Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

OBS saves the scene as one composed video—not as a separate video track for every source. If you need separately editable audio, assign audio sources to different recording tracks in Advanced Audio Properties and enable those tracks in Output settings.
What “multiple sources” means in OBS
OBS scenes are layouts made from sources such as a display, game, webcam, capture device, image, media file, or audio input. The recording shows the scene’s visual composition: sources overlap according to their layer order. Separate audio tracks are a different feature; they let you edit audio sources independently after recording.
The OBS Project’s Sources Guide (January 11, 2022) documents adding and arranging sources. Its Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide (July 14, 2023) covers separate audio tracks; it does not establish that each visual source is recorded as an independent video track.
Choose a source for each input
| What you want to capture | OBS source type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| The whole monitor | Display Capture | Captures the display, rather than only one application. |
| One application window | Window Capture | Use this when you want a particular window rather than the entire display. |
| A game | Game Capture | OBS documents Game Capture for Windows. |
| A webcam or external video input | Video Capture Device | A camera or capture card may be used when appropriate; a capture card is not required for every setup. |
| An existing video or audio file | Media Source | Adds media to the scene. |
| A microphone or other audio device | Audio Input Capture or another appropriate audio source | Check the mixer meters and avoid capturing the same device twice unintentionally. |
| Text or a still graphic | Text or Image | Useful for labels, titles, or overlays. |
Source names and availability depend on your operating system and setup. For display, window, or app capture on macOS 13 and later, OBS directs users to macOS Screen Capture. See the OBS Project’s source documentation for platform-specific details.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add and arrange multiple sources
- Create or select a scene. In the Scenes dock, choose an existing scene or add one for the recording layout you want.
- Add the first input. In the Sources dock, click +, select the source type that matches the input, and configure the device, display, window, or file as prompted.
- Add the remaining inputs. Repeat the same process for every camera, screen, game, media, or other source you want in the composition.
- Arrange the preview. Select a visual source and drag it into position; resize it in the preview to create the layout you want. For precise fitting, use the source’s transform options if available in your OBS version.
- Set the layer order. In the Sources list, a source higher in the list appears above sources beneath it and can cover them. Drag sources to reorder them, then use the eye control to show or hide a source.
- Check audio. Watch the Audio Mixer while speaking or playing sound. Confirm that intended inputs register and that you have not unintentionally added the same device both as a global audio device and as a scene source; OBS warns that this can cause echo.
- Record a test clip. Start recording, make a short sample, stop, and play it back. Confirm that the framing, visible layers, and audio are correct before recording something important.
The OBS Project’s OBS Studio Overview Guide (August 25, 2021) describes scenes as the composition of sources and recommends testing your setup. Your exact options and system performance depend on your hardware and configuration.
Record separate audio tracks for editing
Use multiple audio tracks when you want to adjust a microphone, game sound, or other audio independently in a compatible editor. The OBS guide explains: “Setting your audio sources to record to multiple tracks is useful when working with an editor after you are finished recording in OBS Studio.”

- Open Advanced Audio Properties. In the Audio Mixer, click the gear icon and choose Advanced Audio Properties. The guide also identifies the Edit menu as a way to open it.
- Assign sources to tracks. In the Advanced Audio Properties table, select the track or tracks each audio source should use. For example, put microphone audio on one track and desktop or game audio on another if you want to edit them separately.
- Enable those tracks for recording. Open Settings → Output and, in the recording settings, enable the track numbers you assigned. Track assignment alone is not enough if those tracks are not enabled for recording.
- Test the file in your editor. Make a short recording and verify that the intended tracks are present and contain the expected sources.
Standard video players generally play only one audio track at a time. If you need the recording to play with all intended audio in a typical player without post-production, route all needed audio sources to track 1 as well. The cited OBS guide’s compatibility warning is about playback behavior; your editor may handle multiple tracks differently.
Common problems and fixes
- A camera or screen is hidden: Check the eye icon in the Sources dock and move the source above any layer covering it.
- A source does not appear in the list: Confirm you selected the right source type for the input and that the option is available for your operating system. For supported macOS versions, use macOS Screen Capture for display, window, or app capture as directed by OBS.
- The audio echoes: Check whether the same device is selected both globally and as a scene source. Remove the duplicate capture or adjust the configuration, then test again. OBS’s Audio Sources page (January 11, 2022) describes this echo risk.
- The recording is missing an audio stem: Revisit Advanced Audio Properties to check the source-to-track assignments, then check Settings → Output to confirm the track is enabled for recording.
- A normal player does not mix all audio tracks: Put all audio you want heard during ordinary playback on track 1, or use an editor/player that supports selecting or mixing tracks.
- The layout or capture behaves differently than expected: Record and inspect a short test under the same scene and settings you plan to use. A test catches composition and audio-routing issues before a longer session.
