There is no universal button or guaranteed timeline for unsuspending a Venmo account: start with the notice Venmo sent, because a failed-payment freeze, an account review, and a sign-in verification problem require different steps. For a failed-payment freeze, use Venmo’s Restore your account prompt or go to venmo.com/recover. For other restrictions, follow Venmo’s request for information and contact Support if the reason or next step is unclear.

First, identify what is blocking your account

Check the message in the Venmo app and any notice from Venmo. The wording matters: a failed-payment freeze has a repayment flow, while a transfer review may involve identity checks or documents. If you cannot sign in because you cannot receive a verification code, that may be a login problem rather than an account suspension.

Venmo says transfer reviews can consider suspicious or illegal activity and whether account activity, including activity by people you transact with, complies with its User Agreement. A review may delay, block, or cancel transfers, freeze funds, or lead to account suspension or termination. That general explanation does not establish why a particular account was restricted; Venmo Support must clarify the reason for your case.

Recover an account frozen after a failed payment

  1. Open the recovery flow. Follow the prompts in the Venmo app and tap Restore your account, or use a computer browser to visit venmo.com/recover.
  2. Choose a repayment method and complete the steps. Venmo says debit-card repayment is the fastest option. A bank-funded payment may take up to five business days to process. If you cannot pay the full amount, Venmo’s recovery page says you can enter a partial payment.
  3. Wait for the recovery process to complete. Venmo says the account remains frozen until the full recovery is complete. Paying an amount does not resolve a separate identity or transfer review.

Complete identity verification if Venmo requests it

In the app, open Me > Settings gear > Identity Verification, then follow the prompts. Venmo says automated identity checks typically take a few minutes. If it cannot confirm your information automatically, it may ask for supporting documents through the app.

Prepare documents that meet Venmo’s requirements

Submit only the documents requested for your case, and check Venmo’s identity verification requirements for the current details. Venmo’s examples for confirming name and date of birth include a U.S. passport, driver’s license, U.S. government-issued ID, DHS card, or Tribal ID. Address examples include a bank, credit-card, or brokerage statement from the last 12 months; a recent utility bill; a recent W-2 or paystub; a lease from the last 12 months; current car registration; or a recent IRS letter.

  • Make sure the document is clear, legible, and unexpired.
  • Show the entire document, including all sides and corners.
  • Submit it through Venmo’s official in-app process or secure upload method, not by replying to an unsolicited text or email.

Venmo says document review can take up to three business days. Incomplete or unsuitable images may require resubmission, so the estimate is not a promise that your account will be restored within that period.

If the problem is a missing login code

If you no longer have access to the phone number that receives sign-in codes, use the login screen’s Other options or I don’t have access to this phone option, as described in Venmo’s new-device sign-in instructions. Protect your account during recovery

Venmo’s security guidance says, “Nobody at Venmo will ever contact you to request a password or verification code for your account.” Never give either to a caller, message sender, or person claiming to help restore access. Venmo says identity documents should be submitted through forms in the app, in-app chat, or its secure document upload form—not directly by text or email. Use the official app or Venmo website to start recovery rather than a link from an unexpected message.
