To reframe a horizontal video for Shorts, Reels, TikTok, or another vertical placement, make a separate 9:16 version, then review and adjust the crop throughout the edit. Reframing changes what viewers see; it does not simply rename or resize the file. Keep the original edit intact and check faces, movement, captions, and graphics before exporting.
Choose the aspect ratio for the destination
Set the target format before reframing so you can judge what will fit in the new frame. Adobe’s social-video guide lists these practical starting points; placement requirements can change, so verify the current specifications for the exact destination before export.

Reframe the video step by step
- Preserve the original. Keep the source footage or master sequence unchanged. Create a separate sequence or canvas for each intended placement so adjustments for a vertical crop do not damage the widescreen version.
- Set the target canvas. Choose the destination’s aspect ratio first. For a vertical Short, Reel, or TikTok video, start with 9:16; use 16:9 for regular YouTube. Adobe lists 4:5 or 1:1 for Instagram in-feed and 1:1 or 4:5 for Facebook in-feed.
- Apply automatic reframing if your editor supports it. In Premiere Pro, select the sequence and choose Auto Reframe Sequence, select the target format such as vertical 9:16, and create the reframed sequence. The feature can also be applied to clips. - Review every shot and correct the crop. Automatic analysis is a starting point, not a substitute for review. Adjust position, scale, or rotation, and add keyframes when the subject or action moves. Check faces, products, captions, titles, and graphics at each cut; a crop that works in one shot may hide important content in the next. Adobe demonstrates these manual refinements in its Auto Reframe tutorial.
- Export and inspect the rendered file. Watch the exported version, not just the editing preview. Confirm that the subject stays visible, text is not cut off, and the framing remains intentional through transitions. Re-export after correcting any missed crop or keyframe.
Meet YouTube Shorts’ length and format rules
YouTube Help says a computer-uploaded Short may be up to three minutes and must have a square or vertical aspect ratio. YouTube’s date-specific rule says uploads made on or after October 15, 2024 that are square or vertical and up to three minutes are categorized as Shorts. For the stated eligibility, make sure the rendered video is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes. A horizontal 16:9 export is intended for regular YouTube rather than this Shorts format guidance.
Pick an editor that lets you correct the result
Premiere Pro
Premiere Pro’s Auto Reframe can process a sequence or clips and lets you refine framing after analysis, including position, scale, rotation, and keyframes. That makes it useful when a subject moves or different shots need individual attention. Feature names and availability may vary by version; consult Adobe’s current instructions.

CapCut
CapCut documents Auto Reframe with aspect-ratio selection and adjustment options, and separately describes changing the canvas ratio for vertical video. Feature availability can vary by app version and device. Check the instructions for the version you use: CapCut Auto Reframe and CapCut’s vertical video guide.
When choosing an editor, check whether reframing works on a whole sequence or only individual clips, whether you can manually adjust the crop, and whether keyframes are available for moving subjects. The automatic result should always be reviewed.
