the shared page URL?
No. The page URL can remain unchanged while the versioned image URL gives Facebook a different cache key. Keep the new value in og:image and scrape the page again.
Should I wait for a particular number of hours before retrying?
No fixed Facebook cache lifetime is established here. Use the debugger to request a fresh fetch, and version the image URL when unchanged-URL scraping continues to return the old asset.
