To reduce HTML-to-PDF conversion time, first time HTML preparation, page loading and readiness waits, PDF rendering, and output handling separately. Then optimize the stage that actually dominates. Large CSS workloads and multi-page tables are documented concerns in WeasyPrint; font and image waits may matter in browser-based workflows, but smaller assets or shorter waits are not automatically faster or safe. There is no documented universal fastest renderer or guaranteed speed improvement.

Find the slow stage before changing the renderer

Total job time combines several different tasks. A slow result might come from building the HTML, fetching remote assets, waiting for application content, laying out and rendering pages, or writing and transferring the PDF. Changing PDF options will not fix a slow database query or a readiness wait.

Time each stage independently

  • HTML and data preparation: Measure template rendering, database calls, serialization, and any work that happens before the browser receives the document.
  • Navigation and resources: Measure page navigation and the loading of stylesheets, fonts, images, and scripts. Record whether assets are local, cached, or fetched over a network.
  • Readiness: Measure explicit waits for selectors, fonts, network activity, or application-specific completion signals. Identify the exact condition rather than treating all waiting as one cost.
  • PDF rendering: Time the call that creates the PDF separately from navigation. Puppeteer’s example uses separate awaited navigation and page.pdf() operations, and its guide notes that PDF generation waits for fonts by default. Puppeteer issue report
  • Output handling: Separate saving, uploading, and returning the file from the renderer’s work. A slow network destination can make the whole job appear slow.

Build a representative, repeatable test

Choose sample documents that reflect production: a short document, a long one, typical page counts, tables, images, fonts, and dynamic content. Record the renderer and library version, machine or container, concurrency, and whether each run is cold or warm. Keep output requirements and input data constant. Run each case repeatedly and compare medians and tail latency rather than relying on one run.

Change one factor at a time, and compare both elapsed time and PDF correctness. Check page count, page breaks, text, images, fonts, and any required print styling. A faster PDF that omits content is not an optimization.

Reduce the work the renderer has to do

Trim CSS and DOM complexity when rendering is the bottleneck

WeasyPrint documents that a high number of CSS properties combined with many HTML tags can make the CSS cascade take substantial time. Its guidance recommends avoiding large CSS frameworks when possible. If WeasyPrint’s render stage dominates, test a smaller print stylesheet and remove unused framework styles or unnecessary markup. Validate layout after each change; simplifying CSS can alter the appearance or pagination.

This is renderer-specific guidance. Do not assume the same change produces the same gain in Chromium, or that CSS is the cause until timings show that rendering—not loading or waiting—is slow.

Investigate long, table-heavy documents

WeasyPrint 67.0 documentation says, “Tables are known to be slow, especially when they are rendered on multiple pages.” It also notes that common block layout can render much faster when it is an acceptable design substitute. WeasyPrint 67.0 performance guidance

If a large table spans many pages, test whether the same information can use a simpler block-based layout. That is a design trade-off, not a universal rule: tables may be necessary for aligned data, and this WeasyPrint advice does not establish that tables are slow in every PDF engine.

Check page count and expensive asset work

More pages and more complex content can mean more layout and output work, but measure the real document rather than infer the cause from its size alone. Inspect large images, font processing, and any image transformations performed during generation. Image and font optimization can reduce PDF size while increasing rendering time, according to WeasyPrint’s documentation; a smaller output file therefore does not prove a faster conversion. Reuse assets across WeasyPrint batch jobs

When multiple documents reuse the same images, WeasyPrint supports a shared image cache. Reusing it can avoid repeatedly downloading, parsing, and optimizing the same assets, reducing network and CPU work across a batch. This is most relevant when repeated image processing is measured as a bottleneck; it is not a general speed switch for one isolated document.

The cache has a memory trade-off if retained in a long-lived process. WeasyPrint also documents a disk cache folder, which may suit workloads where keeping all cached material in memory is undesirable. Choose and test the cache strategy against the batch size, asset reuse, and available memory. WeasyPrint caching documentation

Use browser PDF options for their intended purpose

Puppeteer: preserve font readiness unless output checks support changing it

Puppeteer’s current PDF options list waitForFonts as true by default. Its PDF guide says Page.pdf() waits for fonts by default. Disabling that behavior may change what the PDF contains or how text is laid out; do so only after proving fonts are ready by another reliable means and checking the resulting output. Other documented controls include page ranges, output path, print backgrounds, scale, and timeout. These change what is rendered or how it is saved; the documentation does not establish them as performance improvements. Use them to meet output requirements, then measure. Puppeteer PDFOptions reference

Playwright: test the required media mode

Playwright documents that page.pdf() uses print CSS media by default and supports options such as page ranges and headers and footers. Print and screen presentation can differ, so benchmark the mode the product actually needs and inspect its output. The documentation does not quantify a speed gain from choosing one media type over another. Playwright page.pdf() reference

Chrome Headless CLI: timing controls do not guarantee completeness

Chrome’s headless command-line options include --print-to-pdf, --timeout, and --virtual-time-budget. The timeout sets a maximum wait before capture, even if the page is still loading. Virtual time advances time-dependent JavaScript as quickly as possible while making the page behave as if time passed. Neither option establishes that external resources or application data have finished loading. Check the captured PDF for complete text, images, fonts, and dynamic content before adopting a shorter or accelerated capture. Chrome Headless documentation

Separate readiness waits from useful work

A wait can dominate a job, but shortening it blindly risks capturing an incomplete page. Determine what the code is waiting for: a fixed delay, a selector, network idleness, font readiness, or a product-specific signal. Replace a broad wait only when a narrower condition reliably indicates that the content needed for the PDF is ready.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For dynamic pages, verify the readiness signal against slow and fast responses, missing assets, and content that appears after initial navigation. Check the final document for expected text, images, and fonts. A navigation event alone may not mean that application data or every external resource is ready.

Compare engines with the same workload

The available official materials do not establish an apples-to-apples performance ranking across Puppeteer/Chromium, Playwright, WeasyPrint, and Chrome’s CLI. WeasyPrint notes that its performance generally improves over time and points to version comparisons, but that is not evidence of a universal cross-engine winner. Pin versions and benchmark candidates with identical representative input and output requirements.

Comparison axis What to verify
Latency and throughput Measure single-job time and batch throughput at the concurrency you expect.
Memory and concurrency Track peak memory and behavior under simultaneous jobs, including any in-process asset cache.
Print fidelity Compare print CSS, pagination, page breaks, headers, footers, fonts, and image rendering.
Asset handling Check font and image behavior, remote resource loading, and whether repeated assets can be reused.
Output requirements Confirm accessibility and other PDF requirements that matter to your application.
Deployment fit Include operational costs and constraints of running the chosen renderer in your environment.

Change engines only when a like-for-like test shows a worthwhile result and the candidate meets fidelity and deployment requirements. A faster renderer that breaks print CSS or requires unsuitable infrastructure may not reduce the actual cost of delivering PDFs.

Troubleshoot common slow conversions

  • PDF generation takes longer than navigation: The renderer may be doing substantial layout work. Inspect DOM size, CSS volume, page count, and multi-page tables; test one simplification at a time.
  • Navigation or readiness dominates: Identify the exact wait and the slow resources or application signals involved. Do not reduce the wait until a reliable readiness check and output validation are in place.
  • Repeated batch jobs are slow despite identical images: If using WeasyPrint, measure the benefit of its shared image cache and monitor memory. Consider its documented disk cache option if an in-memory cache is unsuitable.
  • PDF files get smaller but jobs get slower: Image or font optimization may be spending more time to reduce output size. Decide whether file size or conversion latency is the priority and measure both.
  • Shorter CLI timeout produces missing content: The page may still be loading when capture begins. A timeout is a maximum wait, not a readiness guarantee; use a reliable prepared page and validate the PDF.
  • Changing PDF options has no effect on job time: The measured bottleneck may be HTML preparation, resource loading, or output transfer rather than rendering. Keep the stage timings and optimize the dominant part.
  • One long PDF is slow, but small PDFs are not: Compare page count, table layout, asset volume, and dynamic content in otherwise similar samples. Avoid extrapolating from anecdotal timings to a general engine limit.

An individual Puppeteer issue report asked whether fonts, images, or other factors could slow a 50–60 page PDF. It concerned Puppeteer 13.0.1, Node.js 14.16.0, and Linux, and was opened on 2022-01-13; it is useful as an example of the troubleshooting question, not evidence of typical conversion times or a confirmed cause. Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a website page rather than operate your own HTML-to-PDF renderer, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from a GET request. This does not replace a custom HTML-to-PDF pipeline when you need to generate PDFs from your own HTML or control a renderer’s full workflow.

Example cURL request for a PDF: curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -d format=pdf -o page.pdf

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
