One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo record a webpage as video, capture the browser tab, window, or screen while the page is open. For a simple recording, use a screen recorder and choose the browser surface in its sharing prompt. If you are building a web app, the Screen Capture API’s getDisplayMedia() method asks the user to select a surface and returns a stream that can be recorded. For a video with a webpage composed inside a production scene, OBS Studio’s Browser Source loads a page by URL or local file.
Choose the recording method that fits
All three approaches record the page as it is rendered on screen; they are not a way to download the website’s original video file. Pick based on whether you want a quick capture, a recording feature in your own web app, or a composed scene for editing.
| Method | Best fit | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop screen recorder | A quick recording without writing code | A browser tab, window, or display selected in the recorder’s sharing prompt |
| Browser Screen Capture API | A developer adding recording to a web application | A user-selected tab, window, or display stream; the user must approve the capture |
| OBS Browser Source | A composed recording or stream scene | A webpage loaded into an OBS scene, rather than the browser as it appears on the desktop |
The cited documentation does not establish a universal best recorder, a shared output format across tools, or identical browser support for every workflow. Choose a tool whose export options and controls suit your editing needs.
Record a webpage with a desktop screen recorder
- Open the webpage and set the browser to the state you want viewers to see. Close unrelated tabs or windows, and dismiss anything on screen that should not appear.
- Open your screen-recording tool and choose its option for capturing a browser tab, window, or display.
- When the browser or system sharing prompt appears, select the surface containing the page and confirm sharing.
- Start recording, perform the page actions you want to demonstrate, and stop the recording in the recorder.
- Review the saved video. Check that the page is legible, the intended interactions were captured, and any narration or other audio is present if you wanted it.
The exact labels and export controls depend on the recorder and operating system; the cited sources do not provide current click-by-click steps for every platform. The essential distinction is the selected surface: a tab is more focused, a window captures the browser window, and a display can include other things visible on that screen.

Plan for narration and editing
A microphone is optional. Add narration only if it helps explain the page or actions. If you intend to edit the result, decide whether to record a clean walkthrough or include the cursor, browser interface, and other desktop context. Preview the output before sharing it.
Record a webpage in a web app with JavaScript
The browser Screen Capture API exposes getDisplayMedia(), which prompts the user to select what to share. The returned stream can be passed to MediaRecorder. The following minimal example records the selected surface and offers the resulting recording as a download when stopped. Serve it in a secure context, such as HTTPS or localhost, and trigger capture from a user action such as a button click.
Chrome’s screen capture guide documents the selection prompt and a navigation caveat for one extension capture flow. web.dev’s screen-recording guide demonstrates recording and saving a WebM video.

This example requests video capture and does not request audio. The downloaded file is named with a WebM extension, following the web.dev example; do not assume every browser or recorder produces the same format. For a production app, handle permission cancellation visibly, test the actual output on the browsers you support, and make sure users can end sharing using the browser’s controls as well as your stop button.

Capturing only one element
Chrome’s Element Capture guide describes a developer-oriented API that can restrict a Screen Capture stream to a selected HTML element and its direct descendants. This is distinct from recording a tab and is not a general-purpose rectangle-selection feature for everyday screen recorders. Use it only when your application has a specific element-level capture need and you have confirmed availability for your target environment.
Navigation during capture
Chrome’s extension guide states that when capture is called within a content script, recording automatically ends when the user navigates to a new page; it describes an offscreen-document approach for extension developers who need capture to continue across navigation. That documented behavior concerns that extension flow, not every desktop recorder or every web app. If a workflow must survive navigation, test its exact capture architecture rather than assuming the browser will keep recording.

Use OBS when the webpage belongs inside a scene
OBS Studio’s Browser Source loads a webpage inside an OBS scene, using a URL or local file. This suits a presentation, stream, or edited recording where the page is one visual element alongside other scene content. It differs from sharing the browser window: OBS renders the source as part of the scene, so it does not simply reproduce everything visible around the page on your desktop.
- In OBS, create or select a scene.
- Add a Browser Source to that scene.
- Set the source URL or local file and configure its viewport dimensions.
- Arrange the source with the other scene elements, then record the scene using your OBS workflow.
For the source’s available settings and details, see the OBS Browser Source documentation. The cited documentation establishes the URL/local-file and viewport workflow, but not a universal quality comparison against desktop capture.

What can go wrong and how to recover
- No sharing prompt appears: In managed Chrome installations, administrators can control whether sites may prompt people to share tab, window, or screen video. Check with the administrator or consult Chrome Enterprise policy documentation if the prompt is missing or blocked.
- The user cancels the prompt: A selection prompt is part of the permission-mediated flow. Let the user retry and choose the intended surface; do not treat cancellation as a successful capture.
- The recording ends after navigation: If this is an extension using capture from a content script, Chrome documents that navigation ends the recording. For an extension that needs continuity, follow the offscreen-document approach described in the Chrome capture guide. Do not apply this specific caveat to unrelated recorders without testing.
- The downloaded file does not play in the expected player: Confirm the recorder’s actual output and the player’s supported formats. The cited web.dev example saves WebM, but the sources do not establish one format for all tools.
- The page looks different in OBS than in the browser: A Browser Source is an embedded webpage in a scene, not a capture of the browser window. If you need to show the desktop browser exactly as displayed, capture the browser tab/window/display instead.
- Only part of the page needs to be captured: For an end-user recording, choose an appropriate tab or window surface. Element Capture is a developer API for a selected element and its descendants, not a general arbitrary-area tool.
Before recording, check that you have permission to capture the page and any audio or material it contains. The cited technical sources do not establish legal permissions for particular websites or content.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a video recorder. It is useful when the deliverable is a still image of a webpage rather than a moving walkthrough: one GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cleanup can accept cookie/consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before a shot; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes screenshot and PDF tools to AI agents.
cURL example (save a WebP screenshot, not a video):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python equivalent:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js equivalent:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It includes 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. ScreenshotNeo is for obtaining page screenshots, not recording a webpage as video. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

No dedicated physical product is required by the software and API workflows described here. A microphone is optional if you want narration.
Can I make a still screenshot with the video capture API?
The methods here are for recording a video stream. For a still image, use a screenshot workflow rather than treating the recording as a screenshot.
