Try reopening the closed tab first, then check whether Firefox retained the entry in its form history. These options can sometimes recover text, but neither is a guaranteed backup: if the browser or website did not save an unsent draft, the text may be gone. Avoid clearing browser data while you try to recover it.

Try these recovery steps before changing anything

  1. Reopen a recently closed tab or window

In Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+T on Mac. Google documents this shortcut for reopening a closed tab or window. If the page returns, inspect the form before refreshing or navigating away. The shortcut restores the page, but it does not guarantee that text you had not submitted will return. Google Chrome Help: Manage tabs in Chrome.

  2. Check Firefox form suggestions

In Firefox, focus the field where you entered the text and type its first few letters. You can also focus an empty field and press the down-arrow to see whether Firefox offers a saved value. This may help with previously entered form text, but it is not a backup of every field or long response. Mozilla Support: Control whether Firefox automatically fills in forms.

  3. Do not clear browser data yet

Clearing browsing data can remove saved form entries. Wait until you have tried the relevant recovery options before deleting browser data. Google Chrome Help: Delete browsing data in Chrome.

  4. Look for a website draft or recovery prompt

If the site timed out or reset the page, check for a draft, a recovery prompt, or a way to return to the previous page state. Websites handle unsent text differently; there is no universal method that restores it. If neither the site nor the browser retained the text, recovery may not be possible.

Why recovery may fail

Reopening the page is not the same as restoring the form

A browser can reopen a tab without restoring the text typed into an unsent form. A page in browser history can help you find the site again, but it does not by itself retrieve what you typed.

Firefox form history has limits

Firefox can remember entries in web form fields and offer them again when form history is enabled and has not been cleared. A website can ask Firefox not to save form history, and extensions or security and privacy software may interfere. As a result, an entry may not be available even if you previously typed it. Mozilla Support explains Firefox’s form-filling controls.

How to prevent losing a long response

Keep a separate draft until submission succeeds

For important or lengthy text, write it in a notes app or text editor, then paste it into the form when it is ready. Keep the draft until the website confirms that the submission went through. This gives you a copy to return to if the page refreshes or the session expires.

Use a form-recovery extension only after reviewing its privacy implications

Some browser extensions advertise saving and restoring form data. For example, the Chrome Web Store listing for Form Recover describes local saving and restoration after a refresh, crash, or unexpected closure. Those are the publisher’s claims; the listing does not establish that the extension works on every site or that its performance has been independently tested. Form Recover in the Chrome Web Store.

Before installing any form-recovery extension, check which sites and fields it supports, what it saves or excludes, whether data stays on your device or is sent elsewhere, how long it is retained, and how to delete it. Review the requested permissions and the publisher’s privacy policy. Avoid using a recovery tool for passwords, payment details, or other sensitive information unless you clearly understand how it handles that data.
