Start by finding out whether PFAS have been detected in your drinking water. Ask your water utility for test results and check state or local health guidance; if you use a private well, arrange testing through a state-certified laboratory. If local results indicate a concern, a point-of-use filter certified specifically for PFAS reduction may help. Product choices and other steps should be guided by the PFAS identified and by local advice—not by the assumption that every home is contaminated.

What PFAS are and how exposure can happen

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a broad class of chemicals, not one substance. Possible exposure sources include drinking water, contaminated sites, firefighting foam, manufacturing waste, some consumer products and food packaging, and food such as fish, dairy, meat, or vegetables affected by contamination. Which sources matter varies by location and household.

EPA says drinking water can account for a significant portion of total PFAS exposure in some contaminated places, but the contribution depends on water concentrations and other environmental conditions. That makes local water information a practical starting point, not proof that a particular household has a problem. EPA’s overview of PFAS describes the range of possible sources.

Find out whether your drinking water has PFAS

If your home uses public water

  1. Ask your water utility for PFAS test results and information about sampling locations and dates. Start with the utility’s website or customer-service contact.
  2. Check your state environmental or health department’s PFAS guidance for local results, advisories, or additional testing information.
  3. Use those results and local guidance to decide whether treatment is warranted. EPA notes that if PFAS have not been measured or are below federal limits, a home filter may not be useful for a household.

Federal drinking-water limits are standards for public water systems; they do not tell you the result at every tap or replace advice about an individual health concern. EPA’s current rulemaking page describes proposed changes to the federal PFAS standards. As of the proposal described there, EPA proposed keeping the PFOA and PFOS limits while allowing eligible systems to request two more years, through 2031, to comply, and proposed rescinding and reconsidering standards for PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), and the hazard-index mixture that includes PFBS. These are proposals, not final changes. Check EPA’s current PFAS drinking-water rule page and ask your utility about the status that applies to your system.

If your home uses a private well

  1. Contact your state environmental or health agency and ask how to arrange PFAS testing through a state-certified laboratory.
  2. Ask whether the laboratory uses EPA-developed methods and follow the laboratory’s sampling and handling instructions.
  3. If the well is known or suspected to be affected, follow state or local advice about drinking and household water use while you determine next steps.

EPA advises considering an alternate water source for drinking, preparing food, cooking, brushing teeth, preparing infant formula, and other uses where water may be swallowed when a private well is known or suspected to have PFAS. See EPA’s guidance for private wells affected by PFAS and ask your state agency what applies locally.

When a water filter may help—and how to choose one

EPA identifies granular activated carbon (GAC), reverse osmosis (RO), and ion-exchange resins as technologies that can reduce PFAS in drinking water. Options include point-of-use systems such as pitchers, faucet filters, and under-sink units. The technology alone does not establish that a particular product reduces the PFAS found in your water.

Verify certification for the exact model

  1. Look for a claim of PFAS reduction tied to NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58, rather than a general claim that a product is “NSF certified” or removes contaminants.
  2. Search the current directory of an accredited certification body for the exact make and model. Confirm which PFAS compounds the listing covers; a certification for one product in a brand’s line does not establish certification for another.
  3. Compare the listed PFAS with the compounds in your water results. If the product’s coverage or certification status is unclear, ask the manufacturer or certification body before buying.

EPA’s filter-identification guidance explains how to check for PFAS-specific certification. Its description, explicitly dated April 2024, focuses on PFOA and PFOS and cautions that the standards then described did not establish reduction to the levels in EPA’s newer drinking-water standard. Certification evaluates stated effectiveness and contaminant-reduction claims; it is not a promise that treated water will meet every health or regulatory benchmark. Check the current directory and criteria rather than relying on an old label or general marketing language.

Weigh maintenance, water use, and cost

  • Replacement and upkeep: Follow the manufacturer’s cartridge and membrane schedule. EPA warns that filters only work as intended when maintained as instructed; a late replacement can increase exposure risk.
  • RO water use: EPA’s RO overview says the systems it describes waste about one gallon of water per gallon treated. Actual performance varies by system. RO also needs cartridge and membrane changes and may need additional treatment depending on incoming water quality.
  • Installation and expense: EPA pages give broad source-era estimates, not current quotes: about $20 to more than $1,000 for home filters depending on type and installation, and about $150–$1,000 for RO systems, before maintenance. Get current equipment and replacement costs for the exact system.
  • Fit for your water: Check the compounds covered, installation needs, filter life, replacement cost, water use, disposal, and suitability for your household’s water conditions before choosing.

EPA’s pages on home filters for reducing PFAS and PFAS treatment technologies describe options and trade-offs. Treat their broad price figures as estimates, not today’s quotes; there is no basis here for naming one model as best for every household.

Address other possible sources without overreacting

Use local food and fish guidance

Check state or tribal fish-advisory programs for waterways where PFAS contamination is a concern, and follow any local advice about fish. EPA specifically advises avoiding fish from waterways with PFAS advisories. The relevant guidance is location-specific.

Check product information where it is available

EPA’s private-well guidance suggests looking for PFAS-free labeling and reviewing Safety Data Sheets where available. Labels and sheets can help you assess a product, but they do not by themselves prove that a product is independently verified or quantify your total exposure. EPA identifies some stain- or water-repellent fabrics, carpets and upholstery, cleaning products, nonstick cookware, paints, varnishes, and sealants as possible exposure pathways. The presence of a product in a category does not establish that a specific item is a meaningful source in your home.

These tests prove that the durable integral design clears up worries about cracking cases and leaking issue

Young children may have greater exposure potential because they crawl on floors, put objects in their mouths, and take in more food, water, and air per unit of body weight. Prioritize known contamination and current local guidance; evidence here does not justify discarding household belongings simply because they belong to one of these product categories. EPA’s overview of PFAS risks and exposure pathways provides further context.

What household steps can—and cannot—do

A test, a certified filter, or an advisory can help address a particular identified source. None establishes that all exposure has stopped: PFAS are a diverse chemical class, and exposure can occur through multiple pathways. Use local water results, state or tribal guidance, and qualified health professionals for individual concerns. Do not assume boiling water removes PFAS or that a filter without PFAS-specific certification will reduce them.
