A gaming mini PC’s fan usually gets louder because a demanding game raises CPU or GPU heat, so the cooling system has to move more air. Start by checking what is using resources and whether the vents are clear; clean carefully, then try only fan or power modes documented for your exact model. Persistent full-speed operation or grinding, squealing, ticking, knocking, or rattling can point to a fault that needs service.
Why a gaming mini PC gets hot or loud
During a demanding game, the processor and graphics hardware produce more heat. The fan speeds up to carry heat away through the heatsink, and rushing-air noise can be normal. ASUS includes MiniPCs in its overheating and fan troubleshooting guidance.
Noise that stays high at idle, appears suddenly, or comes with abnormal mechanical sounds deserves a check. Common causes include a resource-heavy background process, blocked vents, dust, poor placement, or a worn or damaged fan. A single noise level or temperature cannot diagnose every mini PC: cooling designs and documented limits vary by model.
Check whether the fan is responding to a workload
If the noise starts during a game
Some fan acceleration under load is expected. Compare behavior in the same game and scene rather than judging the fan from a quiet desktop idle. If the PC remains stable and the sound is smooth airflow, first check airflow and consider a supported quieter mode rather than forcing the fan to run slowly.

If the fan is loud at idle
- Open Task Manager and sort processes by CPU use.
- Identify whether a known application or update is keeping the CPU busy. Close it only if you know it is safe to do so; investigate an unfamiliar process before taking action.
- Check whether fan speed settles after the workload ends. Intel notes that high CPU utilization can cause excessive heat and make the system fan run at 100% in its Intel NUC fan troubleshooting guidance.
Do not assume every high fan speed means a software problem: blocked airflow, dust, or a mechanical issue can produce similar symptoms.
Restore clear airflow around the mini PC
- Use the model’s manual or chassis markings to identify the intake and exhaust vents; do not assume every opening serves the same purpose.
- Move the PC away from walls, cloth, papers, and other objects that cover or crowd those openings.
- Set it on a firm, flat surface and leave open space around the vents. Follow the device manual for required clearance.
ASUS says not to block ventilation holes and to maintain distance around vents to prevent poor heat dissipation and overheating in its support guidance. Intel likewise recommends a well-ventilated area in its NUC over-temperature guidance. ASUS lists 5–35°C (41–95°F) as an ambient operating range in its general guidance; that is ASUS guidance, not a universal mini-PC specification, so the manual for your model takes precedence.

Clean dust cautiously
- Shut down the computer and disconnect its power before cleaning.
- For exterior vents, use a commercially available can of compressed air cautiously, holding it at a distance and not inverting it while in use, as ASUS advises.
- Do not use a powerful air compressor. Excessive pressure can damage fan blades.
- If dust is deep inside, or the manual does not permit opening the chassis, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repairer instead of disassembling it.
Intel’s advice to check for obstructions, clean radiators with compressed air, and inspect for physical damage is for Intel NUC systems; follow the instructions for your own model rather than treating it as general permission to open any mini PC. ASUS’s cleaning guidance also recommends service when internal dust is excessive.
Try only a fan or power mode supported for your model
Some mini PCs provide a vendor utility or BIOS setting for Quiet, Balanced, Cool, or another power or fan mode. Names, options, and menu paths vary, so consult the exact model’s manual or support page before changing anything. Change one supported setting at a time, then compare the same workload on four points:

- Noise during the game or other repeatable workload.
- CPU and GPU temperatures, using the manufacturer-supported monitoring method where available.
- Game performance and any signs of throttling or instability.
- Whether the setting is officially documented for that exact model.
A quieter mode may trade performance or temperature headroom for less noise; a lower fan speed is not automatically a better result if the game throttles or the system overheats. Do not disable thermal protections or impose a fixed low fan speed as a general fix.
Intel recommends trying Balanced and Cool modes for the specific over-temperature warning documented for Intel NUC systems. ASUS’s Visual BIOS instructions cover Intel NUC generations 5–8: they describe Cool as cooler but slightly louder and show Quiet, Balanced, and Cool examples. These are model- and generation-specific examples, not universal options. ASUS also warns that manual fan control does not override the selected duty cycle, leaving the user responsible for avoiding overheating. Recognize noise that may indicate a fan fault
Smooth rushing-air noise differs from grinding, squealing, ticking, knocking, or loud rattling. Intel identifies these as noisy-fan symptoms in its Intel NUC noisy-fan guidance, which recommends checking for obstructions, cleaning radiators, and looking for physical damage.
- Check externally for an object or dust obstructing an opening, without reaching into a running fan.
- If the fan does not run, appears damaged, or continues making abnormal noise after safe external checks, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repairer.
- Seek support if over-temperature warnings persist after airflow is restored and supported settings are returned to their documented defaults.
Do not order a generic replacement fan or attempt internal thermal work based only on the PC’s size or brand. Compatibility and safe repair depend on the exact model and part number; warranty terms may also matter.

What noise measurements can—and cannot—tell you
GIGABYTE’s 2022 product material for the GB-BEi7-1260 BRIX (Rev. 1.0) lists 20 dB in standby and just under 40 dB at 100% CPU load. Those are manufacturer-published figures for that particular model, not independent comparative tests or a benchmark for gaming mini PCs generally. They do not establish what another model should sound like.
