First identify what is missing: a YouTube playlist, an OBS scene or source configuration, an external playlist file, or the media files themselves. Recovery depends on whether another copy of that specific item still exists. YouTube and OBS do not document a way to reconstruct a lost external playlist from a live stream or archive alone.
If the stream is still running, preserve its current state before changing anything. Then inspect surviving configurations and backups, and rebuild only from media and records you can access and have rights to stream.
Identify which playlist or file disappeared
“Playlist” can mean different things in a 24/7 setup, and each has a different recovery path.
- YouTube playlist: A playlist managed on YouTube, separate from the files your encoder plays.
- OBS configuration: A scene collection or source setup that tells OBS what to play and how to stream it.
- External playlist file: A file used by a source or plugin to define a sequence of media.
- Media files: The actual story recordings, music, or other content referenced by the playlist.
Establish which item is missing and where it lived before attempting recovery. The exact steps vary with the streaming software, operating system, source type, and whether another copy exists.

If a YouTube playlist is missing
Check your YouTube library and playlist controls to determine whether it is simply no longer saved there or was deleted. YouTube Help explains how to manage playlists and notes that a deleted playlist’s URL and title stop appearing or being searchable in Analytics, although it may still appear in viewers’ watch histories. That remaining history is not a documented restore method. YouTube’s instructions for saving playlists to a library explain how to find and view playlists later; they do not promise recovery of a deleted playlist.
If an OBS source or external file is missing
In OBS, identify the source type in the scene collection used by the stream. A Media Source is for an individual media file; VLC Video can hold multiple media items and loop or shuffle them. Consult OBS’s Media Sources documentation to match the source to what you have lost. A missing external playlist file is not the same as a missing YouTube playlist, scene collection, or recording.

Protect the live stream and configuration that remain
If the stream is still live, avoid reloading or editing its active source until you have recorded or preserved its current state. This is a cautious troubleshooting measure, not a recovery step guaranteed by YouTube or OBS.
- Note the current stream status, source names, and any visible media paths or playlist entries.
- In OBS, preserve or export the surviving scene collection before making changes.
- Preserve the OBS profile and stream settings separately. OBS scene collections save scenes and sources, but output settings are stored in profiles.
OBS says, “Scene Collections save all Scenes and Sources that have been added to it.” Its Scene Collections documentation describes importing and exporting collections. A surviving collection may help recover source setup, but OBS does not promise that it contains a complete copy of an external playlist file or the media it referenced.

Search for surviving playlist data and media
Inspect the collection used by the stream and note what each source references. If a VLC Video source remains, its configured entries may still provide useful information about the intended sequence. A surviving scene collection may preserve relevant source setup, but it is not proof that the playlist file or media still exists.
Check likely places where you or your team already keep copies. These are practical avenues, not guaranteed recovery locations:

- Recycle bin or trash.
- Backup drives or backup software.
- Version history in a synced folder.
- Previously exported OBS scene collections and profiles.
- An older computer or other machine used to prepare or run the stream.
The official documentation does not identify a guaranteed Windows, macOS, or Linux location for a missing external playlist file. The file’s location depends on the source software and how the stream was configured.
A third-party OBS Media Playlist Source plugin page describes playlist settings and says developers can inspect source settings in a scene-collection JSON file. It is not an official OBS recovery utility, and inspecting a surviving configuration does not establish that missing data can be restored. The plugin also has version compatibility requirements; consult its OBS Project Forums page before relying on it. Installing a plugin cannot recreate a playlist or media that has no surviving copy.

Use archives as recordings, not playlist restores
YouTube Help says it can automatically archive a live stream when the stream is less than 12 hours. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and recommends recording a local archive as a backup. A recording that exists may help you identify story order or content, but YouTube does not describe an archive as a way to restore the encoder’s source playlist or project configuration. Do not treat DVR rewind as an archive or recovery feature. YouTube says viewers cannot seek back to before a stream went live, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See Turn on DVR on live streams.
Rebuild the playlist and resume streaming
If no copy of the playlist or configuration survives, rebuild the sequence from reliable records and media you can still access. If neither the list nor the source media exists, YouTube and OBS cannot reconstruct it for you; you will need to recreate it from your own records or recollection.
- Protect what remains. Keep the surviving scene collection, profile, settings, and any accessible media before editing or rebuilding.
- Make a new source list. Record the order of the stories and the exact media files to use. Confirm that every referenced file is available to the streaming system.
- Verify rights. Confirm you have rights to stream each story, narration, music track, and sound effect. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; unresolved matches can interrupt or terminate a stream. If content is licensed, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel. Review Copyright issues with live streams.
- Test locally. In your encoder, check that the intended sequence plays, that looping behaves as expected, and that the selected sources can access their media. Fix missing-file or playback errors before returning to continuous streaming.
- Start or resume using the appropriate YouTube settings. YouTube Live Control Room supports reusing previous stream settings and resetting a stream key. A stream key is a secret: YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address. Do not share it or include it in public documentation. See Manage live stream settings.
Prevent the next playlist loss
Keep independent, current copies of the playlist or source configuration and the media it references. A backup of only one is incomplete if the other is needed to resume the stream.

- Store a documented source list with filenames and playback order.
- Back up the playlist or configuration and the source media separately from the streaming machine.
- Keep the OBS scene collection and its associated output profile; they contain different parts of the setup.
- Periodically open or restore a backup to verify it still contains usable configuration and media.
- Consider a local recording as an additional reference or backup. YouTube Help specifically recommends recording a local archive; that recording is not a substitute for backing up the playlist and source files.
