To refresh the page you are viewing, click the browser’s Reload button, press Ctrl + R on Windows or Linux, or press Command + R on a Mac. On a phone or tablet, tap Reload or use pull-to-refresh where supported. If the page is still stale, unstyled, or frozen, use a hard refresh—but copy unsaved form text first and never repeatedly reload a payment or submission that may still be processing.
Refresh with the Reload button
- Find the circular-arrow Reload icon near the address bar on a desktop browser. On a phone, it may be beside the address bar or inside the browser menu.
- Click or tap Reload.
- Wait for the loading indicator to finish. The current tab and URL normally stay open; the Reload control may temporarily become a Stop control.
A refresh, reload, or re-fetch asks the browser to request the current page again. It does not normally close the tab or navigate elsewhere. The browser may still reuse resources from its cache, and a server, CDN, service worker, or the website’s own application cache may supply older data.
Keyboard shortcuts by device and browser
| Device or browser | Normal refresh | Hard refresh or cache-bypass reload |
|---|---|---|
| Windows/Linux, most browsers | Ctrl + R or F5 | Usually Ctrl + F5 |
| Chrome or Edge on Windows/Linux | Ctrl + R or F5 | Ctrl + F5, or hold Ctrl while clicking Reload |
| Firefox on Windows/Linux | Ctrl + R or F5 | Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R |
| Chrome or Firefox on Mac | Command + R | Command + Shift + R |
| Safari on Mac | Command + R | Version-dependent; use Safari’s Develop menu as described below |
| Chromebook | Ctrl + R | Ctrl + Shift + R |
| iPhone, iPad, or Android | Tap Reload | No universal shortcut; use site/browser data controls or a private tab |
These shortcut patterns are documented in guidance from Igloo and Mozilla Support. Function keys may control brightness or volume instead of the browser; try Fn + F5 when necessary. On a Mac, use Command, not Control.
Refresh a page on iPhone, iPad, or Android
Mobile Safari
Tap the Reload icon near Safari’s address bar. Depending on your iOS or iPadOS layout, the bar can be at the top or bottom.

Pull to refresh
On many mobile webpages, drag downward from the top of the page until a refresh indicator appears, then release. This gesture is not available in every browser view, embedded webview, or website.
What a hard refresh does
A hard refresh asks the browser to bypass or revalidate more cached page resources instead of relying on existing local copies. It is useful when a recently changed site still shows an old stylesheet, script, image, layout, or incomplete page. It is an informal troubleshooting term, not one standardized operation; behavior varies with browser, cache type, service workers, server headers, CDNs, and application design.

A hard refresh does not necessarily clear cookies, sign you out, delete saved passwords or browsing history, repair a server outage, fix a bad connection, or reset every service-worker or application cache. It is narrower than clearing all browser data, as explained by Igloo.
Safari’s cache controls
- In Safari settings or preferences, open Advanced and enable Show Develop menu in menu bar if it is hidden.
- Choose Develop → Empty Caches.
- Reload with Command + R.
Some support pages list Option + Command + E for emptying Safari caches, but shortcut advice differs by Safari version. Treat it as version-dependent and use the menu path when in doubt. See Squarespace’s Safari cache instructions.

Chrome also exposes additional cache-clearing reload choices when Developer Tools are open: open Developer Tools, then open the Reload button’s context menu. This is a developer-oriented option, not the normal method for beginners.
Before you refresh: protect unsaved work
- Text typed into a form can disappear if the page reloads before it saves a draft. Copy important text first.
- Do not refresh while a payment, file upload, application, or account change is processing unless the service tells you to.
- If a transaction appears frozen, check your email, account or order history, and bank activity before trying again. Repeated submissions can create duplicate actions.
- A browser may show a “Resend form” warning after a POST request. Do not approve it blindly; it may submit the previous information again.
If refreshing does not fix the page
- Wait briefly and retry once. The original request may still be processing.
- Check connectivity. Open another website in a new tab. If several sites fail, investigate your network, VPN, DNS, firewall, or browser installation.
- Perform a hard refresh. Use the shortcut for your platform above.
- Test a private or incognito window. A separate session can reveal extension, cookie, or cached-session problems, but it is not a guaranteed repair.
- Temporarily disable extensions. Ad blockers, script blockers, privacy tools, translators, and password managers can interfere with a page.
- Try another browser or device. If the page works there, the original browser profile, extension, or local data is the likely cause.
- Clear only that site’s data when your browser offers the option. This may sign you out and remove local preferences or drafts, so save anything important first.
- Check for an outage and contact the service. A reload cannot repair a server-side failure.
Common symptoms
- F5 does nothing: use Ctrl + R, click Reload, or try Fn + F5.
- Old content remains: hard-refresh, then try site-specific data clearing if necessary. A CDN, service worker, or server cache may still be serving an older response.
- The page spins indefinitely: test another site, disable extensions, and try another browser or device.
- You were logged out: the session may have expired, or cookies/site storage may have been removed.
- The page remains broken after cache clearing: investigate the network, extensions, service worker, application bug, or server itself.
Refresh, reopen, and private browsing are different
| Action | What it tests or changes |
|---|---|
| Refresh | Requests the current URL again in the same tab and session. |
| Reopen the tab | Closes and opens the tab again; it may retain the same cached resources and session. |
| Open in a new tab | Tests a separate tab but does not inherently bypass cache. |
| Private/incognito window | Uses a separate browsing session with different cookies, storage, and usually fewer existing extensions. |
Single-page applications can update data without a full document reload, while a service worker or upstream cache can continue returning older assets. Refreshing the page also does not force a website’s backend or account data to update.

When to choose each method
- The page simply needs updating: use a normal Reload.
- A recent site change is not visible: use a hard refresh.
- Only one site is malfunctioning: test private browsing, then clear that site’s data if needed.
- Several sites fail: check the connection and network configuration.
- The page is frozen or blank: try a new tab, private window, another browser, and then site-specific troubleshooting.
- The website is unavailable everywhere: wait for the provider or contact its support team; refreshing will not fix an outage.
