Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To reduce mobile data use while a VPN is on, first find which apps are consuming cellular data, then limit unnecessary background activity. You can also test a different VPN protocol, move large downloads to Wi-Fi, or use split tunneling—but apps excluded from the VPN lose its protection. There is no established percentage by which one setting will reduce usage, so compare your phone’s data use under similar conditions.
Does a VPN use more mobile data?
It can. A VPN carries your app traffic through an encrypted connection and adds protocol overhead, which may increase mobile data use. Google Pixel Phone Help notes that “any VPN may” increase mobile data costs, alongside other possible effects. Google does not give a universal percentage, and the sources cited here do not establish a standard amount of extra data or savings for a particular protocol.
Keep two goals separate: reducing the amount of data apps generate, and reducing how much traffic passes through the VPN. Restricting background transfers can reduce cellular use overall. Split tunneling instead routes selected apps outside the VPN; it does not necessarily reduce those apps’ underlying data consumption.
Find what is using your cellular data
Start with your phone’s per-app mobile data report for the current billing period. Look for apps using a lot of cellular data in the background, such as cloud backup, photo sync, app updates, or media downloads. These are possibilities to check, not causes that apply to every phone.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Record the current usage, billing-period dates, and any relevant app totals before changing settings. To judge whether a change helped, compare equivalent periods or repeat the same activity; different browsing or streaming habits can make a before-and-after comparison misleading.
Limit unnecessary background data
Restrict background activity for apps that do not need to sync or download while you are away from Wi-Fi. On Android, Data Saver limits some apps’ ability to send or receive background data, and selected apps can be allowed exceptions. The exact settings path and labels vary by Android device and carrier; AT&T’s guide describes the feature but is not a universal menu map.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- Review high-use apps and disable background mobile data or automatic downloads where your device offers those controls.
- Keep exceptions for apps that need timely background access, such as messaging or security tools.
- Use your device’s data-saving mode if it fits your needs, then check whether important apps still behave as expected.
Test your VPN protocol setting
If your VPN app offers a protocol choice, try WireGuard or the provider’s automatic protocol option and compare usage during similar activity. CyberGhost recommends WireGuard in its Android guidance and claims it can use less data; treat that as provider advice, not a universal independently measured result. Proton VPN documents multiple protocol choices and Smart Protocol for supported apps, but the cited material does not establish a cross-provider ranking by data savings.
Change one setting at a time and keep the VPN’s other settings and your activity as consistent as possible. A protocol experiment is useful only if your app supports it and your comparison controls for differences in what you did online.

Use split tunneling only when an app can go without VPN protection
Split tunneling lets you choose apps whose traffic bypasses the VPN. That can reduce the traffic routed through the tunnel, but it does not guarantee lower total cellular use. More importantly, excluded app traffic no longer receives protection from that VPN. Google documents app exclusions for VPN by Google on Pixel devices; availability and controls differ across VPN apps and platforms.
Exclude only apps for which bypassing the VPN is acceptable. Depending on your carrier and plan, routing traffic outside the VPN may also affect whether the carrier recognizes plan-specific exempt data; the exact rules are carrier-specific and are not established here.

Move large transfers to Wi-Fi and manage idle apps
Schedule large downloads, app updates, and media transfers for Wi-Fi when practical. Close or restrict apps that do not need to sync in the background. These steps address when and whether an app transfers data, rather than changing how the VPN handles traffic.
Disconnecting the VPN when you do not need it is another option, but it is a privacy decision: while disconnected, the traffic is no longer protected by that VPN. Do not treat switching it off as a data-saving setting without considering that trade-off.

Check whether the changes worked
- Note per-app cellular usage and the dates covered by your phone’s report.
- Make one change, such as limiting an app’s background data or switching the VPN protocol.
- Repeat the same kind of activity under similar conditions, or compare equivalent billing periods.
- Check the usage report again and keep the change only if the result suits your data needs without disrupting apps or protection you rely on.
Results depend on your phone, VPN app, carrier, plan, and usage. The official guidance cited here does not provide a universal savings figure, a controlled comparison of VPN protocols, or iOS-specific data-saving steps.
