To reduce the data your church uses to send a continuous YouTube sermon stream, lower the encoder’s outgoing resolution and bitrate, then test the result for picture clarity and stream stability. Start by comparing 480p30 with 720p30. Viewers can separately choose YouTube’s Data saver setting on Android to reduce playback quality on their own connections.
Reduce the church’s outgoing data at the encoder
The church’s encoder sends a feed to YouTube. At a steady bitrate, a lower bitrate sends fewer bits over time; lowering resolution can make a lower bitrate look better. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations for the incoming live feed are:

These figures are YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendations, not guarantees of acceptable picture quality or uninterrupted streaming. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. Check the encoder’s own documentation for where to change resolution, frame rate, bitrate and rate control; the exact controls vary by software or device. - Make a controlled test using the church’s normal camera framing, representative sermon audio and typical movement.
- Compare 480p30 and 720p30. Check that faces, gestures, the pulpit, and any displayed scripture or lyrics remain legible on a phone and on the larger screens your congregation uses.
- For each setting, monitor YouTube’s stream health and check the event on a mobile device. Keep the lowest setting that remains usable and stable for your needs.
A mostly fixed camera may work at a lower frame rate than fast-moving content, but there is no single official setting for every church. Fine text and the viewing screen size matter: a setting that looks clear on a monitor may not make lyrics readable on a phone. Estimate the stream’s outgoing data use
For a steady bitrate, estimate payload with: bitrate in bits per second × seconds ÷ 8. The figures below use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). They are calculations for the stream payload, not measured network totals or a bill forecast.

For context, a continuous 14 Mbps feed—the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30 in YouTube’s guidance—works out to about 151.2 GB of payload per day using the same calculation. Actual network usage can be higher because of protocol overhead, reconnects, other traffic or a backup encoder. If you have a backup feed, include its bitrate in your bandwidth and data planning.

Leave upload headroom and monitor the connection
YouTube advises having about 20% more upload bandwidth than the combined bitrate of the primary and backup feeds. Measure outbound upload capacity rather than relying on download speed, test before the broadcast, and watch stream health during operation. For an always-on stream, change settings in a controlled test and observe them over a representative period. Check actual usage through the router or internet service account before treating the bitrate calculation as a data allowance or bill estimate.
Help viewers use less mobile data
The church’s encoder bitrate is not an exact measure of the data any individual viewer will consume. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into multiple playback formats, and the rendition a viewer receives can depend on their settings and viewing conditions. Their total use also depends on how long they watch.

Set Data saver on Android
- In the YouTube Android app, tap the profile picture.
- Open Settings, then Video quality preferences.
- Choose Data saver for mobile networks. YouTube describes it as lower picture quality; higher picture quality uses more data.
While watching, viewers can also use the player’s Quality menu to change playback quality. Menu names and options can vary by device and app version. See YouTube’s Android video quality instructions.
Settings that do not directly reduce the encoder’s bitrate
YouTube’s live settings include DVR, which lets viewers pause and rewind. Lower latency can mean more playback buffering. These options affect viewing behavior or latency; YouTube’s guidance does not identify them as controls for reducing the church’s outgoing bitrate. Keep them separate from encoder changes. Troubleshoot common data and stream problems
- Data use remains higher than the estimate: The calculation covers the stated stream payload only. Check for a backup feed, reconnects and other network traffic, and compare with router or service-level usage.
- The stream becomes unstable after lowering the bitrate: Check outbound capacity and stream health, then test again with adequate upload headroom. Do not treat YouTube’s minimum bitrate as a guarantee of stability.
- Scripture or lyrics are hard to read: Recheck the actual camera framing and displayed text at the lower resolution on a phone and a congregation-sized screen. If details are not legible, test a higher resolution such as 720p30.
- A viewer still uses substantial mobile data: Their playback rendition and watch time affect consumption. Ask them to select Data saver in Android settings or lower quality in the player.
