To refresh the current page in desktop Chrome, click the Reload icon beside the address bar. You can also press F5 or Ctrl+R on Windows or Linux, or Command+R on Mac. To reload while ignoring cached content, use Shift+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+R on Mac.
Refresh a page in Chrome
Use the method that is most convenient:
- Toolbar: Click the Reload icon beside the address bar.
- Windows or Linux: Press F5 or Ctrl+R.
- Mac: Press Command+R.
These are desktop Chrome instructions. Google’s keyboard shortcut reference lists the operating-system shortcuts for reloading the current page.
Hard refresh: reload while ignoring cached content
If a page seems to show an older version, try Chrome’s shortcut for “Reload the current page, ignoring cached content.” On Windows or Linux, press Shift+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R. On Mac, press Command+Shift+R.
This reload action ignores cached content; it is not the same as clearing all browser data, and it cannot fix a problem on the website’s server. Google documents the action and shortcuts in its Chrome keyboard shortcut reference.

If refreshing does not fix the page
A reload is a useful first step, but a page can still fail because of an incorrect URL, connection trouble, Chrome or device state, limited resources, or an issue with the website. Try these checks in order.
- Check the address. Make sure the URL is correct, then click Reload again. Google includes checking the address and reloading among its connection and loading error steps.
- Check your connection and whether other sites load. If multiple sites fail, look for a connection or network issue. If only one site fails, the cause could still be the browser, device, or that website.
- Try the page in an Incognito window. If it works there, Google recommends deleting cached images and files and cookies, then reloading. This is a separate troubleshooting action from an ordinary refresh; deleting cookies can affect saved site state and sign-ins. See Google’s page-loading error guidance.
- Reduce resource pressure. Close unneeded tabs and apps. If the issue may involve an extension, close unnecessary extensions and try again.
- Follow the instructions for the specific error. Depending on the problem, Google’s guidance may include restarting the computer or updating Chrome. These are not necessary for every failed reload: see page crash and loading error help or Chrome crash troubleshooting.
