Loom is designed for quick recording and link sharing; Google Vids’ Chrome extension documents recordings up to 30 minutes; OBS Studio offers more configurable capture controls. The right choice depends mainly on where you want the finished video to live and how much control you need.
Should you record a Chrome tab, a browser window, or your whole screen?
Choose the smallest area that shows the complete workflow. A smaller capture keeps unrelated tabs, notifications, and private information out of the video.

Chrome’s screen-capture permission flow asks you to select what to share. Its getDisplayMedia() API supports a user-selected tab, window, or screen, with optional audio; extensions can also use tabCapture. These APIs do not silently choose a target for the user.

How to record a website walkthrough with audio
Before recording, rehearse the clicks, close unrelated tabs, silence notifications, and remove passwords or private data from view. For narration, select the intended microphone and check its input level. For a silent demonstration, turn the microphone off. Camera video is optional.
Record with the Loom Chrome extension
- Open the Loom Chrome extension and choose Full Screen, Window, or Current Tab.
- Choose whether to include the camera. Loom’s instructions describe toggling the camera on or off.
- Select a microphone source for narration, or turn the microphone off.
- Start recording and perform the walkthrough.
- Stop the recording from the recorder controls. Edit the resulting video if needed, then share its generated link.
Loom’s documented workflow is suited to quick capture followed by editing and link sharing. It uploads the result for that sharing workflow rather than serving as a purely local recording setup.

Record with Google Vids’ Chrome extension
- Open the Google Vids Chrome extension and choose Screen.
- Select Chrome Tab, Window, or Entire Screen.
- Enable tab or desktop audio if needed, then click Share.
- Record the walkthrough. Use pause and resume if you need a break.
- Click Finish to end the recording and use the available link-sharing workflow.
Google Docs Editors Help states that Chrome-extension recordings can be up to 30 minutes long. Treat that as the documented limit for this extension workflow, not as a claim about every Google Vids recording method.
Record with OBS Studio
- Install and open OBS Studio, then run its Auto-Configuration Wizard to get recording settings suited to your system and intended use.
- In the Sources panel, add Display Capture to record a display or Window Capture to record an application window. OBS documents macOS Screen Capture for macOS.
- Check the audio mixer and confirm the desired microphone or other audio source is present and moving when you speak.
- Review the preview for private information and confirm the capture area before starting.
- Click Start Recording. When done, click Stop Recording; OBS saves a local recording using its configured output settings.
OBS provides more control over a recording setup than a simple browser extension, but you need to configure and manage the recording yourself. Its official quick-start guide recommends the Auto-Configuration Wizard and documents display and window capture sources.

How to capture a screen in your own browser-based tool
If you are building a recorder rather than simply making a video, Chrome’s getDisplayMedia() asks the user to choose a display surface and returns a media stream that your application can record. The permission picker is an essential part of the flow: the page cannot silently start sharing a screen.

Troubleshoot common recording problems
- The recording shows the wrong content: Stop and restart, choosing the intended tab, window, or display in the browser’s share picker. For a one-site demo, select that tab rather than the entire screen.
- The microphone is missing or silent: Check the selected microphone source and the operating system’s input permission, then test it before recording. Confirm the recorder has not been set to microphone off.
- There is no tab or desktop audio: Enable the relevant audio option in the recorder’s sharing flow. Audio choices depend on the selected surface and browser; do not assume microphone narration and computer audio are the same input.
- Chrome does not let a page start sharing by itself: This is expected. Screen capture requires the user to select what to share in the permission picker.
- A Google Vids extension recording cannot continue: The documented extension maximum is 30 minutes. Stop within that limit or divide a longer walkthrough into separate recordings.
- The screen is black or the capture does not appear in OBS: Recheck the selected Display Capture or Window Capture source, confirm it points at the intended display or window, and inspect OBS’s preview before recording.
- Private information appears in the video: Stop, remove or obscure the exposed material, and record a replacement. Close private tabs and disable notifications before another take.
