If a power fluctuation disconnects your YouTube live stream, restoring power to the PC is only the first step. The PC must boot, the encoder must reconnect and send video, and YouTube must show that it is receiving the stream. Check each stage in order; a reboot alone does not guarantee that your broadcast has resumed.
What automatic recovery depends on
Recovery involves three separate stages: power returns and the PC starts; Windows loads and the streaming encoder opens or is restarted; then the encoder reconnects to YouTube and the Live Control Room shows incoming video. A failure at any stage can leave the stream offline.
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings let a creator start or stop a stream from the encoder, but they do not guarantee that a reboot restores the prior encoder session or resumes an event automatically. Treat recovery as something to verify, not a guaranteed one-switch feature. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and its encoder setup instructions.

- Wait for power and internet to stabilize. If the modem or router also lost power, allow it to reconnect before troubleshooting the PC. YouTube recommends leaving upload bandwidth headroom: the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth, and its guidance recommends 20% room. A disrupted connection can interrupt the stream. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Check whether the PC restarted. If it remains off after mains power returns, consult the PC or motherboard manual for a firmware option commonly called “Restore on AC Power Loss” or similar. The option may determine whether the computer stays off, powers on, or returns to its previous state. Labels, availability, and defaults vary by model. For example, an MSI motherboard manual from 2019 documents “Restore after AC Power Loss” with “Power Off” as the default; that example does not establish the setting for other PCs. See the MSI manual guidance.
- Check Windows startup and the encoder. Confirm that Windows has loaded and that your streaming software is running. Check that the intended scene and its audio and video sources are available, and that the encoder has the correct YouTube stream URL and key. Windows startup follows firmware and pre-boot stages, so a firmware setting that powers on the PC does not itself launch the encoder. See Microsoft’s Windows startup troubleshooting overview. Protect your stream key as a credential.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room. Look for the preview, stream state, and health indicators to confirm YouTube is receiving video. If the encoder reports a start error, YouTube recommends checking and copying the current stream key into the encoder; follow its live stream troubleshooting steps.
- Confirm the event state before restarting. If the encoder stopped sending content and the event ended, inspect the event in YouTube Studio before starting again. Choose the appropriate existing event or create a new one deliberately; an unintended second stream can confuse viewers. YouTube’s encoder workflow explains how the encoder sends content and how stopping it affects the stream: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Verify the result. Once video returns, check the preview and monitor audio and video. Confirm that viewers can access the stream and that the archive or stream visibility is as expected.
What to set up before the next broadcast
YouTube recommends configuring the encoder ahead of time, starting it before the event, checking the preview and stream access, and monitoring audio and video. Test your own recovery chain before an important broadcast, preferably with an unlisted or private test where appropriate. You can test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then check how your setup behaves. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

- Check the motherboard or PC manual to see whether power-on after AC restoration is supported and what behavior is selected.
- Determine whether Windows requires a login before the encoder can run.
- Check whether your encoder is configured to start automatically and whether it can reconnect after a restart. The exact setup depends on the encoder and Windows configuration.
- Confirm that the YouTube event remains usable after reconnecting, and know how to inspect its state in Studio.
- Keep a safe copy of the current stream key so you can re-enter it if necessary; do not share it publicly.
Microsoft Q&A has a community answer pointing to firmware settings for power restoration, but it is not definitive configuration guidance for every Windows PC. Consult the documentation for your specific hardware and software.
Manual recovery or a UPS?
| Approach | What it can do | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Manual or configured restart | Costs no new hardware and may bring the PC and encoder back after power returns. | Requires a person or a working startup configuration to restore the PC, encoder, and stream. It cannot keep the session online while power or network equipment is down. |
| UPS for selected equipment | Can provide temporary power to the equipment connected to it. | It does not by itself restart the encoder or restore a YouTube event. Required load, runtime, and whether the modem and router are also backed up must be established for your setup; no specific model or runtime is established here. |
A UPS may reduce interruptions, but it is not a substitute for testing the complete recovery chain. Include the network equipment in your planning if it must remain powered for the PC to reach YouTube.

Common failures and what to check
- The PC stays off after power returns: Check the model-specific firmware documentation for an AC-restoration option and its selected behavior. Do not assume your motherboard uses the same menu or default as another model.
- The PC is on, but no stream is being sent: Check that Windows finished loading, the encoder is open, and its scene and sources are available. A PC boot does not prove the encoder restarted.
- The encoder cannot connect: Confirm the router and internet connection are stable, then inspect the encoder’s stream URL and current key. If YouTube reports a start error, use its troubleshooting guidance.
- The preview is absent or unhealthy: Check the Live Control Room and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom relative to the total stream bitrate; this is guidance, not a guarantee that every connection disruption will be avoided.
- The event appears to have ended: Inspect its state in Studio before starting again, so you do not unintentionally create a second event or confuse viewers.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should keep playing uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud rather than relying on a home PC staying on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
