To make a full-page website screenshot smaller, reduce its pixel dimensions to what you need, choose a compressed format such as WebP or JPEG if some quality loss is acceptable, or optimize a copy of the original. Keep PNG when exact pixel fidelity matters. After each change, inspect small text and sharp edges before using the result.
Why full-page screenshots get large
A screenshot’s file size depends chiefly on its pixel count and how those pixels are encoded. A full-page capture can be far taller than the visible browser window, so it contains many more pixels than a viewport screenshot. Reducing dimensions lowers the amount of detail available; lossy compression can reduce bytes without changing dimensions, but may introduce artifacts.
Choose the approach according to the final use: an image displayed at a small size may not need its original dimensions, while an image intended for close inspection should retain more detail.

Reduce the size of a new full-page screenshot
1. Capture at the width you actually need
In Chrome, open DevTools Device Mode, choose a device or enter custom viewport dimensions, then select More options > Capture a full size screenshot. This captures content beyond the visible viewport. Avoid using a wider viewport than the image’s intended use requires; a wider capture contains more pixels and can make the output larger.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Resize a copy to its delivery dimensions
If the screenshot will appear in a document or webpage at a smaller size, resize a copy toward that display size. Keep the full-resolution original if readers may need to zoom in or inspect details. Downscaling reduces both file size and available detail.
Some capture tools provide maximum width and height settings that downscale while preserving aspect ratio. For example, Chrome DevTools MCP documents these controls for that tool; other browser interfaces may expose different options.

3. Pick a format for the destination
| Format | Use it when | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Lossless output or exact pixel fidelity matters. | It can be larger than lossy alternatives for complex full-page images. |
| JPEG | A widely familiar lossy format is acceptable. | Compression can affect small text and sharp edges; JPEG does not support transparency. |
| WebP | The destination supports it and you want a modern format with lossy or lossless options. | Lossy settings can affect fine detail; check compatibility with the destination. |
| AVIF | You have confirmed the destination supports it and prioritize compression. | Compatibility needs to be checked in the intended workflow. |
Google’s WebP documentation describes WebP images as about 30% smaller than PNG and JPEG at equivalent visual quality. That is a general format comparison, not a guaranteed saving for any particular screenshot. Google’s WebP documentation also describes WebP’s lossy and lossless modes and transparency support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Lower lossy quality gradually and inspect
Make a copy, reduce the quality setting in small steps, and inspect the result at normal display size and enlarged. Pay particular attention to small text, thin rules, icons, and gradients. There is no single quality value that works for every page and use; choose the smallest file that remains legible for its intended audience.

The Chrome DevTools Protocol documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshot formats, and a quality parameter for JPEG. Do not assume a browser UI or another capture tool exposes the same formats or controls. The Page domain protocol documentation describes its screenshot options.
Compress an existing PNG screenshot
- Keep the original file unchanged and work on a copy.
- Use an image optimizer or convert the copy to a supported lossy format. Chrome for Developers names ImageOptim, Squoosh, and Imagemin as tools for adjusting image compression.
- If converting to JPEG or lossy WebP, lower quality gradually rather than choosing an aggressive setting immediately.
- Compare the output’s dimensions and file size with the original, then inspect text and edges at normal size and enlarged.
- Use the optimized copy only if its visual quality and format are suitable for the destination.
Lossless PNG or WebP preserves pixel data but may produce a larger file than lossy encoding. Lossy formats can produce visible artifacts, especially around sharp edges and fine lettering. The result depends on the image and settings, so check the actual output instead of assuming a particular saving. Chrome for Developers’ image-delivery guidance covers compression, modern formats, and appropriately sized images.

Choose the right tradeoff
- Need exact pixels: retain PNG or use a lossless workflow, and accept that the file may be larger.
- Need a smaller file for ordinary viewing: try WebP or JPEG at gradually reduced quality, then check fine detail.
- The image will display smaller than it was captured: resize a copy to a suitable delivery size while keeping the original for later inspection.
- Need transparency: avoid JPEG; use a format and workflow that supports transparency, such as WebP.
- Need to share or upload the result: confirm that the recipient’s application or platform accepts the chosen format.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP; the response format and capture options let you choose an output suited to your workflow. A single GET request can capture a URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters and response details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
