First check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room: confirm whether the broadcast is still active and whether YouTube is receiving data. If it is, restart the encoder and reconnect with that stream’s configured URL and key. Then wait for the preview, check stream health, and confirm that audio and video are back. A crash does not guarantee that the same broadcast or watch page can be resumed, so use the live state shown in Control Room to guide recovery.
Recover the stream in this order
- Check the broadcast in Live Control Room. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and determine whether the broadcast still shows as live, whether YouTube is receiving data, and whether the encoder has stopped. Do not reset the stream key as a first step; it is a separate troubleshooting action, not a fix for an encoder crash.
- Restart the encoder and reconnect. Reopen or restart the encoder application or service. Confirm that the intended audio and video inputs are present, then connect using the stream URL and key configured for this YouTube stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains where to enter these connection details: YouTube encoder setup.
- Wait for the preview and check output. In Live Control Room, confirm that the preview returns and inspect stream health. Check that viewers can hear the expected audio and see the expected video; an encoder showing a connection does not by itself confirm that the program content is correct.
- If it will not reconnect, isolate the fault. Update the encoder if needed; verify the URL and key; read the encoder’s error messages and check CPU load; confirm the audio/video source is routed correctly; and test outbound internet connectivity. YouTube advises checking upload speed: a connection’s download speed may be much higher than its upload capacity. Use YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance to check the incoming signal and connection.
- Replace the key only when there is a reason. If the key is known to be wrong or has been reset, copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. Changing a key will not repair a crashed encoder, missing input, or network outage.
- If you use RTMPS, verify the protocol. Get the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder supports the protocol and is using the correct server. Do not switch protocols speculatively when the fault may be elsewhere. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion instructions.
YouTube documents general encoder setup and troubleshooting, not the restart controls or watchdog behavior of every encoder. Use the current instructions for your specific encoder for application- or service-specific recovery steps.
When to use a backup encoder
A backup encoder can keep a feed available when the primary encoder fails, but it helps only if it is configured in advance and tested. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Plan network capacity for both feeds. YouTube recommends enough upload capacity for the primary and backup streams, plus a 20% margin. Check your actual upload capacity rather than relying on the connection’s advertised download speed, and test the complete failover path before depending on it.

Keep a separate recording for a 24/7 stream
Confirm that your local recording is being written and that its file is growing. YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. That is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be archived or that every longer one will be lost.
