The reliable way to cut the electricity cost of a 24/7 YouTube stream is to measure the whole setup at the wall, reduce work and equipment the stream does not need, then measure again. Calculate your energy cost from actual kilowatt-hours (kWh) and your household’s applicable electricity rate—not the PC’s power-supply rating or a supposed all-India average. Keep the stream stable and check picture quality after each change.
Calculate what your 24/7 stream costs
Measure the complete setup while it is operating normally. Multiply its average power in kilowatts by the hours it runs and the applicable energy rate in rupees per kWh. If your meter records accumulated kWh, multiply that reading by the applicable rate instead.
Energy-cost estimate = average kW × operating hours × applicable ₹/kWh

Use wall-side readings, not component labels
Include the PC, monitors, capture equipment, audio gear and any other equipment connected to the same meter. A plug-in electricity meter that tracks kWh can help measure plug-connected devices; check that its rating and connection method suit the equipment. The meter measures energy but does not save it by itself.
A PSU’s rated capacity, a GPU’s TDP or another component’s advertised figure does not tell you the whole setup’s actual wall consumption while streaming. Record kWh over a representative period that captures normal variation, and note what was running during the measurement.

Apply your own current tariff
Check the latest bill and tariff schedule for your state, DISCOM and domestic consumer category. Confirm the applicable slab, energy charge, fuel or power-purchase adjustments, duty and any subsidy. The Ministry of Power says state electricity regulatory commissions determine retail tariffs, and state governments may provide subsidies to domestic consumers (Ministry of Power release, 10 August 2026).

Reduce consumption without sacrificing the stream
Change one thing at a time, then compare wall-side kWh over comparable operating periods. During and after each change, check that the stream remains stable and that its picture and audio still meet your needs.
- Measure the baseline. Record whole-setup kWh during representative streaming, including all equipment that will remain on. Note the scene, resolution, frame rate and encoder settings so you can compare like with like.
- Remove unnecessary workload. If the PC is also rendering a game, video or animated scene, try a less demanding scene, frame rate or resolution that still suits your stream. Confirm the result looks acceptable and stays stable; the right setting depends on your content and hardware.
- Compare encoder options. Test the hardware encoder available on your PC if it provides the quality and reliability you need. It is not guaranteed to use less electricity: GPU draw, encoder implementation and workload can change total system consumption. Compare measured whole-system kWh rather than assuming.
- Switch off equipment you do not need. Turn off unused monitors, lights and peripherals. If you need a monitor only to start or check the stream, test whether it can be turned off once the stream is stable. Do not enable sleep or hibernation if it would interrupt streaming.
- Consider hardware changes only after measuring. A lower-power PC, GPU or PSU may reduce draw in some configurations, but replacement cost, workload compatibility and system efficiency matter. Establish your current consumption and encoding requirements before deciding whether an upgrade makes financial sense.
- Measure again and check the bill. Compare kWh for similar operating periods after each change, while checking stream quality and uptime. Use the applicable marginal energy rate to estimate the energy-charge reduction; fixed charges may not fall when kWh use does.
When does a hardware change pay off?
Compare options using four practical factors: measured kWh reduction, stream quality, reliability and upfront cost. To estimate a simple payback period, divide the purchase cost by the expected monthly energy-cost reduction—but base that reduction on comparable measurements and your household’s applicable marginal rate. This is only an estimate: tariff changes, differing workloads and fixed charges can affect the result.
