A livestream disappearing from a YouTube VOD playlist does not necessarily mean its archive was deleted. If you own the channel, check YouTube Studio > Content > Live and inspect the ended stream’s visibility. If it is not there, look for a local recording. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Check whether the archive still exists
Find the stream in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to the Google account that has access to the channel that hosted the gaming livestream. If you manage multiple channels, switch to the correct one.
- Open YouTube Studio > Content > Live.
- Find the ended stream and open its details. If it appears there, the archive exists in Studio even if you cannot find it in the channel’s playlist.
YouTube documents archive visibility changes from the Live content area. A playlist entry disappearing, on its own, does not establish that the underlying archive was deleted. See YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance.
If you are a viewer, ask the channel owner
A viewer may not be able to determine whether an archive is private, unlisted, or missing. Ask the channel owner for the archive link or confirmation of its visibility. A private video cannot be watched by someone who only has its old link.

Check the archive’s visibility
If the stream is listed in Studio, inspect its visibility setting. An archive may be unlisted or private rather than publicly discoverable. Unlisted videos are generally accessible to people with the link but do not normally appear in the channel’s Videos tab or YouTube search. Private videos are restricted to the owner and people specifically granted access. The owner can check or change the setting in Studio, then share the appropriate link if access is intended. YouTube explains live stream settings and older unlisted content in its live stream settings and older unlisted content guidance.

If the archive is absent from Studio
Consider the stream’s length
YouTube says it can automatically archive livestreams shorter than 12 hours. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be available, so check for another copy rather than assuming the playlist is the only record. The platform’s current guidance is in Archive live streams.
Search for a local recording
Check the recording destination configured in the streaming software, any external drive used during the broadcast, and any backup location. A local copy exists only if recording was enabled and the resulting file is intact. YouTube recommends making a local archive backup; its livestream tips also advise checking that the local archive file is valid and that its size is growing while the stream is underway.

If you find a file, open or play it to confirm it is complete and usable before relying on it. For future broadcasts, save recordings to storage with enough free space for the stream’s bitrate and duration, and retain a second copy if the recording matters.
Ask about Creator Support if available
YouTube’s Help materials do not describe a guaranteed restoration path for a deleted or uncaptured archive. A YouTube Help community FAQ says creators with access to Creator Support can contact that team about a livestream archive, but it does not promise recovery. If neither Studio nor local storage has a copy, contact support if your channel has access, while treating recovery as uncertain.

What DVR and Live Redirect do—and do not do
DVR affects playback while a stream is live
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live broadcast. Rewind may be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Turning DVR off does not prevent a recording of the full stream from becoming available once it is ready, so changing DVR is not a way to restore a missing post-stream VOD. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Live Redirect sends viewers elsewhere when a stream ends
Live Redirect can route viewers to a Premiere or another livestream after the current broadcast; it does not recover a past VOD. YouTube says creators sending redirects need more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Details are in YouTube Live Redirect guidance.

Check for a copyright or policy interruption
If the gaming stream ended unexpectedly, review YouTube Studio for notices or restrictions. YouTube says third-party content may interrupt or terminate a livestream, and Content ID claims may be made after an archived stream ends. A policy or copyright issue is distinct from a playlist visibility problem; check the relevant Studio notice rather than treating it as an archive-setting fix. See Copyright issues with live streams.

Prevent the next archive loss
- Record a local archive as a backup and verify the destination before going live.
- During the broadcast, confirm the local file is being created and its size is increasing; afterward, test that the file plays.
- Keep the stream under 12 hours if you need YouTube’s automatic archiving to be an option. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured.
- For valuable recordings, keep a separate backup rather than relying on a single local drive.
These steps protect against different failures: a local recording may preserve a copy when a YouTube archive is absent, while a platform archive does not replace checking that a local recording actually completed.
