Brave advertises built-in blocking for YouTube ads and trackers, and it provides settings to update or customize its filter lists. That can make YouTube more convenient in Brave, but it is not a guarantee that every ad will be blocked or a verified replacement for YouTube Premium. Here’s how to check Brave’s filters and what its other YouTube features do.

What Brave’s YouTube blocking does—and what it doesn’t promise

Brave says its browser blocks ads, trackers, and other YouTube annoyances. Its published blocking policy specifically describes blocking pre-roll and mid-roll ads on video sites such as YouTube. These are Brave’s product claims, not a guarantee of identical results across devices, releases, regions, accounts, or viewing sessions.

Brave also acknowledges that website behavior and attempts to circumvent protections vary, saying it can only “approximate” its blocking policy. If an ad appears, the result does not necessarily mean filters are disabled; the outcome may depend on the site’s current behavior and the browser’s filtering configuration.

Update Brave’s filter lists

Start by updating the built-in lists. Brave’s Help Center documents these routes; labels can vary by browser version.

#1 Best Overall
  • Desktop: Open brave://settings/shields/filters, or go to Settings → Shields → Content filtering, then select Update lists.
  • iPhone or iPad: Open Settings → Shields & Privacy → Content Filtering, then tap Update Lists.
  • Android: Open Settings → Brave Shields & privacy → Content filtering, then tap UPDATE.

Updating lists refreshes the filter rules Brave uses. It is a sensible first step if YouTube behavior changes, but it cannot ensure that every current ad or site change will be handled.

Optional lists and custom filters

Brave lets you enable additional filter lists, including regional ad lists, and create custom filters. In its Content filtering settings, you can select available lists for broader filtering. You can also use Block elements to hide page elements or enter rules manually. These controls are optional; you do not need a custom rule simply to use Brave’s built-in YouTube blocking.

Brave says its filters are broadly compatible with uBlock Origin’s filter-rule syntax. Compatibility is not necessarily exact, so a rule or list may not behave identically in every case. Avoid adding unfamiliar lists or rules as a routine fix: they can block page features you want or cause a site to behave incorrectly.

Standard and Aggressive blocking: the trade-off

Brave’s policy distinguishes its two blocking levels by which requests they filter:

  • Standard: Brave does not apply network-level filter-list blocking to first-party requests. This can be less disruptive to site functionality.
  • Aggressive: Brave applies network-level blocking to first-party as well as third-party requests. Brave says optional and custom lists operate in Aggressive mode.

Aggressive filtering can block more, but stricter rules also increase the chance that a site feature will break. If YouTube stops loading or a control disappears after you enable an extra list or custom rule, return to Content filtering and undo that change. Prefer the built-in configuration unless you have a specific reason to broaden it.

What “almost like Premium” means in Brave

Brave lists background playback with lockscreen controls among its YouTube-related conveniences, along with content controls. Its product information also identifies playlists as an iOS-only feature. Availability therefore depends on the platform, and not every feature is offered everywhere.

Those conveniences do not establish feature parity with YouTube Premium. Brave’s published feature information supports describing its own browser features, but it does not provide a verified side-by-side account of Premium benefits. Treat Brave as a browser with ad-blocking features and some playback conveniences, not as a confirmed substitute for a Premium subscription.
