Compressing an MP4 only reduces the size of the stored file; it does not automatically reduce the data used by a 24/7 YouTube live stream. To cut ongoing data use, lower the live encoder’s total output bitrate—and, if the picture remains acceptable, its resolution or frame rate. Estimate the monthly upload from that bitrate, then compare it with your plan’s usable data allowance and sustained upload capacity.

First distinguish MP4 file size from live-stream data

MP4 is a container for encoded video and audio. Re-encoding its contents can make the file smaller by changing bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or quality. But a live broadcast sends the encoder’s output continuously. If that output is configured at a fixed bitrate, making the source MP4 smaller does not by itself lower the live stream’s upload rate.

This distinction matters whether you play a prerecorded MP4 locally or loop it as the source for a live broadcast: the live encoder still sends its configured stream while the video plays. Re-encode when you need to save storage or transfer data, or when the source is being encoded for the broadcast and you also adjust the live output settings. Do not re-encode repeatedly; each lossy pass can discard more information.

Choose live settings that fit your data plan

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, gives recommended bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of acceptable picture quality for every scene or of a stable connection.

Source: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, accessed 2026-10-03. The ranges are guidance for the listed settings, not a promise that the lowest value will look good. YouTube’s live encoder page also lists RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. It lists 128 Kbps as a recommended stereo audio bitrate, not a mandatory value for every stream.

Start with a representative test

  1. Choose the lowest resolution and bitrate that preserve the detail your channel needs. For mostly static content, you can test a lower resolution or frame rate, but inspect text, edges, motion, and compression artifacts rather than assuming quality will be acceptable.
  2. Use YouTube’s current ingest guidance for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Configure CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and use a supported audio codec and protocol.
  3. Run a test with the actual type of video, audio, and graphics you plan to stream. Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and watch playback over a separate viewer connection.
  4. If the stream stalls or YouTube reports health problems, reduce the total bitrate or address the connection before treating the setting as suitable for continuous use.

YouTube states that “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” A short speed-test peak does not show whether a connection can sustain an encoder setting around the clock. Check sustained upload performance and monitor audio and video quality; leave practical room for variation and other network traffic. YouTube does not specify a universal headroom percentage. See YouTube Help: Streaming tips.

Estimate monthly data before committing to a bitrate

For a steady upload, estimate data using the total outgoing bitrate, including audio. Decimal-unit arithmetic gives about 10.8 GB per day for each 1 Mbps: 1 Mbps × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte. Over 30 days, that is about 324 GB per Mbps.

Total outgoing bitrate Approximate use per day Approximate use over 30 days
0.5 Mbps 5.4 GB 162 GB
1 Mbps 10.8 GB 324 GB
3 Mbps 32.4 GB 972 GB

These are calculations for a continuous, steady stream—not published usage measurements. Actual counted use can be higher because of protocol overhead, reconnects, other household or app traffic, and the way your operator measures data. If you calculate from video bitrate alone, add audio and allow for overhead. Compare the estimate with your plan’s usable monthly allowance, fair-use terms, and any post-cap throttling. Data-plan limits and terms vary by provider and location; no particular Indian operator’s plan is established here.

When and how to shrink the MP4 itself

If the goal is a smaller file for storage or transfer, re-encode a short representative sample first. A smaller output generally involves a trade-off in quality, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate; the amount of size reduction depends on the source and chosen settings.

  1. Keep an untouched copy of the original.
  2. Choose an encoder and test a short section that includes the channel’s typical motion, text, and audio.
  3. Adjust the encoding quality target, bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, then inspect the result at the size viewers will actually see.
  4. Check audio and playback before encoding the full file. There is no guaranteed file size for a particular quality setting.

FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes libx264 options such as CRF, a quality target, and preset, which trades encoding speed against compression behavior. See FFmpeg Codecs Documentation. No single CRF value guarantees a particular file size. Avoid repeated lossy encodes because each pass may lose more detail.

YouTube’s upload recommendations are separate from its live ingest settings. For uploads, YouTube recommends the MP4 container and H.264 video, with AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio options at a 48 kHz sample rate. It also recommends placing the MP4 moov atom at the front (“Fast Start”), which can help progressive playback; it does not reduce the live encoder’s output bitrate. See YouTube Help: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

Common problems and fixes

  • The file is smaller, but data use is unchanged: the live encoder is still sending its configured output bitrate. Lower the encoder’s total stream bitrate and verify the result with a test.
  • The picture breaks up after lowering bitrate: the setting may be too low for the content’s motion or detail. Test a higher value within YouTube’s guidance, or try a lower resolution or frame rate and compare quality.
  • The stream drops despite a good speed-test result: a brief peak does not prove sustained upload capacity. Test over a longer period, check competing network use, and monitor YouTube stream health.
  • The data estimate is below the operator’s reported use: the calculation excludes overhead, reconnects, and other traffic, and providers may count data differently. Compare against the plan’s usable allowance and leave room for those differences.
  • The uploaded MP4 takes time to begin playback: Fast Start can help progressive playback by placing the moov atom at the front, but it is not a live bitrate or data-saving setting.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded YouTube channel, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a home computer online: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud service loops uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home; it is YouTube-only and does not broadcast from a camera.
