To reduce lag in OBS Studio, first identify where it happens: in OBS’s preview or recording, in the live stream with dropped frames, or only in viewers’ playback. These point to different causes. Choppy OBS output or an encoding-overload warning usually calls for freeing GPU capacity and reducing OBS workload; a rising dropped-frames counter calls for network troubleshooting. Lowering bitrate will not fix a GPU bottleneck, and changing GPU settings will not fix an unstable connection.
Identify which kind of lag you have
Check OBS’s performance and connection status while the problem occurs. Note whether the preview or recording stutters, whether OBS reports rendering or encoding trouble, whether the dropped-frames counter rises, and whether the issue is limited to viewers’ playback.
| What you notice | What to check in OBS | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Preview or recording is choppy, or OBS reports encoding overload | Rendering or encoding warnings and overall performance | Free GPU capacity, then reduce video and scene workload. |
| The live stream loses frames | Dropped-frames counter and connection status | Check bitrate, server, and network stability. |
| Some viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames | Confirm the dropped-frames counter is not rising | Consider viewer connections, stream bitrate, and platform transcoding. |
OBS explains that its compositing and rendering require GPU resources, so a game can appear smooth while OBS still struggles to render scenes. OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; that is a separate problem from rendering or encoding performance.
Fix choppy preview, recording, or encoding overload
Free GPU capacity first
Close other GPU-heavy programs. If you are capturing a game, cap its frame rate to the monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync. If OBS still cannot keep up, lower the game’s graphics settings so the GPU has capacity to render OBS scenes as well.

On Windows, try launching OBS with Run as administrator. OBS recommends this as an early troubleshooting step because Windows may then reserve some GPU capacity for OBS. It can resolve GPU overload, but it is not a guarantee and this advice is specific to Windows.
Lower output resolution or frame rate
In Settings → Video, reduce the output resolution and test again. If 60 fps is not stable, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. Frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance. Change one setting at a time and compare results: a lower resolution reduces detail, while a lower frame rate makes motion less smooth.

Simplify scenes and sources
Sources use resources, and some may continue doing so even when they are not visible. Temporarily disable sources, filters, and animated overlays to find what is costly, then keep only what the scene needs. Apply filters to the smallest appropriate source, or deactivate a filtered source when it is not in use. Where the final image does not need the detail, use lower-resolution capture or media.
Browser sources can be resource-intensive. Reduce their number and dimensions; use image sources for static graphics and media or VLC sources for video or audio files where appropriate. If a scene collection has accumulated unused scenes, split it into smaller, focused collections.

Change the base canvas only as a last resort
Reducing base (canvas) resolution can complicate source positioning and asset management, so OBS does not generally recommend it as the first fix. If the system remains starved for GPU resources after other changes, create a new scene collection, switch to it, change the canvas resolution, and reposition or resize its sources.
Fix dropped frames in the stream
If OBS’s dropped-frames counter rises, treat the issue as a connection problem rather than a rendering bottleneck.

- In Settings → Stream, try a different server.
- In Settings → Output, lower Video Bitrate to a level your stable upload capacity can sustain and that the streaming platform permits. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee: upload capacity can vary, and platform limits still apply. Check the platform’s current recommendations.
- Check for VPNs, security software, bundled network-prioritization utilities, and outdated network drivers that may interfere with streaming.
- If you are on Wi-Fi and suspect instability, test with a wired connection.
- Keep Bind to IP at Default. On Windows, check network optimization settings and TCP pacing. You can compare with IPv4-only as a troubleshooting test; if it does not help, restore the IPv4/IPv6 default.
- If the problem continues, contact your internet service provider with details about when the drops occur and what you have already tested.
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can reduce bitrate during congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and lowers video quality while it adapts.
When viewers buffer but OBS looks healthy
If the dropped-frames counter is not rising, viewers’ buffering does not by itself show that your OBS connection is failing. Viewers differ in device, location, and network quality. The stream’s bitrate and whether the platform offers transcoding—the ability to provide viewers with different playback quality options—also affect playback.
Best Value
- 【4K HDMI Input, 2K@30Hz Recording】Powered by a true USB 3.0 high-speed interface, the capture card supports up to 4K@30Hz HDMI input and records at 2K@30Hz or 1080P@60Hz. - 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
If buffering affects viewers and reach matters more than maximum output quality, consider lowering the bitrate or stream quality and follow the platform’s current recommendations. A lower bitrate may make playback more accessible, but it reduces the quality you send.
