The simplest way to record an online class is to use the meeting platform’s built-in recorder, if the host, account, and organization allow it. After class, find and review the saved file, address privacy and copyright issues, then upload it through YouTube Studio and choose the right visibility. Recording permission and file storage differ across Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.

Before recording: check permission, access, and storage

Check with the meeting host and, for a school or workplace account, its administrator before class. Recording may be disabled by account policy, license, or host settings. Tell participants before recording and follow applicable institutional rules and local requirements. A platform’s recording notice does not by itself establish that you have permission to publish the recording.

  • Confirm that you are allowed to start a recording and that the host or administrator has enabled it.
  • Know whether the file will be saved locally or in cloud storage, and make sure there is room.
  • Consider whether students’ faces, names, chat messages, questions, or other personal information need to be excluded or edited out.
  • Check rights in slides, music, video clips, and other materials. Recording a class does not transfer ownership of material used in it.

How recording works in Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams

Platform Where it saves Important conditions and limits
Zoom Local files on the computer used to record. Computer recording requires the desktop app for Windows, macOS, or Linux; it is not supported on iOS or Android. The account owner or administrator may disable recording, and participant permissions may govern who can request or start it.
Google Meet The meeting organizer’s Google Drive, in the “Google Meet” folder. The Workspace administrator must enable recording, and the host or eligible participant must have permission. Education edition eligibility varies. Check Drive storage; Google notes that recorded captions may appear later than the video. Existing “Meet Recordings” were moved into a “Legacy Meet Recordings” folder inside “Google Meet” in July 2026; new recordings use meeting-specific subfolders.
Microsoft Teams The organizer’s OneDrive for Business or SharePoint, depending on meeting type. Recording requires an eligible license and permission under the organizer’s cloud-recording policy and IT settings. Guests and people from other organizations cannot start or stop recordings under the standard conditions Microsoft describes. Some shared elements are not captured.

Record a Zoom class to your computer

  1. Before the class, sign in to the Zoom web portal and open Settings > Recording.
  2. Enable Record to computer files. If the setting is locked, ask the account administrator to enable it.
  3. During class, use Zoom’s recording controls to start the computer recording, if your host permissions allow it. Check that the computer has enough free disk space.
  4. After the meeting, locate the recording on the computer and play it back before uploading. Zoom computer recordings can include video, shared content, audio, chat messages, and closed captions, depending on the recording and meeting configuration.

Zoom’s computer recorder requires its desktop application; a phone or tablet cannot make this type of recording. See Zoom’s instructions for enabling or disabling computer recording.

Record a Google Meet class

  1. Before class, confirm with the Workspace administrator that recording is enabled and that your account is eligible. Education plans differ: Education Fundamentals and Education Standard do not let teachers, staff, or students record meetings they organize; Teaching and Learning Upgrade and Education Plus have different eligibility.
  2. In the meeting, use the recording control if it is available to you. If it is missing or unavailable, check with the host or administrator rather than assuming you can record through Meet.
  3. After the meeting, open the organizer’s Google Drive and look in the Google Meet folder. Google says recordings include the active speaker and presented material. The organizer can download the file from Drive.
  4. Check that the file has finished processing and that the organization has enough storage. If you need captions, note that they may become available after the video.

For Google’s current eligibility and saving details, see Record a video meeting in Google Meet.

Record a Microsoft Teams class

  1. During the meeting, select More actions > Record and transcribe > Start recording, then confirm.
  2. Participants receive an automatic recording notification. If the control is unavailable, the organizer’s policy, IT settings, or license may not permit recording.
  3. When finished, find the recording in the organizer’s OneDrive for Business or SharePoint, according to the meeting type. Share it explicitly with external attendees if they need access.
  4. Play the file and check what was actually captured before publishing.

Teams recordings do not capture every meeting element. Microsoft lists limitations that include more than four video streams at once, whiteboards and annotations, shared notes, app-shared content, and embedded PowerPoint Live video or animation. Availability, permissions, storage, and expiration can also depend on organizational settings. See Microsoft’s Teams recording instructions and its recording-policy guidance.

Review and prepare the recording

Watch or listen to the saved file before you upload it. Meeting software records its configured meeting view, not necessarily every item that appeared on someone’s screen or was shared. Check the start and end, audio clarity, slide legibility, captions, and whether sensitive information or participant contributions remain. Trim or edit as needed, and obtain permission or remove material you do not have rights to share.

  • Do not assume that crediting a lecturer or adding a source link gives you permission to use their slides, music, or other copyrighted material.
  • Recording participants may require consent depending on the region and circumstances. Zoom’s terms assign users responsibility for complying with applicable laws, including laws that require consent to audio or video recording.

Upload the class recording in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select the upload option, then choose the recording file.
  2. Add a clear title and description, and set the audience. For educational uploads, YouTube offers education-specific fields, including type, level, academic system, and course or standard.
  3. Add captions or subtitles, either from the recording or in YouTube’s upload workflow, and check their timing and accuracy.
  4. Review the Checks page for copyright issues before publishing. Resolve any issue you can; a clean check does not guarantee that a later claim cannot arise.
  5. Choose a visibility setting that matches who should be able to watch.

Setting Who can watch Best fit
Private You and people you specifically select. Comments are unavailable. A recording that should be limited to selected viewers.
Unlisted Anyone with the link; viewers can reshare it. It does not ordinarily appear in search or your channel’s Videos tab. A link-shared video that does not need to be limited to named viewers.
Public Everyone; the video can appear in search, related videos, and recommendations. A class intended for an open audience.

Unlisted is not confidential: anyone who receives the link can watch and pass it on. If a recording contains sensitive participant content, use private access or an institution-approved learning platform rather than an open link. See YouTube’s video privacy settings.
