Before sharing an open-source software failure log with an AI model, inspect and sanitize the entire review packet—not just the visible error excerpt. Remove credentials and sensitive information, keep only context needed to diagnose the failure, and check what files or terminal output the AI coding tool may also send.
What to remove or mask
Logs and debugging packets can contain much more than error messages. OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet advises that certain data should generally be removed, masked, sanitized, hashed, or encrypted instead of recorded directly.
- Credentials: passwords, access tokens, API keys, session values, private or encryption keys, and connection strings.
- Personal or financial data: sensitive personal identifiers and payment details.
- Project and infrastructure details: commercially sensitive information, internal hostnames or network details, and file paths that reveal more than the diagnosis requires.
Apply the same review to configuration snippets, surrounding terminal output, and any other material included with the error. A value may appear outside the lines that look like a conventional log.

Review the whole packet the AI tool can access
The material sent to an AI coding assistant may extend beyond what you paste into a prompt. OWASP notes that these tools may send code context, project structure, and terminal output to their provider. A repository’s .gitignore file does not stop an AI tool from reading files.

Check the tool’s context or file-exclusion controls where available, and inspect the material it proposes to use or send. Treat repository context as part of the review packet, not as automatically private just because it was not pasted into the chat.
A practical redaction workflow
- Assemble the likely packet. Include the failure excerpt, relevant surrounding terminal output, configuration, and repository context the assistant can read. Review that complete set rather than only the displayed error.
- Scan for sensitive values. Look for credentials, session identifiers, personal or payment data, internal hostnames, and revealing paths, as well as the other categories listed above.
- Remove what diagnosis does not need. If repeated values must be matched to understand the failure, replace them consistently with stable labels such as
[TOKEN_A]or a pseudonym. This preserves relationships between occurrences without exposing the original value. - Read the sanitized packet as plain text. Check that no sensitive value remains in nearby output, configuration, or context. Review the AI tool’s context controls as well.
- Share only the reduced packet. Keep enough information to reproduce or interpret the failure, but not unrelated project or personal details.
Can you trust automatic secret masking?
No. Automatic masking is a useful backstop, not proof that a packet is safe. GitHub’s guidance for Actions explains that masking can fail when a secret is transformed, applies only to secrets available to the current job’s runner, and can be less reliable for structured values. Those limitations concern GitHub Actions workflow logs; they should not be assumed to describe every CI provider or AI service.

Do not treat a clean Git status, .gitignore, or successful masking as a substitute for reviewing the actual output and the context the AI tool can access.

If an unredacted credential reached a GitHub Actions workflow log, GitHub’s guidance is to delete the affected log and rotate the credential. Treat rotation as necessary even if you later remove the log: deletion does not make an exposed credential safe to keep using.

For another CI system or model service, follow that provider’s current deletion and incident procedures. Retention, deletion, and privacy terms vary; there is no universal deletion guarantee established here. If other sensitive information was exposed, use the relevant organization or provider incident process.
