Start by checking Google Photos and Google Drive from another device; a copy may already be backed up. If it is not, a direct USB transfer normally requires you to unlock the phone and select File transfer. When touch is broken but the display still works, a compatible OTG adapter and mouse may help. External-display options are limited to supported models. If you cannot operate or unlock the phone, there is no universal software method established for retrieving its local files.
First, check whether the files are already backed up
From a computer or another phone, sign in to the Google account used on the damaged device. Check Google Photos for backed-up photos and videos, and Google Drive for files. Also check other cloud accounts or computer copies you previously used.
These locations are not interchangeable: a photo may be in Photos while a document is in Drive, and a backup only helps if it was enabled and had finished syncing before the screen failed. Google notes that some apps cannot back up or restore all of their data, so check any app-specific storage or backup service relevant to the missing files.
If the display works and you can unlock the phone
Google’s standard Android-to-computer transfer requires the phone to be unlocked and its USB mode changed. Use a data-capable cable; some USB cables only charge.

- Connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable.
- Unlock the phone.
- Open the USB notification on the phone.
- Under “Use USB for,” select File transfer, as specified in Google Android Help.
- On the computer, open the phone’s storage and copy the photos and files you need.
This is an ordinary transfer workflow, not a way to bypass a lock. If the phone cannot be unlocked or you cannot reach the USB notification, move to the options below rather than assuming a cable alone will expose its files.
If touch does not work but the screen is visible
On compatible Galaxy phones, Samsung describes connecting a mouse through an OTG adapter to control the device. If the display still shows the interface, the mouse may let you enter your usual credential and then choose USB transfer or a backup destination. It does not unlock the phone by itself. - Check the exact phone model, port, and OTG compatibility before buying or connecting an adapter.
- A phrase to search for is USB OTG adapter for Android phone; connect a standard mouse to the adapter.
- This approach depends on the display remaining usable and the phone accepting the connected input device.
If neither the display nor touch input works
Some Galaxy models can show the phone interface on an external monitor when used with a compatible hub or DeX-capable setup, with a mouse or keyboard for input. This is model-specific: Samsung explicitly warns that not every phone supports HDMI output. Check the exact model’s support information before considering a USB-C HDMI hub or dock. Do not assume that a generic Android phone can output video over USB-C. If the exact model is unsupported, or the phone cannot be unlocked and operated, a qualified repair provider may need to restore enough screen function for normal access. A specialist recovery service may also be an option, but neither repair nor recovery can be guaranteed to preserve or retrieve the data.

Choose the route that matches the failure

Avoid steps that can destroy the only copy
Do not factory-reset the phone, wipe it, or unlock its bootloader as a photo-recovery step. Those actions can erase data or change the device state without solving the need to access encrypted local files. If the files are not backed up and ordinary access is impossible, get model-specific advice before authorizing work; ask the provider how it handles personal data and whether the proposed repair could affect stored files.
