To reduce input lag on Linux, first find which part of the input-to-screen path is responsible; there is no universal Wayland or X.Org setting that fixes it. Identify your session, compositor, input driver, and affected application, then adjust a control documented for that component and compare one change at a time under the same workload.
How do I reduce input lag on Linux?
Input delay is a chain, not a single switch. A device produces events; the kernel delivers them; an input stack and display server or compositor route them; the application updates and renders; and the compositor and display present the result. Delay or a feeling of sluggishness can arise at different stages. The documentation describes these stages but does not establish a universal latency budget or a guaranteed fix.
- Identify the session and application path. Determine whether your desktop session is Wayland or X.Org, which compositor is active, and whether the application is a native Wayland client, an X11 client running through XWayland, or an X.Org client. The path can differ between applications in the same session.
- Identify the input component. Check which driver handles the device and whether the compositor or X.Org uses libinput for it. libinput is common in both environments, but it is not the display server and is not mandatory in every configuration. The libinput overview describes its role in handling input devices.
- Use the active component’s supported controls. On Wayland, look in the desktop or compositor’s own settings and documentation. On X.Org, check the relevant input driver and its supported configuration tools. Do not assume that a libinput option can be configured the same way through every compositor or driver.
- Change one thing and compare. Keep the application, display mode, workload, and other conditions as consistent as practical. Record the original setting, the symptom, and the result; revert the change if it does not help or creates new problems.
- Follow the symptom to its likely stage. If lag appears only in one application or under load, investigate that application’s rendering and the compositor or server workload before changing unrelated kernel parameters or replacing hardware.
The official documentation reviewed here does not prescribe one end-to-end measurement tool or a universal test procedure for every Linux setup. A repeatable comparison on your own system is more useful than assuming a tweak works everywhere.
Is Wayland or X.Org faster for gaming?
There is no evidence here for a categorical winner. The architectures differ, but that fact alone does not establish which will deliver lower input-to-screen latency on a particular machine, game, driver, compositor, and display configuration.

| Setup detail | What to check |
|---|---|
| Display session and client path | Compare native Wayland, X.Org, and XWayland paths where available; do not treat an X11 application on Wayland as a native Wayland client. |
| Compositor and presentation | Identify the active compositor and consult its documentation for frame scheduling and presentation controls. |
| Input handling | Find the driver and device settings actually used by the session; libinput is common, not universal. |
| Application and workload | Compare the same game or application under the same scene, load, display mode, and other relevant conditions. |
| Observed response | Use a consistent way to assess the change. A subjective impression of smoothness or tearing is not, by itself, an end-to-end latency measurement. |
Wayland’s documented model has the compositor receive input events, route them to the appropriate surface, and manage composition and display output. The documented general X flow routes events through the X server to clients, with rendering and, in some setups, a separate compositor also involved. The Wayland architecture description explains these flows. They are architectural context, not proof that each additional step causes a fixed or visible delay.
For X.Org, the project’s performance documentation notes that transport latency, round trips for some operations, and slow server-side paths can affect responsiveness. It also discusses tearing and the trade-offs of uncomposited drawing. Those points make workload and server behavior worth investigating; they do not show that every X.Org session is slower than Wayland. A display that looks smoother or tears less is not necessarily delivering lower measured input-to-photon latency.

How do I reduce mouse latency on Wayland?
Start with the desktop or compositor that owns your Wayland session, not with a generic X.Org configuration snippet. A Wayland compositor commonly uses libinput to handle mouse events, but libinput does not store configuration itself. The caller chooses which options to expose and apply, so available controls depend on the compositor and desktop version.
- Check the desktop’s mouse or pointing-device settings and the compositor’s documentation for supported options.
- Confirm whether the problem affects all applications or only an XWayland or native Wayland application.
- If it is application-specific, investigate that client’s rendering and presentation path rather than changing device settings without evidence.
- Make and evaluate one supported change at a time, preserving a way to restore the original setting.
The libinput FAQ explains that configuration is handled by the component using libinput; it does not offer one universal configuration interface for all Wayland compositors.

Where do I change libinput settings?
It depends on which component uses libinput. The libinput overview describes libinput as an input stack for applications that handle devices such as mice, keyboards, touchpads, touchscreens, and tablets. In a typical Wayland setup the compositor uses it; in a typical X.Org setup it may be used through the xf86-input-libinput driver. Neither arrangement is required in every possible configuration, and Wayland or X clients do not use libinput directly.
| Session path | Where to look | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Wayland | The desktop or compositor’s supported settings and documentation. | The compositor decides which libinput options are exposed; do not assume a setting is available or uses the same interface elsewhere. |
| X.Org using xf86-input-libinput | The driver’s documentation and the distribution’s supported X.Org configuration tools; the libinput FAQ describes xorg.conf.d snippets and runtime tools as common paths. | Confirm that this is the driver actually handling the device. Configuration details vary by distribution, driver, and version. |
libinput itself does not retain settings for the next session or provide a configuration interface that overrides its caller. Consult documentation for the software actually running your session before applying a setting.

Should I change a compositor delay setting?
Only if your compositor documents such a control and you understand its trade-offs. For example, Canonical’s Mir compositor configuration reference documents composite-delay: Mir waits for new client frames before compositing, and higher values increase latency while potentially risking skipped frames. The reference gives a default of zero. This is a Mir-specific example, not a setting or default to copy to Mutter, KWin, wlroots-based compositors, or other desktop environments; the reference is labeled development documentation and may change.
What if the lag happens only under load?
Look for a bottleneck in the part of the path that changes with the workload. The application may be slow to update or render; the compositor or X server may be doing more work; or the system may be struggling to deliver frames consistently. For X.Org, the project’s performance notes specifically identify transport round trips and slow server-side paths, including software rendering paths, as possible responsiveness concerns. This is a reason to investigate the actual workload, not to assume that a display server is always at fault.
