If you can’t receive Amazon’s two-step verification (2SV) code at your old number, first try a registered backup method or a device Amazon recognizes as trusted. If neither works, use Amazon’s Two-Step Verification Account Recovery flow from the sign-in screen and complete the identity-verification steps shown there.
Try a backup method or trusted device first
Amazon recommends trying a registered backup verification method or a trusted device before starting account recovery. If you can use either option to sign in, you can then update the phone number on your account.
Start Amazon’s two-step verification recovery flow
- Go to Amazon sign-in and enter the email address or phone number associated with your account, along with your password.
- When Amazon asks for the 2SV code, select “Didn’t Receive the Code”.
- Select “Two-Step Verification Account Recovery” and follow the on-screen instructions to verify your identity. [Amazon Customer Service: Recover Your Account after Two-Step Verification Fails]
Amazon says it cannot change your 2SV settings until your identity has been successfully verified. Its recovery instructions do not give a standard completion-time estimate or specify one document requirement that applies to every account, so follow the requirements presented in your own recovery flow.

After signing in, open Your Account > Login & security. From there, manage the phone numbers enrolled for verification; Amazon’s related instructions also explain how to add an authenticator app. The exact options shown may depend on your account and current interface. Reduce the chance of another lockout
Amazon describes 2SV as requiring your account password plus a separate code, delivered by text or an authenticator app. Where your account settings allow it, keep a reachable backup method and consider adding an authenticator app. An app is an optional security method, not a way to bypass identity verification during recovery.
