The resulting MP4 is saved in VideosCaptures. Press Windows+Alt+M to turn microphone narration on or off. If you need to choose an entire screen, a particular window, or one Edge tab, use Clipchamp’s recorder instead.
Choose the right Edge recording method

For a normal Windows walkthrough, start with Xbox Game Bar. Use Clipchamp when recording only an Edge tab matters, when you need system audio, or when you want camera and microphone controls in the same workflow.
Record Edge with Xbox Game Bar on Windows
Before you start
- Use a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer with Edge open.
- Close private tabs, password managers, notifications, and other information that should not appear in the video.
- Open the exact page and state you want to demonstrate. Game Bar records the app or window, not a separately selected browser tab.
- If narration is required, connect and test the microphone before recording.
Start and stop the recording
- Open Windows Settings and search for Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn on the Xbox Game Bar switch.
- Open the Edge window and arrange the page as it should appear in the video.
- Press Windows+Alt+R. A recording indicator appears and capture begins.
- For microphone narration, press Windows+Alt+M. Press it again to mute the microphone while recording.
- When finished, press Windows+Alt+R again.
- Open Videos > Captures and open the new MP4 file.
The shortcut works without opening the Game Bar overlay. If you prefer the controls, press Windows+G and use the Capture widget’s record button.
What Game Bar does and does not capture
Game Bar is designed for a quick clip of an app or window. It is not the best choice when you must switch among several windows, select only one tab, or share a complete desktop layout. The recording is an MP4, so it can be trimmed or edited in a separate video editor after capture.

Record a specific Edge tab, window, or full screen with Clipchamp
Choose the target and audio
- Open Clipchamp’s recorder in Microsoft Edge.
- Choose the screen-recording option and select Entire screen, Window, or Browser tab.
- If the dialog offers it and you need computer audio, check Share system audio before confirming.
- Allow camera or microphone access when prompted. You can leave the camera off if you only need screen and voice.
- Start the recording, perform the demonstration, then stop it from the recorder controls.
- Export or save the finished video using the format and destination offered by Clipchamp.
Selecting Browser tab keeps other Edge tabs and desktop windows out of the capture. Selecting Entire screen is appropriate for a multi-window demonstration, while Window records one application window without showing the rest of the desktop.
Allow Edge camera and microphone permissions
If Clipchamp or SharePoint reports that a camera or microphone is blocked, open Edge Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All sites. Find the Clipchamp or SharePoint site, set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload the recorder. A permission change may not affect an already-open recording tab until it is refreshed.
Use Clipchamp on macOS
Microsoft documents this Edge recording experience for Edge 79 and newer on macOS. On the first attempt, macOS may display a privacy prompt. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording, enable Microsoft Edge, and restart Edge before trying again. Without that operating-system permission, a recorder can open normally but receive a blank or unavailable screen.
Record with an Edge extension
An Edge Add-ons recorder can be useful when you need annotations, webcam overlays, local saving, MP4 or WebM downloads, or a built-in sharing workflow. Capabilities differ by extension: some capture a desktop, tab, or camera, while others only capture the current tab. The Awesome Screen Recorder listing, for example, reports version 4.3.6 updated April 27, 2026; marketplace listings and permissions can change, so verify the current compatibility statement and privacy disclosure before installing.

Prefer a built-in method when a recording contains confidential work, credentials, customer data, or internal dashboards. An extension may request permission to read page content or interact with tabs, which is broader access than a one-time screen share.
Why Edge says screen recording is blocked
Organization policy
A work or school administrator can disable webpage screen sharing even when Edge itself launches normally. Microsoft’s ScreenCaptureAllowed policy can deny APIs such as getDisplayMedia() and the Desktop Capture extension API. The policy applies to Windows and macOS version 83 or newer, Android 147 or newer, and has no iOS support. An origin-specific rule can override the general policy, so one approved site may work while another is denied.
If the message says recording is managed by your organization, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass the control. Ask whether the required site or recording tool can be approved and whether a managed recorder is available.
Permission was denied
- Clipchamp cannot use the microphone or camera: set the site permissions to Allow using the Edge path above, then reload.
- macOS reports that the screen is unavailable: enable Edge under Screen & System Audio Recording and restart the browser.
- A tab-share dialog has no audio: select Share system audio before confirming the tab or window. Device audio and microphone narration are separate controls.
Game Bar does not start
- Return to Windows Settings and confirm Xbox Game Bar is enabled.
- Make sure Edge is the active window when pressing Windows+Alt+R.
- Check that the keyboard’s Windows key is not disabled by a gaming-mode utility.
- If policy or security software disables Game Bar, use an approved Clipchamp workflow or ask your administrator.
The video is black, blank, or incomplete
- For Clipchamp, reselect the intended screen, window, or tab instead of reusing an expired share.
- On macOS, confirm Edge has screen-recording permission and restart it.
- Some protected media, virtual desktops, remote sessions, and hardware-accelerated surfaces may not render in a capture. Test a short clip before recording the full tutorial.
- Keep the page open and wait for dynamic content to finish loading before starting. A page that is still navigating can produce missing panels or late-loading images.
Improve audio and recording quality
Microphone narration
Use Windows+Alt+M during a Game Bar recording to toggle the microphone. With Clipchamp, choose the correct input device before starting and make a ten-second test so you can hear both narration and system audio at the intended levels.

System audio
Clipchamp’s Share system audio option controls audio generated by the selected screen, window, or tab. It does not automatically replace microphone permission; enable and test each source separately.
Performance
- Close heavy downloads and unnecessary tabs.
- Use a wired or stable network if the demonstration depends on a live site.
- Record a short sample first, especially at high display resolution or while showing animation.
- Keep sufficient free disk space for the MP4 and any exported edits.
