Recover the server first, then the encoder, then YouTube ingest: a power cut can interrupt any of those layers. Start by checking whether your VPS is running and reachable, restart only the encoder process that actually belongs to your setup, and confirm reception in YouTube Live Control Room. A reconnect does not guarantee that the original broadcast or watch page will continue unchanged.
1. Check whether the VPS is reachable
- Try SSH. Use the host name or IP address and account details you normally use. If you can log in, continue to the encoder checks below.
- If SSH fails, open your VPS provider’s dashboard. Check the VM’s power state and whether the provider reports a regional service issue. If the VPS is stopped, use the dashboard’s power control to start it, following the provider’s instructions.
- Use the provider’s recovery or web console if available. Console names and access methods differ by host. For example, DigitalOcean documents a Recovery Console for cases such as lost VM network connectivity or a failed SSH daemon; this is not a universal procedure for Indian VPS providers. If the server is still inaccessible, check the provider’s status page and support route before changing YouTube settings. A failed SSH connection alone does not show whether the VM is powered off, still booting, or simply unreachable over the network.
2. Check and restart the encoder
Once logged in, identify how this particular server starts its encoder: it may be a manually launched command, a service, or another process manager. Check that process’s current state and recent system logs for the time of the outage. Restart the actual stopped service or command using the procedure configured for your installation.

- Do not assume a service name, unit file, or encoder command from another server. The correct names and restart procedure depend on the software and VPS configuration.
- Keep stream keys and other credentials out of shared logs, screenshots, and support messages. If troubleshooting requires sharing output, redact secrets first.
- If the process is running but YouTube receives no data, move on to network egress and encoder settings rather than repeatedly restarting it.
3. Verify the outbound connection and YouTube settings
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says to enter the channel’s YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Open Live Control Room and compare the configured values with the current stream settings there. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the encoder software and the server’s outbound internet connection. - Confirm the VPS has working internet access, including outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest service.
- Verify the encoder is running and configured with the correct server URL and stream key shown for your stream in Live Control Room.
- For the configuration issue documented by YouTube, use H.264 video and AAC audio.
If you use RTMPS
Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room rather than copying a guessed ingest address. YouTube specifies that the URL protocol must be rtmps; its guidance also recommends checking port 443 where needed and confirming that the encoder supports RTMPS. Details: YouTube RTMPS guidance.
4. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream
Open the stream in Live Control Room and check the preview and health indicator. YouTube displays stream errors with timestamps there; use those messages to distinguish an ingest or configuration problem from a server-side process failure. Then check the public watch page to see what viewers can currently access. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending output, but that does not establish how a particular 24/7 broadcast or watch page behaves after an outage and restart. Do not assume reconnecting will resume the same broadcast.

5. If the VPS will not boot
If the VM fails to boot or its filesystem appears damaged after abrupt power loss, follow the provider’s recovery procedure and contact its support team when appropriate. Recovery steps are host-specific. DigitalOcean documents booting to its Recovery ISO and using tools such as fsck for filesystem recovery; those directions apply to DigitalOcean and should not be treated as instructions for an unspecified Indian VPS. 6. Reduce the chance of another manual restart
For a Linux setup that uses systemd, an operator can configure the encoder service to start at boot and restart after a failure. The exact unit directives and retry behavior must suit the installed encoder and Linux distribution. Validate the configuration during a planned maintenance window, and confirm that the encoder reconnects and YouTube receives data. Do not paste a generic unit file onto a server without checking its command, user, paths, environment variables, and credential handling.
