After an Indian VPS restarts, the old FFmpeg process is gone. First restore the FFmpeg service, then confirm in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room that YouTube receives the right feed and that the broadcast event is live. A running process alone does not prove that the intended YouTube stream has resumed.
Recover the stream in two places
Work through the server checks first, then verify the result at YouTube. The VPS provider is not identified here, so there is no provider-specific restart procedure or restoration-time estimate; check that provider’s status and support channels for the host incident.
1. Confirm the VPS is reachable
- Check the provider’s status or support information for an incident and, if available, the reboot time and reason.
- Reconnect to the VPS over SSH and confirm network access. If the host is unreachable, this is a provider or network problem to resolve before diagnosing FFmpeg.
2. Inspect the FFmpeg service and current-boot logs
Use the actual systemd unit name configured on your server. These illustrative commands have not been tested against your VPS:

systemctl status <service-name>
journalctl -u <service-name> -bCheck whether the service is active, failed, or repeatedly restarting, and read the latest error before trying again. The -b option limits the journal query to the current boot. Confirm that the service is enabled to start at boot if it was expected to recover automatically.

3. Fix the reported cause, then start the service
Errors may point to a missing input file, incorrect path, permissions, unavailable disk space, a bad command-line option, or an expired or replaced YouTube stream key. Correct the specific cause before starting the unit; otherwise it may fail in the same way again.
sudo systemctl start <service-name>If the unit is already active but its FFmpeg process is stuck or failed, inspect the logs and unit configuration before restarting it:
sudo systemctl restart <service-name>Use the restart command only after checking the latest error: restarting without fixing the cause can create a loop of failed starts.
4. Verify the YouTube output settings securely
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the stream URL and key configured for the encoder against the values the event provides. YouTube documents its stream key as the encoder credential and explains how to find the URL and key in its Live Control Room stream settings. Do not publish the real key in a command, screenshot, support post, or log excerpt. If it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the service configuration.

5. Confirm YouTube receives the feed and the event is live
Wait for the incoming preview, then inspect stream health and timestamped messages in the Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during an event: YouTube encoder settings and live-streaming guidance. Follow the specific error message if one appears. If the event has ended or YouTube requires an operator to start or go live, reconnecting FFmpeg will not perform that action for you.
6. Check where playback resumes
A newly started FFmpeg process may begin the media file or playlist from the start. Do not assume the VPS or FFmpeg has preserved the previous process’s playback position; verify what viewers are receiving.
Which recovery layer handles which failure?

Prepare FFmpeg to recover next time
Run FFmpeg under systemd
For reboot recovery, run FFmpeg as a foreground process managed by a systemd unit that is enabled at boot. Configure a controlled restart delay and useful logs, and protect the stream key with appropriate file permissions or a supported credential mechanism. Validate the unit against the systemd version installed on the VPS and test it with the actual media source. A service manager can start a new process after reboot; it does not guarantee that the new process will connect successfully or restore the YouTube event state.

Use output retry only for failures it covers
FFmpeg documents FIFO muxer recovery options including attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time for certain output failures. Its manual describes an example that continues processing during a temporary network outage and retries output. Check the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and your installed build before using those options. FIFO output retry is not reboot recovery: after a VPS restart, the original FFmpeg process no longer exists.

Use compatible YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS where supported. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Codec, resolution, and frame-rate choices depend on the ingestion protocol and stream configuration; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings rather than assuming every option applies to every setup.
Test unattended recovery before relying on it: observe both the systemd logs and the Live Control Room after a controlled restart or output interruption. YouTube also recommends testing and monitoring stream health.

The VPS is unreachable
Check the provider’s status and support channel. Until SSH and network access return, you cannot inspect or restart FFmpeg. No provider-specific fix or recovery time can be inferred without the provider’s identity and incident information.

Read the current boot’s unit logs, correct the reported cause, and start the unit. Check boot enablement so the service is scheduled to run after a future reboot.

FFmpeg runs, but YouTube has no incoming feed
Check the configured server URL and protocol, stream key, outbound network access, and FFmpeg’s output messages. Use the URL and key shown in the event’s Live Control Room settings; do not rely on a remembered value if YouTube now shows different settings.
YouTube rejects the encoder connection
Use the timestamped health message to identify the problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes updating the stream key for encoder-start issues; reset it only when the error or suspected exposure warrants it, then update the VPS configuration securely. YouTube shows video, but the event is not live
Check the event state and follow the controls shown in the Live Control Room. Receiving video and making the event live are separate checks; reconnecting FFmpeg is not a guarantee that every event resumes automatically.
The output drops while FFmpeg remains running
If the failure is a temporary output interruption covered by the FIFO muxer’s documented behavior, FIFO recovery may help. It will not correct a persistent network fault, bad key, missing input, or a VPS reboot.
