Refactor a bookstore management system by improving its internal structure in small steps while keeping its observable behavior the same. First record what the system currently does, then isolate one maintenance problem, make a focused change, and check the same use cases before moving on. Because no particular codebase, language, or business rules are specified here, the model below is illustrative—not a claim about an existing project.
What refactoring means for a bookstore system
Martin Fowler defines refactoring as “a change made to the internal structure of software to make it easier to understand and cheaper to modify without changing its observable behavior.” In practice, that means changing how responsibilities are organized without intentionally changing what users or other systems observe. For a bookstore, observable behavior might include how an order is created, which price is recorded on an order line, or how inventory is updated. The exact behaviors depend on the system’s requirements. Refactoring is not a reason to silently introduce new policies or change outputs; treat behavior changes as separate, explicit work.
Fowler’s Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code describes the technique as a controlled series of small, behavior-preserving transformations. Its second edition was published in 2018 and covers the process, code smells, testing, and a catalog of refactorings.

Start with behavior, not a new class diagram
Before moving code, identify the use cases the current system already supports and how to recognize their outcomes. This gives each structural change a behavior to preserve. Do not assume the system has automated tests: use existing checks where available, and create focused checks around important behavior if practical.
- Choose a real maintenance problem. For example, identify a place where one component handles unrelated tasks or where changing order processing also requires editing inventory code. Use an observed problem in your own code, not a presumed defect.
- Record the relevant behavior. Note the inputs, important state changes, and outputs for the affected use case. Include edge cases only when they are part of the system’s actual requirements.
- Make one structural change. Move or clarify a responsibility without adding unrelated features or changing business rules.
- Check the same behavior. Run the relevant automated tests or manually verify the recorded use case. If it differs, investigate before proceeding.
- Repeat in small increments. Keep each change narrow enough that a failure is easier to locate and undo.
Fowler notes that automated IDE refactorings can help with supported transformations; when tool support is absent, frequent testing helps check that behavior remains intact. Neither tool-assisted editing nor a passing check proves that every possible behavior is covered.

Use a domain model that reflects actual requirements
Object-oriented design is more than converting every database table into a class. A useful domain model connects meaningful concepts with relevant state and behavior. Fowler describes a domain model as interconnected objects representing concepts in the problem domain. Microsoft likewise illustrates how a business rule can belong in a domain model—for example, an e-commerce rule about customers with unpaid orders. That example is not a bookstore policy; place rules according to the requirements of the system being refactored.
One documented bookstore example from Jmix includes Customer, Order, OrderLine, Product, ProductCategory, and Supplier. In that model, a customer can have multiple orders, an order consists of lines, and each line links a product with order-specific information such as price. Products connect to categories and suppliers. The project also includes supplier-order and HR areas. This is one possible model, not a required class list for every bookstore.

- Order-line details: If the system records a price for each line, keep that order-specific value associated with the line rather than treating it as only a property of the product.
- Relationships: Represent only relationships the requirements need. A category or supplier association may be useful in one system and unnecessary in another.
- Rules: Put a rule near the domain state it governs when that makes the rule clearer and keeps it consistent. Avoid inventing policies—such as stock reservation, returns, taxes, or reorder thresholds—that are not established by the actual application.
Separate cart state, order coordination, and inventory work
A legacy Oracle Java EE bookstore sample offers a useful responsibility example, not a current framework recommendation. It separates a stateful ShoppingCartBean, a CashierBean that coordinates order processing and business logic, and a BookAccountBean that updates book inventory in the database. The lesson is that maintaining a cart, coordinating an order, and accounting for stock are distinct concerns, even if a particular system implements them with different classes or services.
When examining your code, trace one representative order flow and ask where each concern currently lives. A possible target boundary might look like this:

- Cart or checkout state: Holds the selections and other state needed before an order is placed.
- Order coordination: Orchestrates the steps required by the application’s actual order workflow.
- Inventory persistence: Performs the system’s defined inventory updates and database interactions.
These are responsibility descriptions, not a mandate to create three classes. If the current design already keeps them separate, do not refactor simply to match the sample. If one component mixes them, extract a responsibility only when doing so improves a concrete maintenance problem and the existing behavior can be checked.

When several parts of the system need attention, prioritize the change that removes a specific source of confusion or makes a likely future change easier. Keep the boundary of each step small, especially around order and inventory behavior, where an unintended change can have visible consequences.

- Clarify a responsibility: Move a cohesive operation out of a component that handles unrelated concerns, while retaining its inputs, outputs, and effects.
- Make a domain relationship explicit: If order lines, products, or customers are represented ambiguously, reshape the model to express the actual relationship without changing what the application does.
- Keep orchestration distinct from policy: Coordination code can call domain behavior, but rules should not be scattered across unrelated UI or persistence code when the domain model can express them coherently.
- Defer framework rewrites: The title does not establish a language, architecture, or framework. A framework migration is not required to improve object responsibilities and can combine structural risk with behavior changes.
What this approach does—and does not—establish
The examples show ways to think about domain concepts and responsibility boundaries; they do not identify the language, database, current code smells, test coverage, or business rules of any particular bookstore system. Use your code and requirements to decide which changes are warranted. No productivity, defect-rate, or performance improvement follows automatically from using OOP or performing refactoring; the defensible goal is clearer structure with preserved behavior.
