If phone use makes you feel sick as a passenger, first try Android’s Remove animations setting to reduce some screen transitions. It is not a substitute for Motion Assist’s vehicle-matched visual cues. If symptoms continue, put the phone away and look toward the horizon—or close your eyes if you can. These steps may help, but none is a guaranteed fix.

Try Android’s Remove animations setting

Android’s accessibility guidance lists Remove animations for people who experience motion sickness, photosensitivity, or seizure triggers. It reduces certain system and image transition effects in supported apps. It does not add visual cues synchronized with a vehicle’s turns, acceleration, or braking, and Google does not describe it as a treatment for motion sickness.

Look in your Android device’s accessibility settings for Remove animations. The exact menu path can vary by device and Android version; Google’s Android accessibility guide explains the feature. Try it if moving interface elements bother you, then see whether using the screen feels more comfortable.

How this differs from Android Motion Assist

Motion Assist is designed to show motion-related visual cues while a passenger uses a phone. Google describes small bubbles along the screen edges that move in real time based on the phone’s motion sensors, corresponding to turns, acceleration, and braking. Remove animations only reduces certain interface transitions; it does not reproduce that behavior.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Google says Motion Assist requires Android 17 or higher and updated Google Play Services. To check whether it is available, search Settings for “Motion assist,” or go to Settings > profile > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion assist. Google also documents a manual Quick Settings tile, automatic activation when vehicle motion is detected, and options to customize opacity, color theme, and shape. Automatic detection may not always recognize a moving vehicle. Availability and menu paths can change, so consult Google’s current Motion Assist instructions and your device’s Settings search.

When screen adjustments are not enough, stop the visual task

The most direct step is to put the phone away when symptoms begin. The CDC lists avoiding reading and visual scanning as behavioral countermeasures for motion sickness. That matters because looking at a nearby screen while your body senses vehicle movement can contribute to conflicting sensory signals.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

If you need to finish a phone task, do it before or after the trip rather than while the vehicle is moving. Do not use a phone while driving; these suggestions are for passengers.

  • Sit toward the front of a car or bus when you can, where seeing the road ahead may be easier.
  • Keep your head still and, if seated in a car, lean into bends when practical. CDC notes that these movements can be difficult to combine with other activities.
  • Close your eyes, lie down, or sleep if the journey and seating make that possible.
  • Stay hydrated and limit alcohol and caffeine, as CDC traveler guidance advises.

Fresh air, music, pleasant scents, and controlled breathing are additional options described by the CDC Yellow Book. They are distractions or behavioral approaches, not established cures for phone-triggered symptoms. CDC cautions that, apart from habituation, behavioral countermeasures are only partially effective.

If you use an iPhone instead

Apple offers Vehicle Motion Cues, a separate feature that displays animated dots at screen edges. On iPhone, find it at Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Vehicle Motion Cues; Apple also documents controls in Control Center. In Automatic mode, cues appear when the phone detects that the user is riding in a car or another on-road vehicle. Apple says they work best when seated facing forward.

This is an Apple feature, not an Android setting. Apple also has Reduce Motion, which decreases movement of onscreen elements and simplifies some screen actions; it is conceptually closer to Android’s Remove animations than to Vehicle Motion Cues. Apple warns that Vehicle Motion Cues should not be used while operating a moving vehicle or in other situations requiring safety attention. See Apple’s iPhone guide to using the phone more comfortably in a vehicle and its accessibility features overview.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

A 2017 study by Purdue University researchers and collaborators tested an e-reader prototype called MotionReader with 26 participants riding an urban bus. Participants read under three conditions: a conventional e-reader, text displaced to represent acceleration (“Text Inertia”), or an adjacent ball-and-spring visualization (“Gizmo”). The authors reported average motion-sickness scores of 0.29 for Text Inertia, 0.34 for the control, and 0.38 for Gizmo. They said the sample and groups were too small to draw statistical conclusions; these questionnaire averages are not percentages and do not show that current phone cues work. The study also reported reading-comprehension results of 21% correct for Text Inertia and 18% for each of the control and Gizmo groups, which likewise do not support broad performance conclusions. Read the paper, “MotionReader: Visual Acceleration Cues for Alleviating Passenger E-Reader Motion Sickness”.

That small study evaluated a different interface, not Android Motion Assist or Remove animations. The cited platform guidance describes how these features work, but does not establish a clinical effect size for Motion Assist. The study’s results should not be used to predict how much either Android option—or a third-party app—will help.

CDC says evidence does not support acupressure bands or magnets for motion sickness. It describes evidence for ginger as mixed and support for diets, supplements, and vitamins as weak or contradictory, so these should not be treated as proven alternatives to changing screen use or travel conditions.
