First find out which part failed: FFmpeg may have exited, the playlist or its media segments may be unavailable, or FFmpeg may still be running without sending a usable stream to YouTube. Check the service status and logs before restarting, then test the input and output separately. After making a fix, verify the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and play the channel’s watch page. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove viewers are receiving audio and video.
1. Identify the failure before restarting
Capture the recent error and service history first. Repeatedly restarting a failing service can bury useful context, and an automatic restart can keep repeating a broken command without fixing it.
- Check whether FFmpeg is running. If it is managed by systemd, run
sudo systemctl status YOUR_SERVICE_NAME. Replace the placeholder with the actual unit name. Note whether the unit is active, restarting, or failed, and record the exit status or signal if shown. - Read recent service logs. Run
sudo journalctl -u YOUR_SERVICE_NAME -n 100 --no-pager. If FFmpeg writes to a separate log instead, inspect that log as well. Keep the original error text for diagnosis, but do not publish stream keys, signed playlist URLs, or other credentials. - Classify the last meaningful error. Look for input or segment fetch failures, DNS or TLS errors, HTTP authentication or expiry responses, YouTube output or key errors, an orderly end-of-file (EOF), resource exhaustion, or a signal/timeout. A process that is active but has stopped making progress is a different failure from one that exited.
- Check host resources when FFmpeg exited unexpectedly. Check available disk space and memory, the service restart history, and kernel or out-of-memory messages. These checks help distinguish a resource problem from a bad URL or an ingest failure.
Indian VPS location alone does not identify the cause. Use your provider’s status information and the server’s logs and network checks before attributing an interruption to a region or provider.
2. Test the playlist and its media segments
A playlist URL can respond successfully while one or more referenced media segments fail. Test from the VPS itself, where FFmpeg runs, rather than relying only on a browser on your home connection.

- Confirm the playlist hostname resolves and the URL is reachable from the VPS. For HTTP(S) sources, a basic check such as
curl -I 'PLAYLIST_URL'can reveal connection or HTTP response problems, but it does not prove that every segment can be downloaded or that the format is valid. - Inspect the playlist for referenced segment URLs and check whether those URLs still resolve and load. If the source requires authentication or uses expiring signed URLs, verify that the credentials and links are still valid.
- Check whether the input is actually intended to continue indefinitely. An ordinary finite playlist can reach EOF normally; treating EOF as an error is appropriate only when the source is meant to be endless or live.
- For an HTTP input, inspect the installed FFmpeg build’s supported HTTP options with
ffmpeg -h protocol=http. FFmpeg documents reconnect controls includingreconnect,reconnect_at_eof,reconnect_streamed,reconnect_on_network_error,reconnect_on_http_error, and limits such asreconnect_delay_max,reconnect_max_retries, andreconnect_delay_total_max. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
These are HTTP protocol options, not universal fixes for every playlist format, authentication scheme, or failure. Confirm that your installed version supports an option and place it where FFmpeg applies it to the intended input. Do not copy a generic command line without checking the actual input type and service command.
3. Check YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key
If the playlist is loading but YouTube has no preview, inspect the output configuration next. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the current stream URL and key match what the FFmpeg service uses. YouTube describes the stream key as similar to a password and address: it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. See Manage live stream settings.

- Copy the current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room and compare them with the service’s configuration without exposing either value in a ticket, screenshot, command example, or public log.
- If the key changed, update the secret or configuration used by the service, then restart the service deliberately. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the server configuration at the same time.
- Use the exact RTMPS URL YouTube shows if your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. RTMPS encrypts the RTMP connection; YouTube recommends it and explains the setup at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Check VPS outbound connectivity and any provider firewall or egress restrictions if the source works but the output cannot reach YouTube. Use Live Control Room’s displayed messages to narrow down whether YouTube is receiving a feed.
Do not rotate a key casually: changing it without also updating the service will interrupt output rather than repair it.
4. Choose the restart method that matches the failure
Input temporarily unavailable, FFmpeg still running
For a transient HTTP interruption, supported FFmpeg reconnect options may let the same process retry the input. Set finite retry and delay limits appropriate to the source, and watch whether the playlist and segment requests resume. Reconnect behavior cannot correct a persistent 404, expired authentication, malformed playlist, unsupported option, or source that has ended.

FFmpeg exited
A service manager can relaunch FFmpeg after a qualifying process failure. For a systemd service, the service manual documents Restart=on-failure for nonzero exits and qualifying signal, timeout, or watchdog failures; the default is Restart=no. Read the systemd.service manual and confirm the unit’s behavior on your distribution.
Set a restart delay and suitable rate limits rather than allowing a tight crash loop. Keep the logs available and store credentials in a suitably protected configuration or secret mechanism, not in a world-readable unit file. A restart policy only relaunches the command; it does not repair a bad URL, revoked key, full disk, exhausted memory, or invalid FFmpeg options.

FFmpeg is active but YouTube receives no usable feed
Do not treat active as success. Check whether the input is progressing, whether FFmpeg is producing output, whether the configured URL and key are current, and whether Live Control Room reports an ingest problem. If the preview appears but video or audio is poor, investigate bitrate stability, upload capacity, and the actual audio and video streams.
5. Check encoder settings and VPS upload capacity
When YouTube receives a feed but reports unstable or poor health, compare the stream’s actual settings with YouTube’s guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s encoder recommendations list RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options; its standard guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not apply one settings-table row to a different stream. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. That is recommended headroom, not a guarantee of stability for an individual VPS. Compare it with reliable outbound capacity from the server; a stream bitrate that consumes all available capacity can leave too little margin for variation. Details are in Streaming tips.
6. Verify recovery from encoder to viewer
- Confirm that FFmpeg remains stable and that logs show input and output progress rather than repeated reconnects or exits.
- Open the intended event in YouTube Live Control Room. Check that the preview appears and that stream health and messages indicate an acceptable feed.
- Confirm the event’s intended privacy setting and that you are checking the correct stream event.
- Open the channel’s watch page and verify that both audio and video play for a viewer. Do not call the recovery complete based only on systemd status or a process listing.
YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health and messages, checking the preview, testing failover, and verifying that the event is accessible. Its guides are Streaming tips and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
7. Troubleshoot recurring failures

8. Protect the devotional stream’s content and credentials
Use recordings you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright requirements before relaunching a playlist. A successful encoder connection does not establish that you have the rights to every recording. Keep stream keys and signed playlist URLs private; redact them before sharing diagnostics.
