To reduce image-related network usage in an Android app, send images at the dimensions the screen needs, choose an efficient format and quality, cache responses to prevent repeat downloads, and adapt optional image requests on slow or metered connections. These measures work together; the total app-wide savings depend on how much of its traffic comes from images and how often requests can be reused.
Measure image traffic before changing it
Start by tracing image requests on the screens that matter. Record the requested and displayed dimensions, response bytes, repeat requests, cache behavior, and what the app does on slow or metered networks. Separate image transfers from API calls and background sync so you can tell whether an optimization changed image traffic.
Compare the same screens and usage patterns before and after each change. There is no universal savings percentage: results depend on the original image sizes, the variants and encodings you serve, cache hit rate, and the image share of total traffic.
Serve images close to their display size
A thumbnail should not download a full-resolution original only to be shrunk on the device. Android recommends serving appropriately sized images; its guidance says to “store multiple sizes of images, and serve the size that is most appropriate for a particular use case.” Android Developers: Reducing image download sizes

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Make the size decision at the request boundary
- Measure the image component’s rendered dimensions and account for the device density and any retina-scale requirement.
- Request a server-generated variant suited to that use, such as a small list thumbnail or a larger detail image.
- Configure the backend or image service to create and serve those variants. Include variant parameters in cache keys so a thumbnail cannot be mistaken for a full-size image.
- When network quality is poor, consider a smaller-than-usual variant or omit low-priority imagery altogether.
Sending one oversized original and downscaling it locally wastes transfer bytes and uses more device memory. Multiple variants require backend image-service support, and their cache policy should match how the variants are addressed.
Choose image format and quality for the content
Android’s image-size guidance discusses AVIF, PNG, JPG, and WebP. It reports AVIF support on Android 12 (API 31) and later, and WebP support from Android 4.2.1 (API 17); WebP supports lossy and lossless modes. Validate decoding against the app’s supported devices and actual image pipeline before making a format the default. Android Developers: Reducing image download sizes
Match encoding to visual requirements
- Use lossy encoding where small artifacts are acceptable, and compare output at the size users actually see.
- Preserve lossless detail or transparency where the design requires it; transparency and content type can affect file size.
- Test a representative set of photographs, illustrations, UI assets, and transparent images rather than selecting a format based on its name alone.
- For JPG and lossy WebP, tune quality by inspection: very low settings can visibly degrade an image, while very high settings may add bytes without noticeable improvement.
Android Developers’ page, last updated 2024-05-20, reports that WebP lossless files average 26% smaller than PNGs, while WebP lossless images with transparency use 22% more bytes. Those are figures reported by the documentation, not a prediction for a particular app’s images. The same page illustrates roughly a 65% reduction in one Butteraugli example; it is not a typical or guaranteed result. Android Developers: image-size guidance and examples

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Android describes Butteraugli as one way to evaluate perceptual distortion across formats. Whether you use that or visual review, compare the encoded files at their intended display size and include the images most likely to show compression artifacts.
Cache images to prevent repeat downloads
Use an image-loading library with a managed cache instead of building unbounded storage yourself. Android names Glide and Picasso as examples that fetch and cache images and can display placeholders; a subsequent request can be served from the local cache. Android Developers: image loading and caching
- Set a bounded cache policy so storage does not grow indefinitely.
- For HTTP image resources, use cache headers and validators such as ETag and Last-Modified to support reuse while checking whether content has changed.
- Ensure the cache identity includes relevant request differences, such as image size or transformation, so the wrong variant is not reused.
- Test both cold-cache and warm-cache behavior; a warm cache can hide an oversized first response.
Caching avoids transferring an unchanged image again when the local copy remains valid. It does not shrink the first response, so pair it with appropriately sized, efficiently encoded images.

Adapt optional images to network constraints
On Android 7.0 (API 24) and later, an app can inspect Data Saver status with ConnectivityManager.getRestrictBackgroundStatus() and listen for preference changes. Treat Data Saver and metered-network status as signals to offer a lower-data experience, not as the only time to make efficient requests. Android recommends limiting use on metered connections even if Data Saver is disabled or the app is allowed to bypass it. Android Developers: Optimize network data usage
Define a predictable low-data policy
- On slower connections, request smaller image variants, fetch fewer images, or omit nonessential images. Android’s connectivity guidance says to consider downloading lower-resolution media—or none at all—on slower connections. Android Developers: Connectivity for billions
- On metered networks, limit optional prefetching and other nonessential image requests whether or not Data Saver is enabled.
- Consider prefetching on higher-quality unmetered networks when it benefits the user, but avoid unexpected mobile-data use.
- Make any quality or image-loading preference understandable, especially if the app changes behavior automatically.
Data Saver documentation includes platform-specific behavior. Check the current API reference and the app’s minimum Android version before implementing status checks. Android Developers: Optimize network data usage

Keep the screen useful while images load
Show text before rich media where practical and use a placeholder while an image loads. A placeholder improves perceived responsiveness but does not save image bytes if the app downloads the image afterward. To reduce transferred data, the app must also defer, downsize, or skip that request. Android’s guidance covers both presentation and adapting media to available bandwidth. Separate runtime image traffic from app download size
Compressing images bundled in the app can reduce packaged resource size and potentially the install download. It is a separate optimization from runtime network bytes for images fetched from a backend. For this goal, measure remote image responses and cache reuse rather than treating a smaller APK as evidence of lower runtime image usage. Android Developers: Reduce your app size
