Reducing an HLS segment’s duration can make media available more often, but it does not by itself guarantee lower end-to-end latency. For ordinary HLS, Apple recommends nominal six-second segments. To publish media before a complete segment is ready, use a supported low-latency mode such as Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS), which delivers partial segments and depends on compatible packaging, playlist updates, delivery infrastructure, and players.

First identify what “segment size” means in your stream

In HLS, a complete media segment is the unit described by an EXTINF entry in a media playlist. Its duration affects how often complete segments become available. In LL-HLS, a producer can also publish partial segments, identified by EXT-X-PART, before the larger parent segment is complete. These are different tuning points: shortening ordinary segments is not the same as enabling LL-HLS parts.

Before changing a value, establish whether the encoder and packager produce standard HLS, LL-HLS, DASH, or another protocol. Check the generated playlists and the player’s supported modes. A shorter segment setting in one component cannot enable a low-latency mode that the rest of the delivery chain does not support.

What duration should you use for ordinary HLS?

Apple’s HLS authoring specification recommends target durations of six seconds and nominal six-second media segments. That is baseline authoring guidance, not a universal low-latency target. Simply lowering the complete-segment duration may increase publication and request frequency, but playback latency also depends on playlist refreshes, delivery through origins and caches, and the player’s buffering behavior.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep playlist timing valid when changing the setting. The EXTINF duration must accurately describe the following segment. RFC 8216 requires the rounded duration of each segment to be no greater than TARGETDURATION; longer segments can cause stalls or other playback errors. Apple further says segments must not exceed target duration by more than 0.5 seconds and requires accurate durations across contiguous content, with audio and video playlists using the same target duration and covering the same content duration.

Segment boundaries should also support decoding. The server should attempt to place boundaries at suitable points such as packet and key-frame boundaries. If audio and video renditions drift out of alignment, or a boundary falls where a decoder cannot smoothly begin, a nominally shorter segment can still produce poor playback.

When LL-HLS parts are the appropriate change

LL-HLS reduces the wait for a complete parent segment by allowing smaller partial segments to be packaged and published earlier. Apple’s example contrasts ordinary six-second segments with 200-millisecond partial segments; 200 ms is an illustration, not a general recommendation. Smaller parts can improve delivery cadence only when the producer, playlist, delivery path, and player all implement the required LL-HLS behavior.

Part duration must be chosen with network round-trip time (RTT) and playback hold-back in mind. Apple recommends a one-second Part Target Duration. It must be at least the P95 RTT expected for clients and should be at least three times that P95 RTT. PART-HOLD-BACK must be at least three times the Part Target Duration. These constraints help avoid choosing parts so short that network delay and buffering requirements undermine reliable playback.

Change the setting without breaking the stream

  1. Inspect the output, not just the encoder control. Confirm the protocol and examine a live media playlist. In standard HLS, note TARGETDURATION and the EXTINF values. For LL-HLS, also inspect EXT-X-PART, the part target, and hold-back declarations.
  2. Choose the intended mode. For conventional HLS, retain Apple’s nominal six-second guidance unless your delivery and player requirements justify another valid target. If viewers must stay closer to live, evaluate LL-HLS rather than assuming shorter complete segments alone will achieve that.
  3. Configure the packager and encoder together. Set segment or part timing in the component that actually creates the media and playlists. Ensure segment boundaries are decodable, and align audio and video rendition durations and coverage.
  4. Verify playlist correctness on a live output. Check that declared durations match actual media, that segments do not exceed the target-duration constraints, and that playlist updates arrive at the expected cadence. In LL-HLS, confirm the parts and hold-back satisfy Apple’s RTT-related guidance.
  5. Validate the full delivery path. Confirm the origin and CDN/cache behavior support the selected low-latency mode and that the playback client supports it. Apple notes LL-HLS requires supporting rules in production tools and content delivery systems.
  6. Measure the viewer experience. On the actual chain, measure glass-to-glass latency, startup delay, stalls or rebuffering, and bitrate adaptation. Compare results across representative network conditions; the specifications do not promise a universal latency from any one segment setting.

How to choose between shorter segments and LL-HLS

Approach Media published What to check Main trade-off
Ordinary HLS Complete media segments; Apple’s baseline recommendation is nominal six-second segments. EXTINF accuracy, TARGETDURATION, decodable boundaries, aligned audio/video playlists. Changing segment duration alone may not materially reduce end-to-end latency; more frequent segments can increase request and update frequency.
LL-HLS Partial segments can be published before the complete parent segment. Part target relative to client P95 RTT, hold-back, playlist publication, and end-to-end support from tools, delivery, and player. Requires compatible infrastructure and client behavior; very short parts must still accommodate network delay and playback buffering.
LL-DASH Low-latency chunk delivery can decouple latency from the duration of the larger media segment. Whether the chosen encoder, delivery chain, and player support the required chunking behavior. Operational and ecosystem trade-offs differ by deployment; neither LL-DASH nor LL-HLS is universally better.

RFC 9317 describes an operational distinction: an LL-HLS client retrieves each chunk with a separate HTTP GET, while LL-DASH can use chunked transfer encoding to fetch chunks belonging to a segment with one GET. The suitable approach depends on ecosystem support and operational needs, not just the nominal segment duration.

Troubleshoot latency or playback problems after a change

  • Latency barely changes: Complete segments may not be the bottleneck. Check playlist update cadence, origin and CDN/cache delivery, player live-edge and hold-back behavior, and whether the client is using the intended low-latency mode.
  • Stalls begin after shortening segments: Inspect EXTINF accuracy against actual media, verify target-duration constraints, and check that each boundary supports decoding. Restore a valid target if the playlist declarations and media no longer agree.
  • Audio and video fall out of sync: Compare their target durations, playlist coverage, and segment timing; Apple requires the audio and video playlists to use the same target duration and cover the same content duration.
  • LL-HLS parts arrive but playback buffers: Compare Part Target Duration with client P95 RTT and check that PART-HOLD-BACK is at least three times the part target. Also verify delivery and player support rather than reducing parts further by default.
  • Some viewers see different results: Test across the actual client and network mix. RTT, cache behavior, and player support vary, so a setting that works on one route may not behave the same for every viewer.
