To recover an OBS YouTube stream after a brief internet drop, enable OBS automatic reconnect before going live, then verify recovery in both OBS and YouTube Live Control Room. Reconnect can resume the stream when the connection returns, but it cannot fix a continuing ISP outage. Use OBS dropped-frame information and YouTube’s timestamped stream-health errors to identify what failed before changing settings.
Set up OBS automatic reconnect before the stream
- In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and make sure Automatically Reconnect is enabled. OBS documents reconnect configuration as an Advanced setting. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide and its Output API Reference explain reconnect behavior.
- Review the retry count and retry delay if your OBS version exposes them. The output retry count sets the maximum attempts; the wait starts at the configured duration and doubles after each retry. That backoff means retries are not unlimited or a guarantee of recovery. Allow a retry window appropriate to the short interruptions you expect, while remembering that the connection must return for OBS to reconnect.
- Before a scheduled stream, run a test with representative motion and audio. Choose a quality and bitrate your connection can reliably sustain, and monitor YouTube stream health. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. See its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
What to do when OBS keeps disconnecting
1. Let reconnect run, then check both OBS and YouTube
After the brief drop, give OBS time to make its configured attempts. Confirm that OBS shows an active transmission, then open YouTube Live Control Room and check for an incoming preview and healthy stream status. An OBS connection indication by itself does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy event.
Compare the time of the interruption with YouTube’s timestamped errors. The timestamps and messages can help distinguish a network interruption from a stream configuration problem. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

2. Use dropped frames and stream health to locate the fault
In OBS, rising dropped frames or a yellow or red connection indicator points to an unstable path between your computer and the ingest server, or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Enough dropped frames can lead to disconnection. YouTube’s Live Control Room checks the feed sent to YouTube and reports stream-health and configuration issues; read the exact error rather than guessing from the symptom. 3. Test the local network before blaming the ISP
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Ethernet may isolate a local wireless problem, but it cannot provide internet if the ISP connection itself is down.
Also check the modem, router, Ethernet cable, network card, VPN, and security software for problems or interference. If the encoder looks healthy but the outbound connection remains weak, test the internet connection and contact your ISP if the evidence points to a connection fault. Give the provider the time of the drop and relevant diagnostics. Do not replace equipment or conclude that a particular provider caused the problem from one brief interruption alone.

4. Lower bitrate only when upload capacity is the issue
If OBS indicates that the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, reducing it may help the stream fit available upload capacity. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee for a fluctuating connection. Lowering bitrate reduces stream quality and does not repair the underlying cause of an ISP outage. Test the chosen settings under representative conditions and watch stream health.

If YouTube reports an incorrect stream format, check that the video is H.264 and the audio is AAC, the formats YouTube identifies for this error. A format error is different from an ISP interruption; changing codecs will not restore a failed network path. Refer to YouTube’s error-message guidance.

What is specific to Indian ISPs—and what is not
The official OBS and YouTube guidance is general; it does not establish an India-only recovery setting or identify a best provider, plan, city, or access technology. If a short interruption recurs, use timestamps and connection diagnostics to determine whether the fault is local or on the provider’s path rather than assuming its cause from geography.
