For a new eligible consumer purchase, redeem the unused key at Microsoft’s official setup page while signed in to the personal Microsoft account that should own the license. After redemption, install or reinstall Office from that account’s Services & subscriptions page. The key is normally used once; later setup and activation use the account, not another key-entry attempt.
This distinction solves the most common error: an already used key usually means redemption already succeeded. It does not mean you should keep entering the same code.
Understand redemption versus installation
A product key is a 25-character code supplied with some consumer Office and Microsoft 365 purchases. Redemption is the one-time claim process that attaches the license to a Microsoft account. Installation downloads the desktop applications to a computer, and activation confirms the installed apps can be used under that account.

Those are related but separate events. You can redeem a key today, install the software later, remove it and reinstall it, or set it up on another supported computer without entering the original key again. The account used during redemption is the record Microsoft uses for those later actions.

Microsoft’s consumer instructions cover Microsoft 365 for home and Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019 and Office 2016. Microsoft states that support has ended for Office 2021, Office 2019 and Office 2016, so check the product’s current lifecycle and system requirements before relying on an older edition.
Identify your license and key state first
The correct route depends on both the type of license and whether the code is unused. Use this table before opening a setup page.

A personal consumer key should not be attached to a work or school account unless the purchase instructions explicitly require that. If you are uncertain which account owns an existing license, try the personal Microsoft accounts you may have used and inspect Services & subscriptions; do not create multiple redemptions while guessing.
Prepare before entering the key
Have the key, an internet connection and the intended Microsoft account ready. A physical package may contain the code on a card; a digital purchase may display it in the seller’s order information. Keep the code private while you work.
- Identify whether the purchase is Microsoft 365 or a one-time Office edition.
- Check the country or region for which the code was sold.
- Decide which personal Microsoft account should permanently own the license.
- Keep the receipt, order number and seller details in case the key is rejected.
- Make sure you can sign in to the account and recover it if Microsoft requests verification.
If this is a Microsoft 365 renewal, do not choose a random new account. Microsoft directs renewals to the account already associated with the subscription. Using another account can leave the renewal and the existing subscription separated.
Redeem a new consumer Office key
- Confirm the edition and region. Determine whether the purchase is Microsoft 365 or a one-time Office edition, and verify that the key is intended for your country or region. Region eligibility can prevent a valid-looking code from being accepted.
- Open Microsoft’s setup page directly. Enter office.com/setup or microsoft365.com/setup in the browser address bar. Use the Microsoft domain, not a page supplied by an unrelated site that asks you to submit the code. Redirects between Microsoft’s setup addresses can occur; check that the destination remains on a Microsoft domain.
- Sign in to the owning account. Select the sign-in option and use the personal Microsoft account that should remain associated with the license. If you do not have one, create an account during the process and record the sign-in details securely.
- Enter the key when prompted. Type the code exactly as printed. Microsoft says to enter it without hyphens if the page requests that format. If no key-entry box appears, the code may have been entered automatically; continue rather than trying to force a second redemption.
- Finish the on-screen redemption. Review the product and account shown, accept the prompts and wait for confirmation. This is the point at which Microsoft links the license to the account. Save a note of the account address and product name for future installations.
Do not close the browser as soon as the code is accepted. Let the confirmation complete, then open the account’s subscription page to verify that the Office product is listed. The listing, rather than the original code, is your practical reference for later setup.
What the confirmation means
A successful redemption does not necessarily install Word, Excel or the other desktop apps immediately. It records the entitlement against the Microsoft account. You may see a button to continue to installation, but you can also leave and return later through Services & subscriptions.

Write down the account address, product name and edition shown after redemption. Do not assume that the email address used to buy a code from a retailer is the Microsoft account that now owns it. The decisive account is the one active when Microsoft accepted the key.
Install Office after redemption
Once the license is attached to your account, installation starts from the account rather than from the key page.

- Open the Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page and sign in with the account used for redemption.
- Locate the Office or Microsoft 365 product. Select its Install option and follow the download and setup screens shown for your product and operating system.
- Before running the installer, check Microsoft’s current system requirements for the edition and platform. The available screens, download options and supported features can differ between Windows and Mac and between subscription and one-time products.
- Allow the installer to finish, then open an Office application such as Word or Excel. If it requests activation, sign in with the account that owns the purchase.
- When setup completes, confirm that the expected product appears in the application’s account or subscription information. This confirms that the installed apps are using the redeemed license rather than an unrelated account.
If you uninstall Office or replace the computer, repeat the Services & subscriptions steps. A reinstallation is an account action; entering the original key again can trigger an “already used” message without solving anything.
Windows and Mac installation differences
Microsoft presents installation choices based on the product and the operating system detected or selected. Windows and Mac packages are not identical, and a Microsoft 365 subscription can show different options from a one-time Office license. Choose the installer for the computer you are actually using and read the current requirements before downloading.

If you use more than one computer, sign in to the account’s Services & subscriptions page on each supported device and follow the installation choices Microsoft provides for that license. Do not infer additional rights from the fact that an installer downloads; the account page and product terms determine which installation options are available.
What to do when the app asks for activation
Activation prompts after installation are usually resolved by signing in, not by looking for a new code. In the Office app, choose the sign-in or activation option and use the same Microsoft account that appears on the Services & subscriptions page for the product. Signing in with a different personal account can make Office appear unlicensed even when the purchase is valid.
If you redeemed the key under the wrong account, Microsoft’s normal consumer flow does not provide a second redemption of the same code. Check which account shows the product and continue with that account. For an organization-owned subscription, use the organization account and ask the administrator to correct the assignment if necessary.
Troubleshoot the most common key problems
“This product key has already been used”
Microsoft treats consumer keys as one-time redemption codes. The message generally indicates that redemption happened earlier, possibly during an earlier installation or by another person who had access to the code. Sign in to the Microsoft account used at that time and open Services & subscriptions. Select the listed Office product and install from there. If an application asks for activation, use that same account.
The key is rejected immediately
First check that you are entering the code for the product you bought and that the product is offered in your region. Then consider whether the code was already redeemed. A code for a different edition, country or region may not be interchangeable with the product or account you selected.
If the key came from an independent seller and still does not work, Microsoft advises contacting that seller for a refund. Microsoft warns that separately sold keys can be stolen, abused, counterfeit or otherwise unauthorized. A low price does not make an invalid code recoverable, and repeatedly submitting it will not change its licensing status.
The page shows a region or language error
Keys are not universally portable between countries. A purchase made for another country or region can fail when redeemed from your current location or with an account configured for a different market. Follow Microsoft’s region-specific troubleshooting guidance and verify that the purchase region, account region and current location are compatible. Do not assume that changing the display language is a reliable workaround; the restriction concerns eligibility, not merely the words shown on the page.

No key-entry box appears
Microsoft says the key may have been entered automatically. Sign in to the intended account and inspect Services & subscriptions. If the Office product is listed, proceed with installation there. Entering the code again is unnecessary and can only produce a duplicate-redemption error.

Sign out and retry with the account that was active during redemption. Check for spelling differences in the account address and avoid switching between personal and work identities in the same browser session. If no account shows the product, verify the redemption confirmation and purchase record before contacting Microsoft or the seller; a code that was never successfully redeemed will not create an account listing.
The installer is available but activation still fails
Open the installed app’s account information and sign out of any unrelated identity, then sign in with the owning account. Confirm that the product shown in Services & subscriptions matches the edition installed. If the license belongs to an organization, the administrator may need to assign it to your user account before desktop activation becomes available.
The setup page keeps returning to sign-in
Make sure the browser is not switching between a personal Microsoft account and a work or school identity. Sign out of unrelated Microsoft sessions, reopen the official setup address and sign in only with the account intended to own the consumer license. If the product was already redeemed, skip the key page and go directly to Services & subscriptions.
When the consumer instructions do not apply
Not every Office key follows the home-user process. Use the route that matches the purchase.

Do not use a consumer key to bypass an organization’s licensing controls. The account that pays for or administers a business license may not be the account that installs it on an employee’s computer.
Edition, support and compatibility checks
Office 2024 is a current one-time edition covered by Microsoft’s consumer redemption instructions. Office 2021, Office 2019 and Office 2016 are also covered for redemption, but Microsoft notes that support for those versions has ended. An old key can therefore redeem successfully while the edition has a different support position from a current release.
Separate three questions: will Microsoft accept the key, can the installer run on this operating system, and does the edition still receive support? A successful redemption answers only the first question. Check Microsoft’s current system requirements and lifecycle information before installing an older product, especially after a major operating-system change.

- Use only Microsoft’s official setup domain for redemption. The setup addresses are office.com/setup and microsoft365.com/setup.
- Never publish the code in a forum, screenshot or support request. Anyone who redeems an unused key first may attach it to their own account.
- Record the Microsoft account used, not just the code. The account is what you need for reinstallation after the one-time redemption.
- Be cautious with keys sold separately from legitimate product packaging or an authorized purchase. Microsoft specifically warns that such codes may be stolen, abused, counterfeit or unauthorized.
- Keep the purchase receipt and seller details until the product appears in Services & subscriptions and activates successfully.
A practical decision path
If the code is unused and you bought an eligible home product, redeem it once through Microsoft’s setup page while signed in to the intended personal account. If the code has already been accepted, stop entering it and use that account’s Services & subscriptions page. If the account does not show the product, investigate the original account, product edition and region before seeking help. If the purchase is tied to work, school, business, volume licensing or the Workplace Discount Program, switch to the organization or program instructions instead of forcing the consumer route.

Where do I enter my Office product key?
