Start with YouTube Studio > Content > Live and check whether the interrupted broadcast has an archive. Then check whether the original event is still active in Live Control Room and whether your encoder saved a local recording. Reconnecting may resume sending video if the event and setup still allow it, but YouTube does not document a way to restore footage that was never recorded or to merge an outage gap into one continuous recording.
1. Check for the YouTube broadcast archive
- Open YouTube Studio, choose Content, then open the Live tab.
- Find the interrupted broadcast and open it. Check whether playback is available and review its visibility setting; YouTube says archive visibility can be changed in Studio.
- Play the recording and seek around the time power failed. Confirm what footage is actually present rather than assuming the archive is complete.
YouTube describes automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, including 1440p and 2160p video. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is not a guarantee that a stream interrupted by an outage will have a complete archive. The cited Help page does not state a publication year.
2. See whether the original live event can continue
- Open the stream in Live Control Room and inspect its state and preview.
- If the event is still active, restore power and network access to the encoder, then reconnect it using its configured stream URL and key.
- If the encoder will not start, check that it is using the intended stream key. YouTube’s settings and troubleshooting guidance advises checking the key and updating it when needed; follow the settings shown for your event.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview to confirm video is arriving before assuming the stream has resumed.
These steps may restore the encoder’s outgoing video, but YouTube does not promise that an event interrupted by a power failure will resume as the same continuous broadcast. The official guidance covers stream settings and encoder troubleshooting, not a guaranteed outage-recovery or recording-merge feature: manage live stream settings and troubleshoot a YouTube live stream.

3. Check the encoder’s local recording
- On the computer or encoder used for the stream, check its configured recording destination.
- Look for a file created during the broadcast. Open it and inspect the footage around the outage; verify whether it contains the interval missing from YouTube.
- If the recording is damaged or incomplete, keep an untouched copy before attempting repair or conversion. A local file only helps if recording was enabled and the footage was successfully written.
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup, verifying that the file is intact, and checking that its size grows while streaming. Its live streaming tips also recommend testing backup-encoder failover before an event.

4. Understand what DVR and playlists can—and cannot—recover
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream; it is not documented as a way to reconstruct video that was never captured. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek earlier than the stream’s start. See Turn on DVR on live streams.
A playlist or stream URL does not contain a recoverable copy of missing footage. If neither the YouTube archive nor a local recording includes the interval, the cited YouTube documentation describes no way to recreate those frames.

5. Prevent a repeat outage from losing the recording
- Record locally: Enable local recording and verify the file opens and grows during a test stream. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive.
- Test failover: Test backup-encoder failover before the event, as YouTube recommends. Treat it as a continuity measure, not a guarantee that a YouTube archive will remain one uninterrupted file.
- Allow network headroom: YouTube recommends having 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream requires and warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. This is a streaming recommendation, not an outage-recovery specification. See YouTube streaming tips.
- Keep recording equipment powered: As a practical consequence of this outage scenario, a local recording protects footage only while the encoder and its storage remain powered and able to write the file.
For encoder setup guidance, including the equipment YouTube identifies as capable of streaming up to 2160p60, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. That guide is for future setup, not recovery of a past broadcast.
6. If you use HLS ingestion
These settings apply only to HLS ingestion; they do not create a special recovery path after power loss. YouTube’s HLS setup guide specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP.
